Los Angeles firefighters and hazmat experts were investigating an unknown odor inside a Lincoln Heights warehouse that sickened at least seven people Sunday morning, officials said.
Crews were first called to the warehouse in the 3800 block of North Mission Road shortly before 10 a.m., said Los Angeles Fire spokesman Brian Humphrey. There, Humphrey said, a custodian said he thought the odor originated from a plastic bag in a trash can that he had moved to an outside dumpster before firefighters arrived.
Humphrey said firefighters had yet to determine the source of the odor.
By 11:30 a.m., seven people complained of nausea and vomiting, Humphrey said, and were expected to be evaluated further at an area hospital.
No evacuations have been ordered, as the incident seemed to be limited to a "very small area" of the warehouse, which building personnel told Humphrey was an estimated 2-million square feet in size.

NEAR LESTER, Iowa (KTIV) -
Around 4:15 a.m. Sunday, a freight train headed from Sioux City to Wilmer, Minn., derailed in Lester, Iowa, taking 25 of its 100 cars off the track. Nobody was hurt, but the work began in earnest for local law enforcement officials.
"We have the HAZMAT team down there. They're checking for any leaks or contaminations," said Mark Dorhout, deputy for the Lyon County Sheriff's Department.
Emergency personnel kept peopleÑincluding the mediaÑat bay Sunday, as they assessed a potentially dangerous situation on and around these tracks.
"The car that's been compromised is LPG, and so that's why we're working so closely with first responders," said Amy McBeth, spokesperson for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railways.
LPG stands for liquefied petroleum gas, which is incredibly flammable. HAZMAT officials say an initial assessment showed no hazardous leaks, but there was still a danger of a fire, when putting the cars back on the tracks. Some of the other cars were carrying things like cement and propane.

Evacuations have been lifted and homeowners are being allowed back into the town of West Point four days after a chemical fire started at the site of a train derailment. The Louisville mayor's office said in a release Sunday that two rail tank cars containing hydrogen fluoride were moved and stabilized and all restrictions have been lifted, including a 1.2-mile evacuation zone and a shelter-in-place restriction for anyone within five miles of the site.
However, the Dixie Highway remained closed.
The fire burned out on its own Sunday morning as crews moved the two cars, which posed the greatest risk.
Hundreds of residents were given little notice to evacuate on Wednesday after a worker's torch ignited fumes at the site of the train that derailed on Monday.

CHICO AG ACCIDENT INJURES WORKER

A North State man is fighting for his life after he was badly burned in a propane accident in Chico.
Cal-OSHA is now investigating the incident. It all happened around 11:00 this morning at the Shasta Vista Almond Huller on Anita Road.
Cal Fire officials say there was flash fire between a propane delivery truck and a propane storage tank on the property.

Windsor fire crews responded Thursday afternoon to a fire at Morey's Glass and Metals on Main Street.
There were no injuries or property damage, according to Windsor Severance Fire Rescue Spokesman Todd Vess. Magnesium, however, does react violently with water, so crews had to use alternate methods to put out the blaze.
Crews had hose lines set around the perimeter of the fire, which Vess said was about five feet by five feet, to cool the ground. Town of Windsor employees then came to dump dirt on the fire to smother it.
The fire started around 12:30 p.m. when a welder was working near the pile of magnesium scraps. A piece of metal bounced from the welder's work station and into the pile, igniting it and causing "spectacular, super white" flames, Vess said.
The $800 pile of scrap was destroyed.
Terry Walker, with the Town of Windsor, said town officials were happy to leap into action when the fire department called.

BREVARD TIMES: CLEANING CHEMICALS BLAMED FOR PALM BAY HOUSE FIRE

PALM BAY, Florida -- A probable reaction among cleaning chemicals stored in a garage is being blamed for sparking a fire that caused approximately $25,000 damage to a home on Zanzibar Street S.E. in Palm Bay, Florida, according to city spokesperson Yvonne Martinez.
Just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, residents located at 1344 Zanzibar Street S.E. awoke to the sound of smoke alarms in the home. They immediately began removing animals and personal items and evacuating the residence.
Propane fuel tanks in the garage began to explode as firefighters responded. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. Firefighters contained the fire to the garage area of the home.
Further investigation by the fire marshal determined the fire appeared to be accidental as a result of a probable chemical reaction with linseed and other cleaners stored on a shelf. The American Red Cross is assisting the family. No one was injured.

SANTA TERESA, N.M. Ñ New Mexico authorities say an unknown hazardous material release sickened about 200 people Tuesday near the Mexican border just northwest of El Paso, Texas.
A one-mile area surrounding the industrial park and border crossing at Santa Teresa was evacuated for a few hours Tuesday, and the nearby airport was closed. By Tuesday afternoon, only the industrial park remained off-limits as hazmat crews took samples to determine what made the people sick.

Amid all the damage left in Hurricane Sandy's wake is an automotive whodunit, or rather, what-dunit? What caused more than a million dollars-worth of plug-in hybrid vehicles, including 16 Fisker Karma luxury sedans, to catch fire Monday night at Port Newark?
Fisker, based in Anaheim, Calif., has had problems with vehicle fires in the past, including one incident this year that prompted the recall of more than 2,000 Karmas to replace a faulty cooling fan.
But the circumstances during the big storm were clearly unusual, raising the question of whether this latest incident is a sign of design flaws, of possible risks associated with plug-in vehicles generally or simply a result of the abuses wrought by extremely rare weather conditions Ñ or some combination of the three.

Baltimore County fire officials say several people were taken to the hospital after they were exposed to formaldehyde that spilled at a haunted house in Essex on Friday night.
The jar of the chemical was knocked over by one of the patrons at Kim's Crypt Haunted Attractions in the 400-block of Eastern Boulevard.
Officials say the injuries were not serious.
Firefighters were able to clean up the spill.
The chemical was used as a prop at the haunted house.

(AP) Ñ Hundreds of people will remain forced from their homes indefinitely as a massive effort continued Friday to move derailed train cars filled with hazardous materials away from a car holding chemicals that continued to burn for a third day, officials said.
"If we let them in prematurely, and God forbid had a catastrophic event É that would be serious. There could be loss of life," said Vincent Smith, chief of the Pleasure Ridge Park fire department in southwest Louisville. The fire is burning at the site of a derailment that occurred Monday but took a dangerous turn Wednesday when workers using a blow torch ignited the chemical butadiene from one of the derailed cars.
Officials said the butadiene fire was under control and they would not try to extinguish it until derailed cars around it are removed from the area, a delicate process that could take days.
