David Rittenhouse Laboratory was evacuated around 12:45 p.m. Sunday due to reports of a small methane and hydrogen spill in the basement.
About 13 firetrucks from the Philadelphia Fire Department including a HAZMAT team arrived on scene. The team investigated and found no detectable leak, according to Division of Public Safety spokesperson Stef Karp. There were no injuries.
The incident was due to a malfunction in the building's flammable gas alarm. As a precaution, the room's gas bottles were shut down, Karp wrote in an email.
Nursing junior Meghan O'Neill was working in the multimedia center in the basement of the building when she was forced to evacuate. She said she didn't hear an alarm in the building, but firefighters came in and told her to evacuate.
The trucks left at about 1:10 p.m., and Penn Police deemed it safe for people to return to the building.

Six people were killed in two different accidents, including an explosion that brought down a four-storey building in southern China today.
Five people were killed and four others seriously injured when a building collapsed, after an explosion in a nearby garage in east China's Fujian Province.
Rescuers are searching the debris for survivors.
The accident was triggered by an explosion that ripped through a garage and toppled a four-storey building in Daji Village of Longyan City.
The building was a residential complex owned by Shubang Coal Mine.

FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO SMALL CHEMICAL FIRE

A small chemical fire April 13 forced the temporary evacuation of CK Enterprises, 1204 S.W. Jefferson St.
The Lee's Summit Fire Department responded at 1:23 p.m. to the business, where occupants had called 911 to report a fire involving a chemical product in a warehouse.
When firefighters arrived, light smoke was visible from the back of the business and all employees had been evacuated.
Plant staff provided information on the burning product to firefighters, who went inside the building and found the smoldering remains of several buckets containing a powdered cleaning product.
The heat from the initial fire activated one fire sprinkler head over the area. The sprinkler system contained the fire to the buckets of the chemical product and some nearby boxes. Firefighters completed extinguishment of the fire and moved the debris outside of the building. Crews then shut off the sprinkler head and assisted with smoke removal while assessing for any additional hazards.
The incident was under control by 2:24 p.m., with damage contained to the buckets containing the chemcial product and to nearby equipment and boxes, which sustained minor damage.
The cause of the fire was determined to be a chemical reaction of two materials being used to develop a new cleaning product.
After completion of smoke removal and air monitoring, the business was able to be reoccupied.

KIMBALL HALL CHEMICAL SPILL 'VERY MINOR,' C.U. SAYS

Kimball Hall was closed Friday morning due to a "very minor" chemical spill of mercury, according to Claudia Wheatley, deputy University spokesperson.
"It looks like something terrible happened, but it's a small amount of mercury," Wheatley said. "They operate under, Ôbetter safe than sorry.'"
Wheatley compared the chemical spill to a scene in the movie Monster's Inc., when one of the characters "comes out of the room with a sock on his back" and is treated as if he had been contaminated with a deadly virus.
"That's kind of how it was," Wheatley said of the spill. "It was nothing."

CRUDE METHOD FOR MAKING METH: A ÔHAZARDOUS COCKTAIL'

A crude method for manufacturing methamphetamine is putting the safety of the general public in jeopardy, including those who would never intentionally get anywhere near the drug, according to police.
The so-called "shake-and-bake" method involves combining raw, unstable ingredients in a container and leaving it somewhere to bake, typically outside. Manufacturers often use two-liter plastic soda bottles and place them near walking trails and rural roadsides.
Steuben County Undersheriff Ray Dell said ingredients such as cold medicine are mixed with common household chemicals, and they produce enough meth for the user to get a few hits.
"It's a cocktail of hazardous chemicals, and its use, especially in southern Steuben County, is growing at an unbelievable rate," Dell said.
Not only are the chemicals toxic, but the mini meth labs can explode with enough force to maim.
"(An explosion) occurs if the appropriate formula is not used," said Mike Sprague, the director of the Steuben County Office of Emergency services. "People often toss the two-liter bottles on the side of the road so if it doesn't react properly, it won't blow up at their residence."

General Motors Co. was quick to fend off new fears about electric cars Wednesday, after the company said an explosion was caused by gases venting from an experimental battery pack inside a battery lab at the General Motors Tech Center in Warren. The explosion led to the hospitalization of one employee.
The 8:45 a.m. incident inside a small room at the lab was likened by GM to a natural gas explosion, as gases from a battery gathered in the room during extreme testing and ignited. GM said the battery pack remained intact.
One worker who was injured was being kept for observation overnight at an area hospital, said GM spokesman Alan Adler. He declined to release the extent of the man's injuries, nor what he did in the lab.
Four other people were evaluated by medical personnel after the explosion blew out windows and damaged at least part of the global battery lab inside the Alternative Energy Center.
The Detroit automaker, just a few hours after the incident, was quick to point out that the battery being tested was unrelated to the Chevrolet Volt or any other production vehicle.

University laboratories in the United States have suffered nearly 120 explosions, fires, and chemical releases in the past decade, according to a federal tally. But until late last year, the number of criminal charges filed over lapses in laboratory safety was zero.
Frustrated safety experts see a connection between those two statistics. Universities and their researchers don't take lab safety seriously, the safety experts say, and nobody has really ever forced them

A semi-truck, traveling south on state Road 44 about five miles south of Manila, rolled spilling unknown amounts of a chlorite solution, and injuring the driver.
State Road 44, which connects from Highway 191 to Manila near Flaming Gorge, was shut down around 1:30 p.m. but was back open about an hour later, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Rex Olsen.
The driver, the only person in the truck at the time, was taken by air ambulance to a Salt Lake City area hospital, according to Daggett County Sheriff's Office public information officer Karen Peterson.
Peterson said the spill is "a type of toxin, but it's not explosive or hazardous in any type of fire, but it can harm if touched or inhaled."
Uintah County Fire Marshall Jeremy Raymond said a hazmat crew was dispatched from Vernal to clean up a chlorite solution, "basically a bleach solution."
UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said 11-12 containers filled with the bleach solution spilled, and each was damaged in some way. Our reporter on scene said the containers could have been holding 300-500 gallons.
Johnson said the spill was "above a water source, but not in a water source," and there was "no immediate threat...to a water source."

MAPLETON Ñ
A fire Friday night at a chemical manufacturer sent three firefighters to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Timber Hollis Fire Chief Guadalupe Arteaga said firefighters were dispatched a little after 8 p.m. on reports of a medium-sized fire at Lonza Inc. Within 30 minutes, Arteaga said firefighters were able to get the fire under control with the help of fire brigade personnel from Lonza's emergency response team.
Two firefighters from Timber Hollis and one member of Lonza's team were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Units from the Peoria County Sheriff's Department and Glasford Police Department were on scene to assist in the event that traffic had to be shut down on Route 24, but no hazardous materials or other airborne agents were released into the air as a result of the fire.

Sparks from a burn barrel ignited a fire at a warehouse at Graham Dairy Supply in Hempfield on Saturday morning.
Dennis Graham, who owns the company that his father started in 1941, said he was burning trash in a barrel behind his warehouse at 1581 Business Route 66 when sparks flew and caused nearby plastic containers to catch fire. Within minutes, the fire spread to the large warehouse, he said. A call was placed to emergency dispatch at about 10:30 a.m.
Fire officials at the scene said there were no reported injuries.
Black smoke billowed from the brown metal warehouse, and the smell of burning plastic filled the air as firefighters from at least nine departments doused the blaze from ladders extended above the building from nearby fire engines.
No one was in the warehouse at the time, and the fire did not spread to an adjacent office, Graham said.
He did not have an estimate of damages, but said the warehouse contained five antique tractors, plastic containers and products he sells to dairy farmers, such as cleaning supplies, iodine, wash cloths and milk filters.
Jim Barkley, who lives about a quarter mile from the supply company, said he heard two explosions and the ground shook when the fire began.
"I sat up and looked out my window and there was a big cloud of smoke," Barkley said.
Activity at the fire scene shut down a stretch of Route 66 north of Greensburg for several hours. It took firefighters more than five hours to clear the scene.
Two white inflatable medic tents were set up for firefighters to rehydrate and to allow medics to check firefighters' vital signs and later rinse any chemical residue from clothes and equipment, said Edgar Grant, manager of Penn Township Ambulance.

ince the advent of the so-called "shake and bake" or "one-pot" meth-making process, the number of incidents involving explosions and fires Ñ and serious injuries Ñ has increased dramatically in Franklin County.
"We've worked more of these (meth-related fires) in the last two years than we did in the previous decade," remarked Detective Sgt. Jason Grellner, head of the Franklin County Narcotics Enforcement Unit.
Last month, two people were burned, one seriously, when a one-pot meth lab exploded as they were driving in a car near St. Clair. A third suspect in the car was not injured. The vehicle was destroyed.
The man who sustained serious injuries had been holding the lab Ñ contained in a 2-liter plastic bottle Ñ on his lap when it exploded.
County authorities do not keep specific records on the number of people who have been burned or otherwise injured in meth lab explosions and fires, but they agree that it's much higher since the one-pot meth burst on the scene in 2009.
"In the last two years, 80 percent of the meth lab fires I've investigated have involved one-pot labs," said Jim Schuhmacher, Franklin County arson investigator.

ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) - It was not the first stop to cook meth for the suspects, Robert Catoe and Heather Latham in York County. The Multi Jurisdictional Drug Task Force Commander Marvin Brown says they've discovered now six different motels in York County where they know the duo had been making the drugs.
He also told WBTV's Trent Faris through the course of the investigation that number could triple.
Brown said Catoe and Latham would check into the motels under aliases, moving their meth making materials around by van.
Friday, while she was cleaning the room the owner of the Hillside Motel told WBTV when Catoe and Latham checked in last week they told her they were moving to Rock Hill from Arizona and need a place to stay while they looked for a house to buy.
"They jumped from motel room to motel room cooking meth and we knew that so we tried to hone in on them to try and stop this before someone got hurt," said Brown
The owner who didn't want to be identified went on to say Latham would pay for their stay every day, and three days prior to the bust Catoe paid the bill. The change prompted her to have her house keeper check on the room and nothing was out of the ordinary.

Almost 1 000 employees fled their offices in the Randburg CBD this morning after gas leaked into the ventilation system at their work premises.
JDG Trading, based in Kent Avenue, was in chaos as employees were evacuated. Five were seriously injured from gas inhalation.
Netcare spokesman Jeff Wicks said a mid-morning emergency call was made from the building after staff complained of tickling throats and difficulty breathing.
Paramedics and hazard material (hazmat) teams rushed to the scene.
Eight people received treatment at the scene. Five were in respiratory distress. The eight were quickly moved to a medical station set up further away from the noxious gases.
By 11am the five were stable.
Hazmat teams were still trying to find the source of the leak about 11am. Paramedics were unable to confirm what type of gas had leaked.

A man was burned by chlorine gas Friday morning after the chemical leaked at a pool supply store near the US 41 bypass.
According to Sarasota County Fire Department Capt. Susan Pearson, at around 10 a.m., a tank on a chlorine truck suddenly released more than 30 gallons of the gas.
"They called in the calvary, but it wasn't really an explosion," Pearson said.
The worker was burned by the gas, Pearson said. She was not sure if he was the driver or an employee of the store, but was taken to Venice Memorial Hospital for treatment. No one else was injured, she said.

Police have removed what they say is explosive material from the backyard of the former Forest Hill home of Byron Sonne, the so-called "G20 geek," nearly two years after his arrest for allegedly possessing explosives.
Closing arguments in Sonne's trial ended Monday and it is unclear what effect, if any, this new evidence will have in the case, or if the Crown can lay new charges.
Toronto police, including members of the Explosive Disposal Unit, firefighters and ambulance were called early Wednesday to a Forest Hill home near Bathurst St. and Eglinton Ave., the house Sonne once shared with his now estranged wife. She still lives there, according to neighbours.
Toronto police investigator Tam Bui said investigators went to the home to follow up on evidence that came out in Sonne's trial.
The trial heard that during an online chat May 29, 2010, Sonne talked about a "storage magazine'' buried in the shady part of the backyard of the home, "sealed and hidden'' and containing potassium chlorate.
Potassium chlorate can be used to make both explosives and propellants for rockets, his trial heard.

SAN ANTONIO -
Three children were sent to the hospital following a hydrochloric acid vapor leak at a Northwest Side fitness club Thursday evening.
Hazmat crews were called the Spectrum Fitness Club in the 11700 block of Bandera Road after the children and three other teens began complaining of burning eyes, coughing and throat irritation in the pool area.
Fire officials say the vapor leak was caused by an apparent malfunction with a pump attached to a container with the hydrochloric acid.
The three children were taken to the hospital for treatment. The teens were treated at the scene.

BRICK Ñ Emergency crews responded Thursday morning to a Reedy Drive home for a report of a house that had become filled with fumes.
The culprit: a clogged commode.
The resident of the home, 74-year-old Robert Byrne, had poured bleach into a stopped-up toilet in his upstairs bathroom the previous night, according to Capt. John E. Rein Jr. of the township police. Noticing Thursday morning that the bleach didn't do the trick, Byrne dumped sulfuric acid into the toilet.
The chemical mixture set off an alarming reaction, causing a foam buildup and fumes to fill the home, Rein said. The fumes caused Byrne breathing difficulties and he was sent to Ocean Medical Center in town for treatment. His dog, too, was affected by the exposure and was turned over to a relative, Rein said.

Ontario fire and police departments have responded to a hazardous material call at a business complex in the 200 block of Milliken Avenue.
About 30 personnel from Ontario police and fire, hazmat and San Bernardino County hazardous material team are on scene and have evacuated the business. No injuries have been reported.
Shortly before 1:30 p.m. fire officials said they would be detonating the control material in the next half hour. While the explosion will cause a loud noise, officials said there was no danger to the surrounding areas.
Ontario fire officials are still trying to determine the composition of the materials, said Jacob Green with Ontario Fire Department.
Green said fire officials also still don't have details about the materials used by the business.
Businesses in the area reported receiving automated messages from the Fire Department informing them of the activity.
