A chemical spill Tuesday afternoon forced students to evacuate Ward Beecher Hall on Youngstown State University's campus. Classes were canceled in that building for the rest of the evening.
A container holding about a gallon of hydrochloric acid hit the ground and shattered on the fifth floor of Ward Beecher Hall, home to the chemistry and biological sciences departments.
Faculty and firefighters said following proper plans and protocol helped keep the spill and the situation under control.
The call came in around 3:30 p.m. for the chemical spill. Faculty alerted the first firefighters on the scene that they were dealing with hydrochloric acid.
"Apparently, a student was transporting it back to a storage area, and we don't know if he hit another cart or it fell off, we're not sure yet," said Battalion Chief Terrence Jordon, Youngstown Fire Department.
The student transporting the chemicals was taken to the hospital with a minor acid splash burn on his leg. No other students were injured, and crews evacuated the entire building to keep everyone away from the spill and the fumes.

AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - A former Texas college student from Saudi Arabia was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for trying to make a bomb for use in a religious attack, possibly targeting a former U.S. president.
Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari was sentenced in Amarillo, where jurors convicted him in June of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Prosecutors say he had collected bomb-making material in his apartment and researched possible targets, including the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush. A handwritten journal found in his apartment included notes that he believed it was time for "jihad," a Muslim term for holy war.

DEVELOPING: A small chemical leak from a tank at the company Boise Cascade in Jackson, Alabama, has forced the evacuation of nearby residents.
Authorities claim the chemical is chlorine dioxide CLO2, which started leaking from a tank at the paper mill around 8:55 Sunday morning.
A small RV park near the plant was evacuated as a precaution.
Crews have been unable to stop the leak, but say they have been able to keep it from getting worse.
The plant is on the Tombigbee River and the wind has been blowing steadily toward the river, and away from populated areas. Still, authorities are on standby to order more evacuations, should they be needed.

A New Holland manufacturing plant was evacuated Friday night when 55 gallons of a flammable liquid spilled onto a loading dock.
About 35 firefighters and haz-mat technicians responded to Case New Holland at 100 S. Hoover Ave. when a worker reported the spill about 9:40 p.m.
First-responders found that a 55-gallon drum of urethane, a hardening agent for paint, had leaked onto a trailer and the ground, officials reported.
A fork lift punctured the bottom of the drum as it was being lifted off the 53-foot trailer, according to officials.
The plant was evacuated and crews spent about three hours cleaning the spill before a private contractor took over the job, Stefan Kuenzli, a lieutenant with New Holland Fire Company said.

ATLANTA (AP) Authorities say some students are recovering from their injuries after an experiment to make a model volcano erupt led to an explosion in an Atlanta classroom.
Atlanta Prep Academy Principal Dr. Lynette Walker tells WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/UlSFV5) that students had been working on their volcano experiments when one student gave the dry ice for his volcano to a classmate when the substitute teacher wasn't looking. Walker said one of the students took the dry ice and put it in a water bottle with vinegar and it exploded during the experiment last week.
Officials said part of the bottle struck one student's forehead. A second student suffered a burn to his hand. Authorities say the chemicals got into another student's face.
Walker said she's reviewing safety policies in light of the incident.

WACO (November 13, 2012)--Employees were able to extinguish a small fire at a fuel storage facility quickly early Tuesday morning before fighters arrived.
An assistant Waco fire chief said two units were sent just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday to the fuel tank farm on Kendall Lane near Orchard Lane after a fire was reported at the facility.
The assistant chief said he was unsure whether employees used a cut-off valve or extinguishers to douse the flames, but he said by the time the Waco fire units arrived the fire was out.
The facility stores gasoline in large tanks.

VOORHEES, N.J. (CBS) - Several students and a teacher were burned during a science experiment at a high school in Camden County, New Jersey.
Authorities say six students and one teacher were injured and required medical treatment when a classroom physics experiment sparked a fire at Eastern Regional High School on Laurel Oak Road.
The students had just gone through one of their routine fire drills at the school. Then 30 minutes later, they say they heard a second fire alarm. They thought they were practicing the same thing twice until they saw not only fire trucks, but also police and paramedics rushing into the parking lot.
"We were not allowed in for like an hour afterwards. They just started letting kids walk back in," said Alex Neumann, a student.
"A fireballÉI can't say exactly how it happened because I didn't attend the interview with the teacher," said Louis Bordi, Voorhees Police Chief.
Students say the physics class was experimenting with rockets when one of them exploded.
"The flames hit the desk. It set papers on fire, and some kids got hurt, but it was just an accident," said student Bill Nogenitz.
At least one student, a junior, suffered serious burns and was transported to Cooper University Hospital. The other victims were taken to Virtua Voorhees with less serious burns.
The incident is under investigation.

GUTHRIE, Oklahoma - Hazmat crews rushed to clean up a chemical spill early Monday morning at Mercy Hospital in Guthrie.
There was a spill in the hospital's lab before 4 a.m. Ambulances were briefly diverted, but the hospital says no one was evacuated and no patients were affected.
The spill was quickly cleaned up. The hospital did not say what kind of chemical it was, or what caused the spill.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Ñ Authorities on Monday ordered a second, smaller round of evacuations that could last several days near a train derailment to allow crews to remove hazardous chemicals from some of the tanker cars on the outskirts of Louisville.
Officials said the latest evacuation will affect only a fraction of the residents included in one almost two weeks ago that cleared out the town of West Point and sent hundreds from their homes after a chemical fire erupted at the site.
Jody Duncan, a spokeswoman for the Louisville-Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency, said 31 homes within a half-mile radius of the derailment will be cleared out this time around.
The evacuation will coincide with work starting early Tuesday to remove hydrogen fluoride and butadiene from rail tanker cars.

BANGALORE: A minor fire broke out at the manufacturing unit of Himalaya Drug Company on Tumkur Road near Nelamangala on Sunday morning.
Police said the fire was noticed at 10.30am when two employees who had just checked into the company's R&D unit saw smoke emanating from a container. The staff who were present at the factory alerted the fire brigade who arrived immediately.Four fire tenders doused the flames in almost one hour. There were no casualities, police said, probably because it was a Sunday.
Fire and emergency services officials suspect the fire outbreak was caused due to a chemical reaction of the contents of the container. "A few electrical wires in the unit have been burnt," they said.

LUCKNOW: Most of the shops selling fire crackers in the city are flouting the norms laid down by the Supreme Court, which makes it mandatory to print the noise level, chemical composition and a word of advice on the boxes. However, authorities are yet to act in this direction.
According to the order passed by the Supreme Court on July 18, 2005, the Department of Explosives (DoE) should specify the composition and maximum permissible weight of every chemical used in manufacturing firecrackers. The details are required to be published on packets and boxes having crackers. The permissible limit of noise for a single cracker is 125 decibel and for a series of cracker is 105 decibel.

ILLIOPOLIS Ñ Authorities say a new security firm hired by Formosa Plastics has reduced the number of scrap-metal thieves who have been plundering the shuttered chemical plant.
The facility in Illiopolis, which formerly manufactured polyvinyl chloride used in plastics, has been a hotbed for thieves since a massive explosion killed five workers and injured several others on April 23, 2004.
The plant can be a bonanza for a metal thief Ñ a well-equipped burglar might be able to steal 5,000 pounds of copper wire, worth as much as $15,000 from a scrap-metal dealer, in a single night, police reports say.
