DCHAS Members,

I have come across a rather unique problem that is occurring on my campus. It seems as though no amount of education or reprimand can fix it. When faced with collecting a broken glass box, I find that our janitorial staff sorts through the box, stashing any bottles that are still complete. I continue to find them stashed in janitorial rooms around the building. I have no idea what they are using them for and do not even want to begin to speculate. All of the bottles are triple rinsed and defaced before going out for disposal, but I have no idea what the seconded staff are doing with them at this point.

I have spoken with their management and even began educating our researchers to discard the bottles and caps separately in order to mediate the situation. This has not worked. I do not want to resort to having our researchers crush them by hand into a box as this can lead to a slew or other injuries.

Can anyone recommend a glass compactor/crusher that can handle up to a 4L size bottle? What kind of maintenance will be required on such a unit?
