CHEMICALS DUMPED AT BIRKENHEAD-GLENFIELD CEMETERY

Three 20 litre drums of unknown chemicals have been dumped at a North Shore cemetery and polilce are warning people to stay away.
Fire service spokesman Colin Underdown said they were called by police about 9.40am after a council staff member noticed the drums dumped down a bank at the Birkenhead-Glenfield Cemetery.
Underwood said they were unsure what chemical was inside the drums, two of which were full and sealed.
The third was empty and had been tipped out.
"We don't know what quantity of the chemical was tipped out, but they're 20 litre containers so that would be the maximum."
Underdown said the fire service had cordoned off the area and the council would arrange for the drums to be removed and the spill cleaned up.

POLICE SEEK 3 SUSPECTS AFTER CHEMICAL SPRAY AT WALMART

RIVERTON, Utah Ñ Unified Police are looking for three suspects they say released an aerosol chemical at a Riverton Walmart.
The incident happened at about 4:15 p.m. The store, located at 13502 S. Hamilton View Drive (3550 West), was evacuated and the store remains closed through Sunday morning.
Officials are determining if food items in the store, namely the produce, are safe to sell and consume.
Approximately 80 people were affected by the chemical. Most were treated at the scene, however, a woman and a child were taken to the hospital where they are in stable condition.
"Just took a deep breath and inhaled something and immediately started coughing," said Nina Lefau, an evacuated shopper.

HAVASU FIRE RESPOND TO BUCKSKIN SANITARY BLAZE

Lake Havasu City Fire Department's Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team assisted the Buckskin Fire Department during a fire at the Buckskin Sanitary District Thursday evening because several cylinders of chlorine appeared to be compromised by the fire.
One Lake Havasu firefighter was injured when he was overcome by the fumes and was transported by ambulance to Havasu Regional Medical Center where he stayed overnight for observation, according to a Lake Havasu City Fire Department press release.
Buckskin fire officials requested Lake Havasu's assistance at about 7:45 p.m. The Lake Havasu City Fire Department responded with an engine company, the Hazardous Materials Response Unit and a battalion chief.
The HazMat team members entered the building and determined the chlorine gas cylinders were still leaking, according to the release. The team secured the chlorine to eliminate any further danger to the community.

KARACHI: A 12-year-old boy, identified as Babar Khan, died and 12 others were injured, including an infant girl, when a plastic drum of chemicals exploded near Bara Board, said the Pak Colony police.
The police said that the shop belonged to a scrap dealer, Abdul Wahid, and the explosion occurred when chemical drums placed near the shop caught fire. They suspected that someone was mixing the chemicals when it exploded, engulfing a rickshaw and damaging several shops. SSP West Amir Farooqui said that it was not a grenade attack or a bomb blast. The explosion left a two-foot deep and 27 inch long crater.

FORT MYERS - Several Fort Myers fire units responding to a fire at 4245 Evans Avenue.
It happened just after 6:00 Friday morning. The fire is put out at this time, but there is major damage to the building.
We know right now that apparently an oven inside the Pall Corporation bulding exploded.
Five people did have minor injuries... while close to a hundred were evacuated from the building.
There are chemicals inside the building, but there is no concern for the general public.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Two people are sent to a Birmingham hospital after being exposed to sulfuric acid leaking from an overheated battery.
The Birmingham Fire Department's hazmat team evacuated the BJCC Medical Forum building. Sulfuric acid will burn the skin and harm the lungs.
"There were really only two people assigned to that area," Chief C.W. Mardis says. "So we don't anticipate anymore, but just as a precaution we are setting up a decon unit."

A fire official says hundreds of people in northern Indiana have been evacuated following a fire at a factory that left a chemical cloud in the air.
Mishawaka Battalion Chief Jim Cocquyt tells the South Bend Tribune (bit.ly/NtkFbv) that no injuries had been reported after the fire at the old Baycote facility. He says the Environmental Protection Agency took over the factory months ago and was cleaning up hazardous chemicals.
The newspaper reported several people were taken by bus to an elementary school that the Red Cross was using as a shelter.
City fire officials didn't immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment. A police dispatcher said she had no new information about the situation.

SCHOOL FIRE CAUSED BY CONSTRUCTION PROJECT, INVESTIGATORS FIND

Eight firefighters were hospitalized with burn injuries to their faces, hands and legs after two explosions erupted from the school's chemistry lab shortly after crews arrived at 5 a.m. on Sept. 5.
Investigators found the cause of the fire was accidental and the origin to be the installation site of a vent in a lab area, according to a release Friday. The fire had been smoldering in the crawl space above the lab's ceiling for hours.
The explosions were caused by an increase in oxygen to fuel the fire, a backdraft, after firefighters entered the school's chemistry lab.
Tulsa Public Schools leased the building, located at 2324 E. 17th St., to a charter high school it sponsors, the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences, less than three weeks before the fire.
The Tulsa Fire Department received assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and its National Response Team, which department officials called "tremendously helpful" in the probe.
