Reports of an odor brought the county Hazardous Materials Team to a townhome garage on Carlton Oaks Drive on Tuesday, but a Sheriff's Department presence pointed to a different concern.
A woman in the affected home in the 9450 block of Carlton Oaks Drive was being questioned over a possible probation violation, authorities said.
Sheriff's Sgt. Craig Johnson said a search of the home was conducted, but didn't specify what was sought or why the woman was on probation.
Meanwhile, an old gallon can of B-9 Chem-DipÑa toxic carburetor cleaner and the source of the spillÑrested on a brick outside the multifamily complex near the intersection of Halberns Boulevard and Willow Pond Road.

Fire Capt. John Sengebusch said the carburetor cleaner was illegal, but a La Mesa autoparts dealer said the product, made by Berryman, was being sold and was in stock.
According to the Berryman website, B-9 Chem-DIP contains methylene chloride and cresylic acid, and "disposal must conform to the rules of your community for proper disposal of hazardous waste."
The odor from the product is that of cresylic acid, the manufacturer said, noting this "is also one of the hardest odors to get rid of. Our best results have occurred by soaking the affected area with isopropyl alcohol."

ACCIDENT LEAVES ROAD CLOSED THREE HOURS

A tanker truck was carrying more than 3,000 gallons of fuel through Kuna on Tuesday when it collided with a car on E. Avalon. The accident required a hazmat response and left the road closed for about three hours.
According to Ada County Sheriff's Office deputy Gary Miller, the accident occurred at 1:49 p.m. when an elderly man turned right from Blue Diamond onto E. Avalon, putting his Buick sedan in the path of the eastbound tanker. Police said the man, who was uninjured in the crash, told them he did not see the truck as he made his turn.
Firefighters estimated about 10 gallons of diesel spilled onto the roadway before they arrived, but the fuel was from the truck's own saddle tank, not the huge tank of fuel it was hauling.

POLLUTANTS STILL LEAKING AFTER CHEVRON FIRE

Smog-producing hydrocarbons are still leaking at unlawful levels at the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond in the wake of the Aug. 6 fire there, but pollution control officials said they expect to stop it by today and Chevron could face $25,000 daily fines.
"The leak has been isolated and will stop as soon as tomorrow," said Dan Tillema, an investigator of chemical incidents for the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, during a public briefing about government inquiries into the refinery fire held Monday morning at the Richmond City Council chamber.
While the exact size of the hydrocarbon leak has yet to be verified, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District estimates that it is 5,000 parts per million, a low level still considered a violation of federal air quality standards.

The Maynard Fire Department and Environmental Protection Agency remain on scene Tuesday morning after an open container of mercury was discovered in a home on Martin Street.
The neighbor of a resident called the Fire Department about noon on Monday, Aug. 27, when she discovered the container in the basement of 9 Martin St.
"Initially it was believed that there were chemicals being stored in containers in the basement on shelves. Upon discovery of the mercury the regional hazardous materials team were activated," according to Fire Chief Anthony Stowers.
He said upon further investigation it was determined there were a number of chemicals being stored in the basement and in the garage that need to be removed.
The EPA was brought in to begin cleanup operations.
Maynard Police Lt. James Dawson said the situation was being handled by the fire department and police were simply helping control the scene, which is just off Main Street.
Dawson said the homeowner was known to town officials and there had been issues with the home before.

The fire that broke out at a recycling yard in Sun Valley last week may have started due to a "hot load," or a chemical reaction caused by improper disposal of household items, Waste Management officials said Tuesday.
Hot loads occur when a combination of chemicals in a recycling or trash container, along with heat, creates a reaction, said Lily Quiroa, spokeswoman with Waste Management.
One firefighter suffered a hand injury as he and others battled the early morning blaze at the 11616 Sheldon St.
Video surveillance of the site shows that smoke erupted from a pile debris just after 3 a.m., Quiroa said.
Firefighters described the pile of burning debris as the size of a football field.
Quiroa said the fire is a reminder to use every last drop of household hazardous waste items before dumping the containers. Any leftover products should be properly labeled and stored for disposal at a local household hazardous waste collection facility.

A tanker carrying a highly inflammable chemical, vinyl acetate monomer, developed a leakage after an unidentified vehicle brushed against it near the Dehu Road octroi post on the Pune-Mumbai highway on Tuesday morning.
The fire brigade personnel of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) managed to plug the leakage though the fumes of the chemical had in the meantime spread over Nigdi and nearby areas.
The police said the driver of the tanker, Muzaffar Hussain (32), was injured in the accident. The tanker was on its way from Mumbai to deliver the chemical to a Chikhli-based company.

RICHMOND -- A final report on Chevron's massive Aug. 6 refinery fire could potentially lead to prosecution of the energy giant and serve as an impetus for federal regulatory reform, investigators said Monday.
"We want to take the lessons learned here to all refineries," said Dan Tillema, lead investigator for the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, a federal agency that has been at the accident site since Aug. 7. Tillema and representatives from four other investigative agencies briefed the public and elected leaders on the status of their probe.
The fire broke out in the No. 4 crude unit of the 240,000-barrel-per-day refinery after leaking 600-degree hydrocarbon liquid from an 8-inch pipe created a huge vapor cloud. Four workers suffered minor injuries, and more than 14,000 residents visited area hospitals in the subsequent weeks, complaining of respiratory problems and other discomforts.

STUDENTS HURT IN NSW SCIENCE LAB EXPLOSION

ELEVEN students and a teacher are being monitored in hospital after an explosion at a high school science lab in the NSW southern highlands.
Paramedics were called to the Moss Vale school at 12.43pm (AEST) on Tuesday after a glass flask containing the chemical sodium hydroxide exploded.
The science class of 23 year 7 students was doing a routine "fountain" experiment when the accident occurred, Tom Cooper of NSW Fire and Rescue said.
"They were conducting a fountain experiment where you have a flask down below and some tubing that goes up into another flask above it and you try to create a gas," he told Fairfax radio.
"The gas inside the top of the flask has caused it to explode and basically the students have been splashed with one of the chemicals."
The students suffered slight burns to their hands and faces, he said.
Emergency crew members wet the students down and they were transferred to Bowral hospital where they are in a stable condition.

A contractor is working to clean four gallons of a spilled chemical at an industrial company on Megunko Street.
The driver of a tanker delivery truck spilled liquid caustic soda this morning at Nyacol Nano Technologies after encountering a problem with a supply line, fire Lt. David Iarussi said. The spill did not cause any injuries and the chemical remained on pavement, away from groundwater, he said.
The Ashland Board of Health and the state Department of Environmental Protection have been notified, per protocol, Iarussi said.
Nyacol makes chemicals for flame-retardant fabrics and plastics.

SIX WAREHOUSES STORING CHEMICALS AND PAINT DESTROYED IN SHARJAH FIRE

SHARJAH // Forty workers were evacuated from six blazing warehouses and a small diesel depot in Hamriya Free Zone 2 on Sunday.
The warehouses contained chemicals and paint.
Sharjah Civil Defence said emergency services were notified of the fire at about 9pm. Crews were on the scene within five minutes.
"We first evacuated workers in the warehouses to a safe place," said a civil defence spokesman. "There were about 40 workers on site at the time but no one was hurt."
Firefighters from Sharjah City, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain helped to bring the blaze under control within 90 minutes. Teams continued the cooling process on Monday and the area remained cordoned off.

A canister containing organic waste exploded on Monday in the Technion's bio-technological lab causing a 28-year-old PhD student to sustain light injuries.
The student was bandaged at the scene and taken to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa for further treatment. The canister apparently blew up due to a chemical reaction. (Ahiya Raved & Carmit Reuven)

At least five Somali children have been killed playing with an explosive in their school playground.
Around a dozen other youngsters were wounded in the large blast in the town of Balad, which is situated around 20 miles north of the capital Mogadishu.
It is thought the deadly device discovered by the children was left over from fighting in the area.
The explosion happened shortly after the school day started on Monday.
"There was a heavy explosion, we believe caused by an explosive device that they had been playing with," said Abdi Jinow Alasow, governor for the Middle Shabelle region.
