HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - More than 3,000 gallons of motor oil leaked from a storage tank into a drainage ditch in the Briarfield neighborhood Sunday.
Hampton hazmat crews contained the spill to area about a quarter mile, said Hampton Fire Department spokesman Capt . Anthony Chittum . However, residents faced the smell of oil for several hours while cleanup crews worked to remove the spill.
Hampton fire units first responded to the leak in the 2100 block of Mingee Drive at 12: 50 p.m. They notified the business owner who told them the tank had contained from 3,000 to 3,500 gallons of oil.

The two men killed in an abandoned Coromandel mine on Saturday died of carbon monoxide inhalation.
They were Kerry Alexander Murphy, 40 and Grant Christopher Wyllie, 49, both from Whitianga.
Significant amounts of chemical were found which is consistent with a drug lab, police told media at a press conference in Whitianga today.
There was no explosion in or around the mine, said acting Detective Sergeant Ross Patterson.
The mens' deaths were treated as sudden deaths as opposed to homicide and police were not looking for anyone else.
He said there were inherent risks to life in operating petrol powered generators in confined spaces.
He warned people to be diligent in operating generators under ground.

For 18 months police argued Clint Curley was a drug manufacturer, cooking up methamphetamine in his mate's shed.
Curley's family knew the truth - their son wasn't a P cook but an inventor who died, aged 25, when a pneumatic long-line launcher he was building exploded in March, 2011.

Key evidence came from a doctor who said the chemicals found at the scene were consistent with the device that Curley's boss, Rex Page, said he was constructing.
Page told the jury they had spoken about him building a compression chamber out of schedule 10 steel pipe as part of a long-line launcher.
Page advised him to use schedule 80, which was stronger. Curley went with schedule 10 and the pressure vessel that blew up.

A Hazmat situation in Federal Way sent more than a dozen people to the hospital with breathing problems Saturday night.
Around 5:30 pm, residents at the Azalea Gardens apartment complex began experiencing breathing problems. Ten residents had minor injuries while two experienced more serious problems. Two firefighters were also treated.
South King Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Kevin Body said there was an unknown substance on the ground.
"They've created an isolation area to prevent further exposure," said Body.
Nearby residents were evacuated and kept away from their homes for hours as crews investigated.
"The rumor is there it could be some sort of fertilizer mixed incorrectly," said Nick Williams, who lives across the street from the complex.
"There's kids everywhere; knowing there could be chemicals in the grassy area, that's a big issue," he said.

The Health and Safety Authority is to visit the C&D Foods plant in Edgeworthstown, Co Longford on Monday, after an ammonia leak that led to the evacuation of the plant today.

Two units of Longford fire services were called to the pet food manufacturing plant after locals reported a strong smell of ammonia in the town and in a children's playing area near the plant.
The fire services worked for four hours to help contain a leak of ammonia at the plant. Production has now recommenced and the alert is over.

A fire has broken out at a chemical laboratory in a building at Queen's University, Belfast.
The blaze in the David Keir building began shortly after 12pm on Sunday.
Four fire engines and a crew equipped to deal with hazardous materials responded to the call out.
A Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said, "Minor damage was caused to the lab which will be open as usual on Monday.
"Queen's has launched an investigation in conjunction with the Fire and Rescue Service to determine how the fire started."

A 43-year-old man, injured in an explosion at an Albany Street home in St. John's, has died. His name will not be released. The fire department was called to take the man to hospital, and that's when they found a quantity of hazardous materials and called police.
The subsequent investigation determined the home was the site of a clandestine drug lab. Area residents were evacuated while drug lab teams from the RNC, RCMP in cooperation with firefighters, searched the house and began removing the materials. The chemicals were sent to Montreal for analysis. The investigation remains open pending the receipt of the analysis.

ANTELOPE, CA - A shelter in place order was given in the Antelope area of Walerga Road and Singing Tree Way due to a flammable gas leak around 10:15 a.m. on Friday.
Michelle Eidman of the Sac Metro Fire Department said the two-inch gas line was ruptured during roadwork.
10 homes closest to the leak were evacuated.
Sac Metro Hazmat crews and four fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and were working with Pacific Gas and Electric to shut off the leak, said Eidman.

BASALT Ñ Basalt High School was evacuated shortly before noon Friday when someone discharged some type of "chemical" in a boys' bathroom, school and emergency response officials said outside the facility.
Based on the reaction of Basalt Police Department officers and firefighters, the incident appeared to be a prank rather than an attack. At least one officer put on a mask and entered the school with a rifle drawn, after the students and faculty were evacuated. The officer exited about 30 minutes later and conferred with other emergency responders and school officials outside the facility.
Emergency medical technicians checked the condition of approximately 24 students, teachers and administrators who came in contact with the chemical agent. The victims reported the chemical caused them to cough and their eyes to tear up. Some also developed headaches.

A section of U.S. 76/378 near Shaw Air Force Base was closed for several hours Friday morning as crews worked to clean up a chemical spill.
Sumter County firefighters, along with Shaw's hazardous materials team, responded at 5:49 a.m. to reports of a shipping container that had flipped onto its side near the intersection with S.C. 441. First responders found the container was leaking a "chlorine-based, toxic chemical," later identified as a flame retardant used in textiles, according to Fire Capt. Brian Horton.

MONTREAL - These days, the eyes of the academic chemistry community are riveted on a courtroom in Los Angeles, where University of California, Los Angeles chemistry Professor Patrick Harran stands accused of "wilfully violating occupational safety and health standards and causing the death of a young technician in his laboratory."
Many professors are following the trial with trepidation, mindful of the possibility that they could be the ones facing the music in that courtroom. So far, there is only one certainty about this evolving drama: it is tragic for everyone involved. A young woman whose future held great promise is gone; her parents' lives are now dominated by visits to the cemetery. And a distinguished professor's life is shredded as he faces a possible prison sentence.
Dr. Harran is a researcher and teacher with a stellar record of awards and publications. One of his interests is appetite-suppressant drugs, and it was in this context that 23-year-old Sheri Sangji was performing an experiment in his laboratory on Dec. 29, 2008. Sangji was equipped with an undergraduate degree in chemistry and had been working for a pharmaceutical company when she was hired by Harran as a research assistant. The particular reaction she was working on required the use of t-butyl lithium, a notoriously pyrophoric compound, meaning that it bursts into flames on contact with air. Obviously, it requires special handling.

A Chinese student in an Australian university was critically injured Friday after being attacked by a fellow Phd student with acid and a hammer, RTHK reports.
The incident took place at a chemistry research laboratory at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.
The victim, named Cheng Xiaoyu, suffered burns and head injury.
The 25-year-old was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney for emergency treatment and later moved to Royal North Shore Hospital's Burns Unit where he remains in critical condition.
Police said a row broke out between two students during which one of them allegedly threw a chemical, believed to be sulphuric acid, in another student's face before hitting him on the head with a hammer.
A fellow student, also a Chinese national, aged 26 has been charged in connection with the attack and has appeared in a Sydney court.
The magistrate ordered that the accused be transferred to a mental health facility for evaluation before appearing in court again on November the 29th.

IRVINE, Calif. -- Morning commuters in Irvine may have felt like they were facing an upstream battle when 1,600 pounds of live fish spilled on to a roadway, flopping around and bringing traffic to a standstill.
The Orange County Register reports ( http://bit.ly/RjcdNh) that the truck carrying the fish collided with two vehicles at about 9 a.m. Thursday, dumping the saltwater bass onto the intersection of Walnut and Yale avenues.
No injuries were reported.
The intersection reopened after hazmat authorities were able to clean up spilled diesel fuel and handle the oxygen tanks used to keep the fish alive during transport.

TCI CHEMICAL PLANT FIRE RULED ACCIDENTAL

COLUMBIA COUNTY, N.Y. -- This summer's massive TCI fire in Columbia County has been ruled accidental.
The recycling plant suffered a massive fire back on August 1st. People living within a 15 mile radius were advised to stay indoors for a time.
County lawmakers later approved a reverse 911 system to alert residents of future emergencies.
A DEC air quality test near the site turned up no trace of potential carcinogens.
State Police now say the official criminal investigation into a cause is closed and final. They say all plausible outside causes, including incendiary causes, have been ruled out.

A CHEMICAL on the clothes of a patient at Basingstoke hospital sparked an evacuation of part of the emergency department, after five staff became sick and dizzy and reported a smell of gas.
Ambulances with emergency patients were diverted away from Basingstoke between around 8pm last night and 1am this morning as firefighters investigated the bizarre incident.
Mary Edwards, chief executive of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said there had been no gas leak, explaining that the smell was emanating from the clothes of a patient who had earlier been treated in the department.
She said: "The fire service was called to the emergency department at Basingstoke hospital shortly because of a smell which was initially thought to be gas.
"The smell was actually from a chemical on the clothing of a patient who had been treated earlier.
"Staff acted quickly in raising the alarm."

The explosion took place yesterday afternoon in the plants mixing room. Sun Chemical has updated its statement below:
Seven employees at Sun Chemical's US Ink Plant, located in East Rutherford N.J., were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center following what appears to have been an explosion or flash fire in the pre-mix room of the plant at approximately 1:20 [EDT] this afternoon.
According to an emergency trauma physician at Hackensack University Medical Center, five workers are in fair condition at Hackensack and two others have been transported to the burn unit at St. Barnabas. Sun Chemical human resource personnel are providing any support needed by the families of the employees.
"We will cooperate 100 percent with East Rutherford Fire Department Fire Official Dennis Monks in order to conduct a full investigation. We must determine the actual root cause of this incident so that we can take any possible steps to prevent it from happening again. The safety of our people is too important," said Gary M. Andrzejewski, Sun Chemical Corporation Corporate Vice President for Environmental Affairs. "Speculating about what happened would do a disservice to the accuracy of any investigation."
