CHEMICAL SPILL CLEANED UP AT INKSTER INDUSTRIAL PARK

Hazardous materials crews in Winnipeg have finished cleaning up a chemical spill in the Inkster Industrial Park this afternoon.
Emergency personnel were called to Smooth Freight on Milner Street shortly after 2 p.m. CT Tuesday, after a forklift punctured a container full of a cleaning chemical.
A City of Winnipeg spokesperson told CBC News that about 662 litres (175 gallons) of sodium bisulfate leaked onto the ground, but it was soaked up with sawdust.
No one was injured in the incident, and none of the chemical reached any nearby sewers.

SOUTH WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS 'DECONTAMINATED' AFTER BED BUG SPRAY PROMPTS HAZMAT RESPONSE, POLICE SAY

Two people received medical treatment Sunday after using "a significantly high amount of residential pest control product" in their South Whitehall Township home, police said.
Authorities at the scene Sunday said the product was a bed bug spray.
Township officers and other emergency personnel at 3:44 p.m. were dispatched to a home in the 1400 block of North 21st Street for residents with difficulty breathing, police said. They determined that a pest control product used in a confined area of the home was responsible for the residents' symptoms, police said.
South Whitehall's emergency management team, Lehigh County Special Operations, Lehigh Valley Health Network Public Safety and Emergency Operations and the Lehigh Valley County Animal Response Team were called in to assist officers, Woodlawn Fire Department and Cetronia Ambulance Corps members already at the home, police said.
As a precaution, Lehigh County Special Operations, which handles the county's hazmat responses, "decontaminated" the residents, their pets and firefighters who entered the home, police said. The residents also received medical treatment from Cetronia Ambulance personnel at the scene, police said.

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY CHEMICAL INCIDENT PROMPTS EVACUATION, ROUTE 512 CLOSURE

At least a half dozen homes were evacuated this afternoon as a hazardous materials team worked to contain a chemical that reacted to the weather, Northampton County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Mateff said.
First responders were called at 2:10 p.m. to Custom Control Solutions in Upper Mount Bethel Township for a report of smoke coming from a drum.
Mateff said the drum contained sodium dithionite that reacted to moisture from recent snow and freezing rain. No one was hurt.
Mateff said the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is investigating how the chemical got there. Mateff couldn't immediately say how the chemical is used but didn't believe it was part of Custom Control Solutions' operations.

CAR CATCHES FIRE IN BRIDGEWATER AS DRIVER ATTEMPTS TO JUMPSTART VEHICLE

BRIDGEWATER Ñ An Audi caught fire in a homeowner's driveway Tuesday afternoon, shortly after the driver attempted to jumpstart the vehicle, according to fire officials who responded to the scene.
The car apparently hadn't been driven in a while.
At about noon on Tuesday, North Branch Volunteer Fire and Green Knoll Fire departments responded to Stillwell Court, in the North Branch section of Bridgewater, for a reported car fire that the homeowners believed was out.
But North Branch Fire Chief David Hickson said while the visible flames had subsided, the car was still smoking.
"The fire, which had settled into an area between the engine and the firewall, was still active, and visible smoke could be seen," he said Tuesday afternoon.
Fire officials first attempted to use a chemical fire extinguisher, because it removes the oxygen and "usually proves effective with this type of fire," Hickson said.
But he said the chemical extinguisher was not enough, and fire fighters, led by Lt. Ed Chabak, were able to quickly extinguish the fire with a water hand line.
"The deep-seated fire was difficult to extinguish," Hickson said.

PLANT WORKERS SUFFER SEVERE CHEMICAL BURNS IN BRANCHBURG

BRANCHBURG Ñ Chemical exposure sent three AZ Electronic Materials employees to the hospital Monday night for major burns Ñ and one worker may have even ingested the chemical, officials said.
At about 8 p.m. Monday night, emergency responders were called to 70 Meister Ave. in Branchburg, because one person had severe burns to the face, eyes and chest, according to North Branch Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Hickson.
"I was also notified that the victim had possibly ingested the chemical and was having respiratory distress," he said.
Two other employees suffered contact burns to their arms while transporting the worker to the decontamination room, Hickson said.
It was not immediately clear which chemical had been exposed, but Hickson said the chemicals were highly combustible, and about one gallon was released and cleaned up by in-house staff.
Somerset County Hazmat was called to the scene to investigate and secure the chemical spill area, Hickson said.

STONEHAM, Mass. ÑThe Massachusetts State Police bomb squad was called to a Stoneham parking lot Sunday afternoon after a car exploded.
The owner of the 2012 Honda Civic told News Center 5's Kelley Tuthill that she was about 30 yards away from the car outside of BJ's Wholesale Club on Cedar Street when she popped the trunk with her remote and the car exploded.
The car was destroyed but the woman, a nurse from Winchester Hospital, was not hurt.
The bomb squad determined the cause of the blast was an accidental vapor explosion. Investigators said the use of the car's remote unlocking device ignited vapors from plumber's equipment inside the vehicle.
The boyfriend of the car owner, who works for a HVAC company, had welding equipment inside the car. Investigators believe vapors ignited from acetylene tanks in the truck. It is believed there may have been a leak from that tank.

2 INJURED IN OIL FACILITY EXPLOSION NORTH OF VAN

VAN -- A man and a woman were injured Tuesday morning in Van Zandt County when an oil storage tank exploded while the pair were smoking on top of it.
The explosion occurred just before 3 a.m. at an oil storage facility on State Highway 110 north of Van.
The victims, who are both 24, have been moved to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. The female is on life support and the male has burns to the face, arms, and chest.
"It sounded like a big bomb went off, it was pretty loud," said James Oliver, who was woken up by the explosion.
There are five major storage tanks on the property, two of which exploded. Firefighters were using a foam blanket to prevent the other tanks from catching fire and exploding. Van Zandt County Fire Marshal said he thought the victims may have smoked a cigarette nearby.

SHEBOYGAN Ñ The Sheboygan Fire Department was on scene Tuesday afternoon of a hazardous leak at American Orthodontics on the city's north side.
Shortly after 1 PM, the Sheboygan Fire Department received a report of a 2,000 gallon tank was leaking at American Orthodontics, located at 1536 North 18th Street. The leak was repaired just before 3 PM.
According to officials, the tank contains ammonia.

PHOENIX -- A hazmat crew responded to a fire in South Phoenix Tuesday morning after cyanide was found inside a building.
The Phoenix Fire Department responded to a fire near Central Avenue and Baseline Road just before 3 a.m. after someone reported seeing smoke coming out of what appeared to be a home that had been turned into some sort of meeting hall.
When firefighters got there, they saw a sign on the door that the empty building was being treated with cyanide because of a rat problem.
That's when the hazmat crew was called.
"It's very dangerous for our guys to go in there without their masks and without air because it's a hazardous situation," said Larry Nunez with the Phoenix Fire Department.
Firefighters put out a small fire, which damaged the roof.

A toxic chemical leak at a Samsung Electronics Co. (SSNHY) chipmaking plant in South Korea left one worker dead and four injured, the company said Tuesday.
The five repair workers were called in Sunday night to stop the leak of diluted hydrofluoric acid at the plant in the city of Hwaseong, 43 kilometers southwest of Seoul, a Samsung spokesman said.
One was taken to hospital Monday with pains in his throat and chest but died hours later. The remaining four were also treated in hospital but released, the spokesman said.
The leak involved about two to three liters of acid and was contained early Monday morning, he said.
The acid is an acute poison that can damage lungs and bones and affect the nervous system, as well as burn the skin.
"The situation has been contained and Samsung will be investigating the circumstances of this unfortunate incident," the company said in a statement, offering its "deepest condolences' to the dead man's family.

HAZMAT RESPONSE AT A LYNNWOOD HEALTH CLUB

Lynnwood Fire and Snohomish County Fire District 1, along with the Snohomish County Hazardous Materials Team responded to a hazardous materials incident at a health club in the 19800 block of Scriber Lake Road in Lynnwood about 6 a.m. this morning.
A crack in a pump in the mixing room for the club's pool was identified and called in by an alert employee and he evacuated the building uninjured.
There were customers there as well who were uninjured and also evacuated.
Crews made entry into the mixing room for the club's pool where there was a chemical reaction.
The Hazmat team shut down the mixing system and washed down the room and verified the air quality to be at normal levels before they turned the club back to the owners.
The leak was confined to one room inside the building; however the pool area will stay closed until repairs have been made and reevaluated.

CVS-MADISON NABBED FOR VIOLATING STATE HAZMAT REGS

The CVS store in Madison is among seven in the state found to be violating the state's hazardous waste management regulations and recycling laws, the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) said Monday.
"Inspections of CVS stores in Connecticut found mismanagement of hazardous materials used in photographic processing solutions, non-dispensable pharmeceuticals, non-saleable consumer goods, and state-mandated recyclables," the DEEP said in a prepared release.
Stores in Guilford, Clinton, Coventry, Mansfield, Southbury and Vernon were also found to be in violation, the DEEP said.

UPDATED: HAZMAT UNIT EVACUATES SCIENCE BUILDING AT ARCADIA HIGH

UPDATE: A science experiment involving the accidental ignition of single chemical was what triggered the evacuation of the school's science building and the summoning of Hazmat teams, according to officials with the Arcadia Fire Department. No one was injured.
Students were partaking in an experiment that involved bringing cyclohexane, a chemical used primarily to make nylon and solvents, from a frozen to a liquid state. The chemical, which was in a beaker, overheated too quickly and caused a small fire, said fire department spokeswoman Beth Stogner, who added that the chemical quickly burned itself out and left no residue.
There were also no ill effects to any students or faculty following the fire, Stogner said. There were 30 students in the class. Hazmat units from Burbank and Glendale came to the school and were able to identify the chemical, Stogner said.

The fire on eastbound Interstate 10 started about 6:25 a.m. east of Cook Street.
The driver, who wasn't hurt, tried to put out the blaze with the truck's fire extinguisher, California Highway Patrol Officer Joe Zagorski said.
"The entire cab of the truck was engulfed in fire when fire department personnel arrived," he said.
The trailer was carrying 5,000 gallons of phosphoric acid, which is used in antiseptics, medicated powders, skin lotions and enamels.
The fire didn't reach the acid, which did not leak, according to Zagorski and the Riverside County Fire Department.

A London borough council has been sentenced for a serious safety breach after a 15 year-old girl was engulfed in a fireball from a cooking stove during a school camping expedition.
The teenager, then a pupil at East Ham's Plashet School, was caught in a flashover when another girl poured methylated spirits on to the cooking stove as she believed it was going out.
The erupting flames set fire to the girl's clothing and headscarf. She suffered severe burns to her hands, arms, face, neck and legs and was in Chelmsford Hospital's Special Burns Unit for three weeks. She has since had to have a skin graft and has permanent scarring.
The teenager, who has asked not to be named, was one of 25 girls on a three-day Duke of Edinburgh's Silver Award camping trip near the West Sussex village of Henfield. The incident, on 9 July 2011, was investigated by the Health and Safety Executive, which brought a prosecution against Newham Council for safety failings.
Southwark Crown Court was told today (25 Jan) that HSE found the incident could have been avoided if basic precautions had been taken. Fuel should have been kept in the correct containers, safely stored and simple procedures followed for lighting the stove.

DAYTON Ñ No injuries were reported after an industrial chemical fire broke out Sunday afternoon in the Tech Metal building east of downtown Dayton.
Dayton fire crews were called to 400 Springfield St. near the intersection of North Findlay Street about 11:30 a.m. There was a report of smoke coming from an industrial structure. Upon arrival, crews determined the fire was confined to a small area approximately 10 by 20 feet and was coming from a chemical rack.
The fire was knocked down by 12:37 p.m., and was completely out by 12:55 p.m., according to authorities. Multiple doors were used to clear the smoke. There is no estimate on the damages

EXPLOSIVE MATERIALS DETONATED AT STUDENT FARM

On the night of Jan. 17, eight explosions were heard by residents of the on-campus living community the Domes and surrounding complexes.
These explosions were the result of materials detonated at the site of the UC Davis Student Farm by police and other officials.
The materials were among those recovered from 418 Russell Park, home of chemistry researcher David Snyder, earlier that day. Snyder, in police custody under charges of possession of explosives and firearms, was injured in a chemical explosion occurring in the early hours of Jan. 17.
The Yolo County Bomb Squad, after searching and clearing his apartment, recovered multiple hazardous materials.
"Experts on the scene decided that some substances were not safe to transport a long distance, so bomb technicians found a safe space, off of Orchard Park, where they could destroy the substances safely," said UC Davis Chief of Police Matt Carmichael in a Jan. 19 press conference.

BARGE WITH 80,000 GALLONS OIL HITS BRIDGE, LEAKS

A barge carrying 80,000 gallons of oil hit a railroad bridge in Vicksburg, Miss., on Sunday, spilling light crude into the Mississippi River and closing the waterway for eight miles in each direction, the Coast Guard said. A second barge was damaged.
Investigators did not know how much had spilled, but an oily sheen was reported as far as three miles downriver of Vicksburg after the 1:12 a.m. incident, said Lt. Ryan Gomez of the Coast Guard's office in Memphis, Tenn.
Authorities were still trying to determine the source of the leak, but it appeared to be coming from one or two tanks located at the stern of the first barge, Gomez said. He said there was no indication that any oil was leaking from the second vessel, and said it was still unclear whether the second barge also hit the bridge or was damaged through a collision with the first.
