Summary
This position is responsible to assist the COO in the development and implementation of a safety culture and programs for MPFI. This position is responsible for designing and implementing
policy around biosafety and biosecurity principles, policies and procedures by using NIH and other relevant guidelines while adhering to relevant laws and regulations. MPFI will provide access to an experienced EH&S consultant available for advice and guidance
to assist well qualified but less experienced candidates.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Implementing and maintaining company policies adhering to local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations.

Act as the focal point for the Bio-agent registry and Laboratory self-assessment programs; coordinate permits.

Conduct laboratory and vivarium compliance audits, and risk assessments to provide guidance and direction to correct deficiencies.

Provide guidance to research & vivarium staff in developing bio-safety practices.

Conduct bio-safety training modules for laboratory personnel and support staff and bio-safety reviews.

Review research protocols involving infectious agents, human materials, toxins of biological origin, etiological agents, and recombinant DNA to provide advice concerning the proper personal
protective equipment and bio containment for these agents.

Conduct accident investigations and comply with all OSHA regulations and guidelines.

Administer bio medical waste program, exposure control plan and emergency response plan (hurricane preparedness).

Evaluate any EPA requirements.

Maintain all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and audit records and prepare supporting data. for required government, industry and management reports.

Provide new employees with Safety Orientation and training and verify proper signage throughout labs.

Meet with new PIs to review their research needs, and determine how their research impacts MPFI security and permits. Proactively contact and support new PIs to assist them in their arrival
and ensure their research program is implemented rapidly, efficiently and effectively with regard to permit or permissions requirements for compliance with EH&S regulations and policies.

Ensure compliance with EH&S, federal and state standards and in particular, ensure EH&S compliance with regard to receipt of federal funds such as NIH grants.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree in safety, environmental or related field from four-year College or university OR training
and work experience at a level that equates BS degree and 2+ years of experience.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Have a working knowledge of regulatory laws (e.g., EPA, OSHA, etc..)

Possess problem solving, trouble-shooting, and diagnostic skills.

Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Work independently and organize and prioritize assignments based on input from COO.

Work with a multicultural population and foster a collaborative work environment.
-
Good knowledge of OSHA, NIH, CDC, USDA, FAA, DOT, and state of FL safety rules and regulations is preferred.
