CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
Mecklenburg County and Charlotte fire fighters responded to the Emerald Performance Materials plant Tuesday to help contain an acid spill.
The West Mecklenburg Fire Department was the first on scene at about 9 p.m. Soon after, they called for the hazmat team from the Charlotte Fire Department.
Hazmat teams determined the spill was triflic acid. A pipe that was malfunctioning caused the leak.
One employee was treated on the scene for chemical burns. He was not taken to the hospital, firefighters said.
Triflic acid is extremely strong acid, often called a "super acid," according to manufacturers. It is used to make a variety of products.
Investigators told WBTV News an improper mixture of chemicals caused a chemical cloud, that plant operators feared was caustic, caused the incident.
Hazmat crews were able to control the spill and contain it to the plant.
The scene was cleared in about an hour, and hazmat crews said there was no environmental impact.

BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. -
A fire from a propane tanker truck on Rt. 611 in Bucks County kept firefighters working for several hours Monday.
Firefighters fought the tanker fire for much of the day before extinguishing it Monday afternoon in the area of Rt. 611 and Creamery Road.
The fire sparked around 8 a.m. after a car crashed into the tanker truck, which was carrying propane.
The truck overturned and caught fire. SkyFox was over the scene as crew battled large flames.
Officials were forced to evacuate homes and businesses within a half mile of the accident. The evacuations have since been lifted.

St. JOHNS, Ore. - A HazMat team cleaned up a spill just east of the St. Johns Bridge that caused a traffic backup during the evening commute
A pickup truck carrying barrels of hazardous materials lost its load along the roadway and some of the barrels began leaking, authorities said.
A HazMat crew was dispatched to the scene and Highway 30 was closed temporarily. Soon after, one lane was re-opened in each direction. All lanes were reopened around 7pm.
Authorities said as much as 500 gallons of material may have spilled.
"The material is very slow flowing and viscous, and does not pose an environmental hazard," said Tommy Schroeder of Portland Fire and Rescue.
The driver works for an asphalt company and the substance was a roofing tar, authorities said.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The eastbound lanes of Interstate 24 at James Robertson Parkway have re-opened Tuesday morning, nearly 12 hours after a tanker leaked thousands of gallons of sulfuric acid onto the road.
The roadway re-opened just before 5:30 a.m., but traffic remained slow. Exit 48 remained closed as crews continue their cleanup.
It began Monday evening when a truck driver picked up a load of sulfuric acid in Clarksville and made on his way south.
The man noticed the tanker leaking around 6:10 p.m. and pulled over on Interstate 24 near the James Robertson Parkway exit just east of LP Field.

A major fire is raging at a chemical trading firm in Sharjah's Industrial Area 2.
Located near the Igloo Ice Cream factory, Al Khowahir Chemical Trading Factory is on fire for almost twenty minutes, said an eye witness.
"The fire has been going on for about twenty five minutes. It is a major fire. People are taking videos and photographs," said the eye witness.
"This is a major chemical trading company in the Sharjah Industrial area, which has a dhow making unit too. It deals with chemicals for fiberglass, paint, water treatment, food and beverages, construction and oil field industry. The fire has gutted its central office in the Sharjah industrial area. The huge fire has gutted the company premises leaving thick smoke all around. The civil defence team is trying to keep the fire under control. For chemicals have caught fire, it is still not under control," said the eye witness.

KANPUR: A major fire broke out in a leather factory located in densely populated Beconganj area of the city on Monday evening. However, none was injured in the mishap.
The fire began from a room in the basement of a factory building. As the chemical used in pasting leather had caught fire, it soon spread in the other parts of the factory premises. The entire factory campus got filled with smoke, giving tough time to fire tenders to douse the flames. A number of factory workers got trapped inside, who were later rescued by the firemen and the locals. The incident took place at around 4 pm and the fire could be doused at 6 pm.

Cleanup and repair efforts have commenced in Temple Hall following a fire that occurred Wednesday, Sept. 19.
According to Bob Eckels, the director of facilities management, the fire caused damage to adjacent chemistry labs on the fourth floor and is to blame for water damage throughout the building.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but Eckels now says it had it to do with a chemical reaction in an experiment that was being done in lab 444 in the northeast corner of the building.
"There was intense heat at the point where the incident occurred, so there was thermoplastic that couldn't stand a lot of that intense heat," Eckels said. "The thermoplastic was melted and a great deal of smoke occurred because the plastic that was part of the combustion produced a lot of black smoke."
Because of this, Eckels said that lab 444 has a lot of blackened ceiling in and around the vents.
It was initially thought that the sprinklers had been activated, but Eckels said that the high intensity heat caused a solder joint to let go, causing a one-inch water line to spew water everywhere.
"The water spread through those two rooms (lab 444 and lab 440), some adjacent smaller rooms, another classroom to the west, and down a hallway," Eckels said. "It also made its way through floor penetrations into the third and second floors and into the dean's suite."
He said the third floor retained the most water, with rooms having 1-2 inches of water in them.

A CALTEX oil refinery in east Brisbane has been evacuated after a chemical leak left four workers injured.
Emergency services were called to the site near the Port of Brisbane about 7.15pm on Tuesday, after reports of a spilled chemical and a vapour cloud in the area
A Queensland Fire and Rescue Spokesman said paramedics were on the scene treating four workers who may have been injured in the leak.
"They are not believed to be seriously hurt at this moment but the four staff members were involved in an incident and are seeking medical attention," he said.
A Hazmat crew and a scientific officer joined two fire crews called to the scene.
It is believed the leak is now under control. It is not yet known what chemical was leaked.
The incident follows an explosion at the Boral Asphalt factory at Narangba, north of Brisbane, earlier on Tuesday.

COURT CONVICTS IN DEADLY 2001 FRENCH FACTORY BLAST

PARIS Ñ A court in southwestern France on Monday convicted a factory chief and a subsidiary of oil giant Total of manslaughter for an explosion at a chemical plant in 2001 that killed 31 people.
The appeals court overturned earlier acquittals, 11 years after the blast that tore apart the AZF plant in Toulouse with the force of a 3.4-magnitude earthquake. Some 2,000 people were injured.
The appeals court cited negligence by factory chief Serge Biechlin, saying it "created or contributed to the situation" that caused the accident, according to the Sipa news agency. It said Total subsidiary Grande Paroisse was his employer and, therefore, also responsible.
Grande Paroisse and Biechlin said they would appeal the new ruling to the nation's highest court. "They cannot serve as scapegoats when no proof was determined," the company said in a statement.
The blast occurred 10 days after the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States, raising fears of terrorism, but it proved to be an accident. However, it took years to determine the exact cause behind the explosion, which killed and injured Toulouse residents beyond the factory site, where 21 people died.
