MORROW, OH (FOX19) - A Morrow Police officer who pulled a man over on what appeared to be a simple speeding ticket soon found a lot more than he expected.
When Sergeant Matt Landrum stopped 23-year-old Jacob Yost of Hillsboro, OH for speeding on US 22/3 in Morrow, he says he also found that Yost was driving under suspension. When he asked if he could search the car, Yost agreed, then volunteered that there was a meth lab in the trunk.
Sgt. Landrum didn't find a meth lab, but he did find all the ingredients for making meth, including pseudoephedrine pills, Muriatic acid (also known as hydrochloric), lithium batteries, a moisture absorbing chemical, and more. He says these are ingredients for the "one-pot" method of making methamphetamine.
The find led to a big response at US 22/3 and front street. One witness counted 8 police cars from the Sheriff's Office, Hamilton Township, and Morrow, along with two fire trucks. Fortunately for the authorities, since meth production had not begun, hazmat crews were not required.

VAPOR CLOUD CAUSES PLANT EVACUATION ON EAST SIDE

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A vapor cloud is to blame for an early morning HAZMAT evacuation on the city's East Side.
Columbus fire told NBC4 alarms at OPC Polymers at 1920 Leonard Ave. went off at 1:55 a.m. Wednesday.
The plant was mixing a batch of polymers in a 6,500-gallon tank when the mix released a vapor cloud, setting off alarms, Battalion Chief Michael Fowler said.
One person was working in the area when the alarms went off. That employee was not injured.
OPC Polymers went into emergency shutdown, and all employees were evacuated.
Columbus fire and hazmat crews swept the building and gave an all clear.

All three lanes of southbound Interstate 294 remain closed during rush hour as crews offload an acid spill caused by a tanker truck rollover on the highway near Oak Lawn.
The truck was carrying thousands of pounds of hydrochloric acid about 1:30 p.m. when it rolled between the Cicero Avenue and 95th Street exits on Interstate 294. The southbound lanes and one northbound lanes will be closed until about 7 p.m., state police said.

TIPTON COUNTY, Ind. -- U.S. 31 in Tipton County was closed for several hours Tuesday after a crash involving at truck carrying cleaning products.
Police said a tractor-trailer rear-ended a box truck that was stopped at the railroad tracks on U.S. 31 at Division Road on Tuesday morning.
The highway was closed in both directions as a precaution in case any of the cleaning chemicals in the truck had mixed, creating a possibly hazardous situation, police said.
Some chemicals could be seen leaking from the truck. A hazardous chemical team from the Kokomo Fire Department was called in to assess the situation.

SCIENCES BUILDING AT UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS BURNS

The three-story Faculty of Sciences building of the University of Lagos went up in flames in the early hours of Tuesday morning, destroying the Mathematics and Physics departments on the second and third floors, media reports confirmed.
No lives were lost in the fire incident, which started at about 6 a.m., but academic materials, furnishings and personal belongings were lost in the fire.
Fire fighters from UNILAG's Fire Service, the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire Service and the Union Bank of Nigeria Fire and Rescue Unit combated the fire and put it out at about 9:55 a.m.
Students and lecturers were seen at the fire site desperately trying to salvage their documents and belongings from being destroyed by the fire.

MARCH 20 CHEMICAL SPILL IN ENGINEERING CENTER

At 11:04 a.m. today, University of Colorado students accidentally spilled a chemical in the Engineering Center's Chemical Wing. A student dropped a 100-milliliter glass bottle containing acryloyl chloride, a chemical substance that acts like hydrochloric acid when exposed to the air. The students suffered from irritations to their eyes and immediately activated a fire alarm.
At 11:34 a.m., emergency responders decided to evacuate the Engineering Center. Agencies that responded to the scene were: the University of Colorado Police Department, CU Environmental Health & Safety Department, Boulder Police, Boulder Fire, American Medical Response and the Boulder County Hazardous Materials Team.
The Hazardous Materials Team entered the building around 2:30 p.m. and deemed there was no public health threat, except for inside the Chemical Wing. The building was reopened around 3 p.m. CU Environmental Health & Safety officials cleaned up the spill and reopened the Chemical Wing around 3:45 p.m.
The four students were evaluated by medical staff at the scene and determined to be OK. One female CU student, who was in the Engineering Center but not part of the original incident, reported she had a headache. She was taken to Boulder Community Hospital.
Throughout the incident, the CU Police Department worked with students and instructors with critical experiments inside to safely access the Engineering Center.

REEDSBURG Ñ A chemical fire in a Reedsburg Area High School chemistry class injured three students and a teacher Monday.
The teacher and two of the students were transported to Reedsburg Area Medical Center with minor injuries, Reedsburg Ambulance Director Josh Kowalke said.
One of the students and the teacher then were taken to the University of Wisconsin Burn Center for further treatment.
Two of the students were back in school Tuesday, Principal Rob Taylor said. The teacher is at home recovering and one student is still in Madison. Officials would not confirm the name of the students or the teacher, but there is only one Chemistry II teacher, Corinne Fish, according to the district's website.
Taylor said the experiment that caused the fire is one that has been done "literally hundreds of times" at the school over the years.
"It's an experiment with salt and methanol that makes different-colored flames," Taylor said. "For some reason, this time it caused a bigger flash than usual."
Taylor said a student's sweater caught fire, as did the teacher's lab coat. Several students in the class called 911 while others contacted the front office. The school's emergency response team, including associate principal Matt Terry and assistant principal Gary Syftestad, responded immediately.
"The team performed exactly like they should have," Taylor said. "The girl dropped and rolled and then the teacher unselfishly put out the fire on the young lady while her own arm was still on fire."
Each science lab is equipped with an emergency shower, fire extinguisher and fire blankets, all of which were used to help the teacher and students.

LEMON TWP. - The Butler County Sheriff's Office Bomb Unit responds time-to-time to small, hand-made bombs, but never have they found as many as nine, like the batch found on a residential street Tuesday morning, Butler County sheriff's officials said.
"They think it's a joke and they think it's kind of funny," said Sheriff Rick Jones. "They blow mailboxes up in the process. They blow your fingers off. They spew acid out. It's very dangerous."
Eight of the plastic pop bottle devices - sometimes called "MacGyver," "Drain-O" or "over-pressurized" bombs - blew up in five yards on Hickory Street, said Spc. Mike Grimes, the unit's commander.
Several neighbors reported hearing gunshots around 6:15 a.m. and at least one woman called 911. The street was evacuated for a short time.
"One (explosion) measured over a 15-foot diameter," Grimes said.
At least one partially made bomb was left behind in a driveway, Grimes said. He believes the culprits - thought to be juveniles - were probably in the midst of filling it with chemicals and were scared off by a neighbor or police, Grimes said.

SAVANNAH TEEN SEVERELY BURNED WHILE MIXING CHEMICALS

Authorities said a teenager was taken to the hospital after an apparent chemical explosion.
It happened just after 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment complex on East Waldburg Street near East Broad Street.
Officials tell News 3 a 14 year-old boy was mixing chemicals inside his family's bathroom when there was some kind of reaction and the boy caught fire. Authorities said he ran to a neighbor's apartment, where they were able to put the flames out.
The teen then reportedly went back to his own apartment, contaminating himself and the area.
Crews from HAZMAT, Savannah-Chatham Metro Police, Savannah Fire and Emergency Services, and the bomb squad were all called in to investigate.
Several apartments had to be evacuated and people were decontaminated.
The teen suffered burns to 40 percent of his body and was taken to the Augusta Burn Center. Authorities said his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

MAN INJURED WHEN TORCH SETS OFF BLAST AT MODESTO BOAT SHOP

Modesto Regional Fire Authority crews responded to a call of an injured worker at a Bob's Marine on Oakdale Road on Monday night.
Battalion Chief Hugo Patino said a worker hurt himself while using a blow torch to cut a metal 55-gallon drum. Patino said the drum apparently contained residue from a petroleum product.
The gas vapors were ignited by the torch, which cause the drum to explode, he said.

ONE HURT IN EAST VALLEY PROPANE TANK EXPLOSION

EAST VALLEY, Wash. -- A quick response limited damage from a propane tank fire at All American Propane on South Keys Road on Monday morning, firefighters say.
Chief George Spencer of the East Valley Fire Department said firefighters arrived within just a few minutes of the 8:49 a.m. alarm and were able to stop the fire from spreading from a shop where it was concentrated. Firefighters protected an adjacent storage building as well as large, nearby propane tanks.
Spencer said one worker was taken to a city hospital by private vehicle after suffering cold thermal burns from coming in contact with the propane, which converts to a liquid when frozen. More information was not available about his condition but the injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
Spencer said the 500-gallon tank that started the fire was being moved on a forklift at the time of the incident, which caused black smoke to billow from the area.

Update 11:54 a.m. Irving Fire Department battalion chief Cody Newman said investigators have determined that the carbon monoxide was coming from the boilers. The fire department has allowed guests back into the first floor. They will continue checking the rest of the floors.
Update 10:49 a.m. Irving Fire Department was notified by a paramedic at Las Colinas Medical Center and recognized that several people were coming in with symptoms of typical carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the fire department's spokesman Russell Wilson.

An automatic alarm alerted the on-call city of Coon Rapids public works employee of the chlorine leak about 5 a.m. and the Coon Rapids Fire Department was called in.
According to Fire Chief John Piper, two members of the chemical assessment team, comprising firefighters from the Coon Rapids, Fridley and Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View (SBM), that responded put on hazardous materials suits and went into the water treatment plant to turn off the valves to both chlorine tanks and both sulfur dioxide tanks.
The treatment plant's scrubber system removed the chlorine, Piper said.
According to Rick Bednar, city utilities operations supervisor, the leak was caused by a loose fitting.

SUSSEX TECH REMAINS CLOSED AFTER FIRE

SPARTA -- Sussex County Technical School will remain closed through Thursday, as the school continues to clean up from a fire that started last Wednesday night in a science lab.
The school is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Friday.
The fire, which was caused by a chemical reaction in a 30-gallon garbage can, has forced the district to close for at least six days and will lead to the relocation of eight classrooms and several lockers for the remainder of the school year, according to Interim Superintendent Anthony Macerino.
"Clean-up has commenced and is proceeding well," Macerino said on Monday. "As with any fire or emergency facility situation, air quality tests have been completed."

SKOWHEGAN -- A short circuit in the wiring of a fire suppression system at the Irving Circle K service station Sunday was the apparent cause of a plume of white powder released onto cars and people.
No one was seriously injured, but several people, including three young children, were taken to the hospital to be checked out for possible respiratory problems. Others were examined at the scene of the incident on U.S. Route 201, which is also Madison Avenue.

A woman burned by the leaked chemical tells 13News that the driver of the semi noticed it spilling and asked for cat litter to be tossed on top.
When that happened, the chemical started "boiling."
"I've never seen anything fizz like that," said Kasandra Beckett. She had burns to her fingers that she was treated and released for.
Nearby homeowners were asked to leave but there was no forced evacuation in place.
As to why something like this would happen, Ripley Fire Chief David Brubaker had only the theory of the truck driver.
"One of the straps must have come loose," said Brubaker. "That's why it was leaking out of the back.
Lasting injuries could include breathing issues.
UPDATE
A tractor-trailer carrying the chemical Barchlor started leaking late this morning, according to officials in Jackson County. The chemical is not harmful unless it comes into contact with skin, or if it's inhaled in vapor form. The leaking chemical is in liquid form.
No shelter-in-place has been issued because of the leak, officials said. Six people were contaminated, but they have been treated.
A crew of a nearby chemical plant is on the way to the scene to assess the situation and advise how it should be handled.

Toll Tasmania has taken back control of its transport yard on Hobart's waterfront after a $1 million fire this morning.
The blaze broke out in a warehouse, igniting shipping containers filled with chemicals and foam.
Toxic fumes forced the evacuation of more than six-hundred people.
Some workers were treated at the scene after inhaling the potentially toxic fumes.
The blaze engulfed a shed, several chemical-filled shipping containers and two forklifts.
The Fire Service estimates the blaze has caused $1.2 million damage.
Fire officer Stuart Males says the fire was started by a worker who was using a heat torch near pallets wrapped in plastic.
"It would appear that they used heat perhaps in the form of a blow torch type thing to actually undertake the shrinking process of the packaging," he said.
"Somehow that has caused a spark to ignite some of the material that was being packed."

EXPLODING TIRES STARTLE RESIDENTS

DANVERS Ñ The explosions that woke those in Ann Marie Ruotolo's house on Bates Street early Saturday morning turned out to be tires popping on two burning box trucks parked at Harvey Industries on nearby Water Street.

The explosions could be heard in neighboring Peabody, Ruotolo said.
"I heard two big ones and a few littler ones," said police Sgt. Robert Bettencourt, who lives in Peabody not far from Danversport.
The burning trucks were parked in front of the building products warehouse at 125 Water St., and the fire was reported at 5:01 a.m., Bettencourt said. The trucks were parked in front of the building just off Water Street, which is behind the headquarters of the Pelletier and Milbury Corp. construction company.
The fire appears to have started in a portable forklift mounted at the back of one of the box trucks.

Investigations are continuing into Friday night's chemical scare that led to the Emergency Department at the Calvary Mater Hospital being evacuated and decontaminated.
A 32-year-old Lambton man drank a quantity of the substance sodium azide and was taken by ambulance from Newcastle University to the Mater, where he later died.
Ambulance Officers union spokesman Peter Rumball says two paramedics were among several workers who had to be decontaminated.
"The Hazmat decontaminated them and they were allowed to go home," he said.
"The have since recovered but it just highlights the jobs of ambulance officers across the State, simply going to respond to someone that's ill they could become a victim themselves."
Mr Rumball says the chemical, which is extremely toxic, is used in bio-medical experiments and as an insecticide.
"It can be quite dangerous," he said.
"It can be lethal if it's ingested or absorbed.
"That's why the full decontamination process was put in place at the Mater Hospital to deal with that, to protect not only the patient but members of the nursing staff, doctors and the ambulance officers."

FIRE SUPPRESSION POWDER BLANKETS GAS CUSTOMERS

SKOWHEGAN -- One person was taken to a local hospital Sunday afternoon and several others were examined at the scene after a giant cloud of fire-suppression powder was released without warning at the Irving Circle K station on Madison Avenue, which is also U.S. Route 201.
The powerful plume, emitted from about 50 hoses installed in the roof of the fuel-pumping area, covered vehicles, people and the parking lot with a coating of white powder. The white-out obscured the busy station from view and briefly closed the road to motor vehicle traffic.
The cloud traveled to the Tractor Supply shopping center across the road, then dissipated.
Fire crews, police, emergency medical personnel and an ambulance from Redington-Fairview General Hospital were sent to the scene about 12:30 p.m.
There was no fire, and station managers were unwilling to comment on what might have happened.
Skowhegan Fire Chief Tom Keene said the chemical was a nontoxic compound that can cause mild eye and throat irritation but is not life threatening.

SAN ANGELO, Texas Ñ An OSHA investigation into an explosion that injured three people in January has led to a nearly $5,000 fine for the business.
A conference on March 2 ended with a penalty for two "serious" citations being assessed for S&S Steel Industries, according to a citation and notification of penalty from the U.S. Department of Labor.
In January three people were sent to Shannon Medical Center after a pressurized air tank explosion in the 3800 block of Christoval Road, according to fire officials.
"They were pressure testing a tank that had been built, and it broke loose and exploded," fire Capt. Fred Barnett said in an article published Jan. 17.
According to the OSHA document, "workers were using air to pressure test large noncode vessels. This created an explosion hazard. Workers were exposed to the hazard of being struck by 10,000 lbs. of steel."
