The Iowa City Landfill is still burning, and the city of Iowa City has released more information about the landfill fire that started Saturday and spread on Sunday, including testing done on the quality of the air.

According to a city release, air quality measurements taken in Iowa City, North Liberty and Coralville by local officials from the Johnson County Health Department working in concert with personnel from the State Hygienic Lab have revealed normal levels of chemicals in the air expected from smoke of this type.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has advised that these agencies continue to monitor the quality of the air as the fire continues to burn, as the fire looks like it will continue burning for several days.

SUBURBAN NY CHLORINE LEAK CAPPED; 1 MINOR INJURY

GREENBURGH, N.Y. Ñ Hazmat workers have capped a chlorine leak at a suburban New York water treatment plant.
A worker at the plant in Greenburgh escaped with minor injuries after the leak on Sunday.
The Yonkers Fire Department sent specially trained hazmat workers.
Yonkers Assistant Fire Chief John Flynn called it a "super dangerous operation." Flynn says that just a small amount of chlorine gas can be deadly if inhaled.
The Journal News (http://lohud.us/KmkvQH ) says a small amount of gas escaped outside the plant. However, readings showed there was no public threat and it quickly dissipated.

URBANA -- One person received minor injuries on Monday night after being splashed with chemicals that were sent falling after a shelf collapsed in a third-floor laboratory inside the Institute for Genomic Biology.
That person refused medical treatment and was released, said UI police Lt. Todd Short. The mixing of chemicals that resulted from the collapse prompted a hazardous-materials warning from the University of Illinois.
The materials release, which happened about 10:15 p.m., was confined to the one lab, according to UI spokeswoman Robin Kaler. The Urbana Fire Department was still on the scene early Tuesday morning and working with the UI Division of Research Safety to clean the affected area, Short said.
According to the institute's website, researchers there study items including bioenergy, climate change, regenerative medicine, drug development, and understanding cancer at the cellular level.

A large chemical fire has destroyed part of a factory warehouse in Greenwich, sending plumes of smoke billowing over the city.
8:51AM BST 28 May 2012
The blaze started at 2.30am in a range of industrial units in Peterboat Close - close to the Blackwall Tunnel entrance on the south side of the river.
London Fire Brigade sent 60 firefighters to tackle the flames at the warehouse, which contained 60 tonnes of powdered and tablet forms of calcium hypoculdrite.
The chemical is used as a bleaching agent in most household cleaning products and as a disinfectant for water and swimming pools - it is known to sometimes self heat.
The 80m long warehouse was 50 per cent alight but the fire is now under control. A safety zone of 25m was set up but no one was injured in the blaze.

COVENTRY CHEMICALS FACTORY HIT BY FIRE

A FIRE broke out on Sunday night at a chemical factory near Coventry.
Fire crews were called to Coventry Chemicals Ltd in Siskin Drive, Baginton, at 6.25pm.
One passer-by said: "I was driving past the airport along Rowleys Road when I heard a loud bang.
"I stopped the car and got out and saw this huge plume of smoke."
A spokesman for Warwickshire Fire Service said: "Five fire engines and a support vehicle attended the scene.
"They found a severe fire at the rear of the two-storey building where around 50 tonnes of palettes were alight. The scene was quickly made safe by fire crews."
It is not yet known how the fire started or if there was anybody in the building at the time.

ARKANSAS OILFIELD EXPLOSION KILLS THREE

Three men were killed on May 21 north of El Dorado, Arkansas, while dismantling an abandoned containment vessel for petroleum at an old oil well site. The workers, employed by Long Brothers Oil Company of Norphlet, were burned when a spark apparently ignited residual oil vapour in the vessel.
The blast comes almost a week after a massive explosion at the El Dorado Chemical facility north of El Dorado, which caused extensive damage to the plant, which makes ingredients for fertiliser.

TUCSON - Investigators are working to determine the cause of a chemical spill at a plant on Tucson's south side.
Tucson Fire Captain Jeff Langejans says around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, an operator from Sasol North America's plant in the 7800 block of South Kolb Road, noticed that hydrochloric acid (HC1) was pooling in a spill containment area.
After investigating, workers determined that a 12,000 gallon HC1 above-ground storage tank was leaking at a rate of five gallons per minute. The chemical is 35% solution and is extremely corrosive.
Workers started off-loading the tank, which had approximately 9,000 gallons. An estimated 4,000 gallons of the liquid had been spilled into the secondary containment area.
Tucson Fire crews responded around 5 a.m. as a precautionary measure. They remained on scene until the leaking tank was emptied into other storage tanks.
No employees or firefighters were injured.

A fire erupted yesterday (26 May) morning in a chemical storage unit at the Sri Jayawardanepura University, Fire Service Department sources told The Nation. An emergency call was placed at around 11.30 a.m. yesterday to the Fire Service Department regarding a fire at the university, the source confirmed. A dispatch unit from the Kotte station and two units from the Main Fire Station were dispatched immediately, to quell the fire, he explained. No casualties were incurred due to the fire, since Firefighters were quick to arrive at the scene to put it out, informed sources in the University pointed out to The Nation.
When inquired as to the causes for the breakout of fire in a chemical storage unit, with a university campus, Fire Services officials said that no conclusive reasons were identified for its onset. However, they stated that the storage unit was flooded due to the recent rains that had most of Colombo under water. University sources also confirmed that the storage unit became flooded due to the rains.
When asked why a hazardous materials site, such as the storage unit, did not have adequate preventive measures against such inevitabilities, Fire officials stated that it was a serious risk that must have been addressed by the university administration.However the university sources declined to comment.

Around 100 residents and workers were evacuated after fire broke out in a waste plant sparking a chemical alert.
The blaze in a number of large oil drums caused plumes of black smoke visible from miles around as it spread through Arrow Environmental Services in West Bromwich.
Acrid smoke shot into the air from the fire, which started at around 1.45pm in part of the premises used to recycle waste oil.

Staff at the firm in Kelvin Way faced a huge clean-up today as oil had flooded from the building onto land outside. The cause is not yet known but it is suspected the hot weather may be to blame. Workers at the scene described how the flames escalated in seconds and a series of bangs followed.
Around 35 firefighters tackled the blaze at its height and hazardous materials officers were drafted in. Firefighter Steve Husbands said crews faced a fight to stop the waste oil entering water courses. Also an oxygen cylinder exploded, causing a fireball, and about seven other cylinders had to be removed amid fears they would also blow up.
Arrow declined to comment.
