A fog machine went out of control at a pre-party for the Teen Choice Awards in Hollywood, sending six young people to the hospital and causing burns and breathing problems for several others.
The machine at the Avalon nightclub belched out fog so thick that some partygoers could barely see, KNBC-TV reported, throwing the club into chaos shortly after 6:00 p.m. Saturday.
Boy band Midnight Red, which was scheduled to perform at the event, initially suggested on its Twitter feed that "smoke canisters" had gone off inside the club and a riot had erupted.
A total of 22 people between the ages of 8 and 20 were assessed at the scene, with six needing further treatment.
"Along with respiratory irritation, a few patrons who contacted dripping liquid from apparent heavy use of smoke effect have superficial burn [injuries],'' Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

A Lifetime Fitness building on Regency Parkway in Cary is back to normal after being evacuated because of a chemical leak in the pool area.
A spokeswoman for Cary says the leak was reported about 11:40 a.m.
She said a couple hundred people were in the building at the time. 50-100 who could not retrieve their keys or belongings were evacuated to a nearby Residence Inn.
Raleigh Hazmat was called out to check the building and Cary Fire and EMS units were standing by. The spokeswoman said no injuries had been reported.

Philadelphia police are investigating an underground hazardous materials situation in Northeast Philadelphia.
Police say someone poured gasoline into the sewer and then ignited it.
This happened near Academy Road and Nanton Drive.
Hazmat crews were called in to flush the gasoline out of the sewer system. No one was hurt.

The Winnipeg Fire Services hazardous materials response unit spent hours trying to clear a potentially lethal amount of ammonia from a business Saturday evening.
Naleway Foods in the Inkster Industrial Park was evacuated Saturday when a large ammonia leak was discovered in a freezer area.
The hazmat unit spent a large chunk of time trying to safely release the chemical into the air.
Fire officials said the vapour was more of an irritant but could be poisonous in large amounts.
Everyone made it out of the business safely, without coming in contact with the vapour.
Food inspectors were also on scene investigating.

A CHEMICAL explosion at a research and development lab at Bedford Park has forced the evacuation of the facility while firefighters neutralised the area.
Six Metropolitan Fire Service vehicles were called to the lab, on Flinders Drive, about 3.15pm after a small explosion involving a chemical known as picric acid.
The explosion was limited to one room.
Firefighters wore protective clothing and worked, with advice from on-site chemists, to neutralise the spill.
An MFS spokeswoman said staff were evacuated as a precaution but no one was injured in the incident.

An early Friday morning fire destroyed nearly two-dozen storage units bordering Murray and Millcreek.
Unified Fire Authority, Murray, South Salt Lake and Salt Lake City crews responded to the two-alarm, 12:37 a.m. blaze at a storage facility near 4000 South and Main Street. In all, about 50 firefighters battled the flames.
Fire investigators say the fire was ignited when sparks from a grinder a man was using to sharpen a lawn mower blade in one of the units ignited a nearby gasoline can. By the time firefighters arrived, flames and heavy smoke were pouring from an entire row of storage units, according to UFA spokesman Steve Ball.
It took several hours to snuff the fire, since firefighters had to attack each of the blazing units individually, cutting locks off their steel doors. "All of them were filled with combustibles," Ball said.

Over 300 people were forced from their hotel, when police found a mobile meth lab in one of the rooms.
Fire alarms went off at the Hampton Inn at 13th and Race around 5:30 Saturday morning. When fire crews arrived they found a hotel room on the 3rd floor full of chemicals. Their first thought was that a bomb was being made in the room. After hazmat crews investigated, they discovered it was a mobile meth lab.
366 guests were evacuated from the building while police checked out the scene.
Lye and Acetone were found in gallon buckets in the hotel. Deputy Fire Chief, Derrick Sawyer tells Fox29, if these two chemicals were mixed incorrectly, they could have caused an explosion.

Hazardous materials crews were called to an Elk Grove Village business Friday afternoon after a worker driving a forklift clipped the bottom of a 55-gallon drum and caused a small chemical leak.
The leak occurred about 2 p.m. at Porreca Freight Inc., 77 Garlisch Drive, according to the Elk Grove Fire Department.
It's unknown what type of chemical was being stored in the drum, but it was hazardous to breath, according to Lt. Michael Sharp, the department's acting battalion chief.
Hazmat crews were able to mitigate the small spill by putting down an absorbent, until a hazmat cleanup company arrived after 5 p.m. to take care of the major cleanup work, Sharp said.

MEXICO, Maine Ñ Five people were evaluated for exposure to dry chemicals Friday morning after a fire-suppressant system malfunctioned at the Mexico Food Trend/Circle K Shell station.
Nozzles over the pumps in the fuel-station canopy blasted out a huge cloud at 10:15 a.m. that enveloped people and vehicles with ANSUL PLUS-FIFTY C, fire and Med-Care Ambulance officials said.
It is a sodium bicarbonate-based dry chemical agent with chemical additives that can cause skin and eye irritation, said Chris Moretto, Med-Care assistant chief. But none of the people exposed had any symptoms, he said.
"There was no fire or anything that set it off," Mexico fire Chief Gary Wentzell said. "I guess it was just a malfunction."

FIRE GUTS CHEMICAL CONTAINER IN KHORFAKKAN

KHORFAKKAN: The Civil Defence in Khorfakkan with the co-operation of Al Fujairah Civil Defence succeeded in controlling a huge fire that broke out in a container for chemical material in the port of Khorfakkan.
The fire caused major damage to the container and its contents. No human losses were reported.
The details of the incident date back to Saturday when the operations room received a tipoff at 5:00am reporting a fire in a container containing chemical substances.
Accordingly, fire tenders rushed to the spot and found that the fire and the large amounts of smoke were due to the interaction of the chemicals.
The container was loaded with 24 tonnes of nitric acid. The Civil Defence team isolated the burnt container, keeping it away from the other containers in record time which prevented the fire from spreading.
Last week, a warehouse that manufactured furniture located at Sharjah's Industrial Area number three was completely gutted in a fire.

TUBS OF ACID LEFT AROUND WESTWOOD

Four containers of hydrochloric acid were dropped around Westwood Friday afternoon, according to Fire Chief Jaymee Hodges.
Leaking acid turned the asphalt yellow at the intersection of Lafayette Avenue, Ridgewood Road and Forest Avenue. The roads were closed as officials cleaned the scene.
Members of the Bergen County HazMat team, along with the Westwood Fire Department, DPW and Police Department responded to the scene. Officials used baking soda to neutralize the acid before removing it to the DPW.
Three other containers were dropped around town but did not leak. Hodges said officials were unaware of who dropped the containers.
Officials from the Westwood Police Department were not immediately available to say if a crime had been committed. Patch will have more details as they become available.

KOZHIKODE: An explosion in a house near Koyilandy on Saturday morning, in which a woman was seriously injured, has raised the hackles of the cops here.
Though at the first instance the cause of the blast was believed to be a gas cylinder burst, a preliminary examination of the dilapidated house by the scientific experts from the police department found the presence of potassium chlorate in the kitchen of the house. The chemical compound is usually used to make explosives.
The incident took place at around 9am in the house owned by Valiyaveetil Kelu at Maramuttam Theruvu near Koyilandi civil station. But the house was rented out to one Jayapalan, a native of Dharmadam in Kannur four years ago. The injured woman, Preetha (48), is Jayapalan's wife. She has been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

An employee of the United States Postal Service was taken to the hospital on Saturday morning after he became ill while handling a parcel that contained a chemical substance.
The Honolulu Fire Department was called to the Post Office at 335 Merchant Street in downtown Honolulu after the employee, a male in his sixties, reportedly fainted. The man was handling parcels when he discovered one that was wet and had a blue tinge, according to authorities.
The man apparently went to wash his hands after coming into contact with the substance, but reported feeling nauseous and out of breath a short time later and was transported to The Queen's Medical Center.

The University of California has reached an agreement with prosecutors in Los Angeles that settles groundbreaking criminal charges stemming from a 2008 chemistry lab fire at the University of California at Los Angeles.
Under the deal, the university Board of Regents agreed to implement additional safety measures and establish a $500,000 scholarship in the name of Sheharbano "Sheri" Sangji, the 23-year-old research assistant who died on Jan. 16, 2009, 18 days after a chemical she was handling spilled, starting the fire.
The scholarship will be available within the year at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, for students of environmental law.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Shelly Torrealba approved the deal on July 27. The case appears to have been the first of its kind in the nation involving felony charges precipitated by a university chemistry lab accident.

HOME DEPOT EVACUATED FOLLOWING INSECTICIDE SPILL

Fire crews evacuated a Home Depot located at 298 Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon Friday after employees reported a suspicious odor coming from the store, authorities confirmed.
Officials were called out to the home improvement store just past 2:30 p.m. When crews arrived, they evacuated the store as a precaution and started investigating the suspicious odor.
San Diego County Hazmat teams were requested to assist in searching the building for the source of the smell.
At 4:45 p.m., the store was still evacuated, officials said.
Eventually, Hazmat teams found the smell coming from a broken bottle of Malathion, which is a type of insecticide, in the garden section of the store.
Crews cleaned up the spill and began clearing the scene.

SPRINGFIELD Ñ Firefighters are currently on the scene at H.B.A. Cast products at 262 Liberty St., where 40-foot flames are seen shooting from the rear of the building that is reported to be completely engulfed in fire.
Firefighters have evacuated the block and two ladder companies are fighting to make headway against the flames.
Smoke is visible for miles, and several streets around the site are closed.
A regional hazmat team is monitoring air quality in the area. Shortly after 11:00 a.m., radio communications indicated, toxic air was detected in a park on nearby Franklin Street, and police were working to clear people from the area.
At 9:50 a.m a second alarm was called for additional firefighters. There is the possibility of chemical products at the site.

Dennis G. Leger, executive aide to Springfield Fire Commissioner Joseph A. Conant, said there are no known injuries and that Chicopee and West Springfield provided mutual aid. He said the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad is investigating.

UCLA CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR STILL FACES CRIMINAL CHARGES OVER FATAL LAB FIRE

LOS ANGELES - Criminal charges were dismissed today against the Regents of the University of California as the result of an "enforcement agreement" that calls for corrective measures in connection with a December 2008 laboratory fire that caused the death of a staff research assistant.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Shelly Torrealba dismissed the case against the UC regents at the prosecution's request, based upon a 38-page document that calls on the regents to comply with a half-dozen conditions.
Those include acknowledgment and acceptance of "responsibility for the conditions under which the laboratory was operated on Dec. 29, 2008," agreement that none of its representatives or executive employees will make any public statement denying responsibility for the conditions under which the laboratory was operated that day and the establishment of a $500,000 scholarship in the name of the research assistant, Sheharbano "Sheri" Sangji, at University of California, Berkeley's law school, where the 23-year-old woman had been admitted just before her death.
Sangji -- who was not wearing a lab coat -- suffered second- and third- degree burns as she was transferring a highly flammable chemical agent, tert- Butyllithium, when it spilled from a syringe and onto her hands, arms and body and ignited, according to the agreement. She died 18 days later as a result of her injuries.
The agreement also calls on UCLA to pay Cal/OSHA's costs for inspections
conducted before the agreement and for the regents to "continue to cooperate fully and actively with the LADA and Cal/OSHA regarding any alleged violation" of workplace health and safety rules.
The agreement does not involve Patrick Harran, a UCLA chemistry professor, who is still awaiting arraignment Sept. 5 on three felony counts of violating occupational health and safety standards.
"Professor Harran is not responsible for this horrific accident," said Charles Robinson, vice president and general counsel for the University of California. "Justice is not served by the criminal prosecution of Professor Harran. We will continue to provide for Professor Harran's defense and help him fight to clear his name."
Outside court, one of Harran's attorneys, Thomas P. O'Brien, told reporters that Sangji's death was a "horrible tragedy."
"... What happened in that laboratory was an accident, not a crime," the defense lawyer said. "While we all wish this terrible tragedy had not occurred, there is no reasonable explanation for this prosecution and it's been flawed from the start."
In court papers filed Thursday, Harran's attorneys allege that Cal/OSHA senior special investigator Brian A. Baudendistel -- who prepared a report that served as the basis for an affidavit that resulted in an arrest warrant for Harran -- was prosecuted as a 16-year-old for first-degree murder "during a failed drug deal."

The Army bomb disposal team has made safe an unstable chemical at a disused school laboratory in Cork city.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called by gardai after a quantity of dinitrophenylhydrazine was found during renovations at St Finbarr's Seminary, Farranferris yesterday.
The team arrived at about 7.50pm and removed the chemical to waste ground where it was made safe by controlled explosion. Within an hour the scene was declared safe.
Chemical re-agent Dinitrophenylhydrazine is routinely used in laboratories but can become unstable overtime.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Ñ A judge Friday dropped criminal charges against University of California regents stemming from a 2008 UCLA lab accident in which a worker died after suffering severe burns.
Instead, the court approved a 38-page agreement in which the Board of Regents arranged to take "comprehensive corrective safety measures" and establish a $500,000 scholarship in the name of the lab assistant who was killed, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said in a statement.
The regents could have faced millions of dollars in fines if convicted of three counts of willfully violating occupational health and safety standards causing death.
The criminal case continues against UCLA chemistry professor Patrick Harran. He faces up to 4 1/2 years in prison if convicted of all three felony counts.
UCLA Chancellor Gene W. Block called the charges against Harran "unwarranted" and said the university and the regents continue to stand by him.
"We will continue to fully provide for his defense," he said, adding that Harran is "a valued and respected member of the faculty."
