Back in my undergraduate schooling days, I accidentally set a small mineral oil bath on fire for an addition reaction. My temperature application was 250C and the only oil we had at the time was mineral oil, who's flash point is 168C.
After the fire, we switched to silicone oil, who's flash point is 316C, where the flash point is greater than my reaction temperature.This oil bath worked out for me, however please note, silicone oil is more expensive than mineral oil ($709 USD per 2.5L bottle.
Anything higher than 300C will require Nickel-Chrome heating wire, sand or glass bead baths. It is difficult to regulate the temperature on solid bath, as solids do not heat uniformly (the bottom of the sand is hotter than the top of the sand). Liquids are easier to heat uniformly when stirred.
Please also note, once an oil bath has been contaminated with a flammable solvent, the flash point of the contaminated oil is unknown.

Dear members,
I was wondering if I can tap on the group expertise and wisdom on the use of Oil baths. We have had a few small fires due to overheating or faulty thermostat. In your opinion, how often oil baths must be changed? What type of oil (not too expensive) is recommended? What do you suggest replacing them with ? I have heard: beads, sand etc.. Please share any experience you may have with oil baths substitutions. Do they work to heat up solvents evenly?
