A former graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin is enmeshed in a US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) inquiry after he was stopped for a traffic offence and found to have lab chemicals and equipment in his car.
Karl Jasheway was pulled over by Travis County police near Austin in December 2011 and charged with driving while intoxicated. The FBI's interest in Jasheway only emerged on 9 March as a result of a public-information request filed by Austin-based biosafety advocate Ed Hammond.
At the time of the incident, Jasheway was studying for a PhD in the laboratory of biologist Jon Robertus, known for his pioneering work on the structure of transfer RNA. Jasheway's research was part of the lab's federally funded work to develop an antidote for ricin, a highly toxic protein found in the castor oil plant Ricinus communis and a potential bioterror agent. Jasheway's work involved using a non-toxic component of the protein called the ricin A chain.

ILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A scare at a Wilmington business this morning. Jugs of liquid found in a shipping container led to an evacuation, while police, US Customs and even Homeland Security got involved.

"We started looking at the manifest bill of lading. This particular container was not listed on the bill of lading on the manifest, and we became concerned, and obviously US Customs became concerned as well," Wilmington Fire Department Battalion Chief Jimmy Casteen said.
The hazmat team was able to remove a sample of the liquid from the jugs, which they tested on site to determine what exactly was in them. Turns out, it's not a threat. The liquid appears to be a type of finishing product used on wicker furniture. The fire department says it likely was locked up accidentally in the shipping container in Indonesia and shipped overseas.

DALLAS - The city said it is issuing a Notice of Violation against Medical City Dallas for releasing a bright green dye into White Rock Creek on Wednesday.
Dallas Fire-Rescue's Hazmat team told News 8 the bright green dye, which was non-toxic and biodegradable, was flowing out of a cooling tower at the hospital after contractors tested pipes.

SPARTA Ñ Sussex County Technical School was closed Thursday and will remain closed today after a Wednesday night fire that severely damaged a science classroom, police said.
The township Police Communications Center received a fire alarm from the high school at 8:35 p.m., according to a news release from the police department, which said the alarm was activated by smoke detectors.
Heavy smoke
A janitor reported a heavy smoke condition on the second floor of the building as Sparta firefighters arrived at 8:40 p.m. and entered the building.
On the second floor, a biology, chemistry, environmental lab was filled with thick smoke and flames coming from the base of one of the work tables, police said.
The fire quickly was extinguished and the classroom was ventilated though it sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage. An adjoining classroom also sustained heavy smoke and water damage, police said.
There were no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire was determined to be "nonsuspicious" after an investigation was conducted by the State Police Arson Unit, Sussex County Prosecutor's Office, Sparta Detective Terrence Mulligan and Sussex County Fire Marshal Michael Alvarez.

The fire appears to have started in a plastic garbage can after a chemical reaction occurred inside the container, police said.
The specific types of chemicals involved in the fire still are being determined, but it appeared that some accidentally were discarded in the can. Those chemicals have the potential to be volatile when mixed.

FUME LEAK MARKS THIRD INCIDENT IN SISLER SINCE OCTOBER

A student's experiment caused fumes from hazardous chemicals to leak into the air in Sisler Hall on Thursday night.
The student, who did not want to identify himself, was conducting an experiment alone on the third floor of the building when fumes started to rise from a 6-inch flask, said Gainesville Fire Rescue Lt. Gary Law.
Although GFR called the incident a chemical spill, only fumes leaked from the beaker. Sisler Hall was kept open while GFR inspected the lab where the incident happened.
The student told firefighters he was not hurt, but GFR insisted he go to the hospital as a precautionary measure for fear of inhalation hazards, said GFR Lt. Steve Mueller.
The student was working with a 100 mL mixture of carbon tetrachloride, hexane, triphenylphosphine and water.
The experiment was conducted on a countertop under a hood, which prevented the fumes from being released into surrounding air.
Law said if it had not been for the hood, the situation could have been a lot worse.
This was at least the third incident involving hazardous chemical reactions in Sisler Hall throughout the past year. The first occurred Oct. 11 when a student's vial exploded as he transferred it to a scale. The second was on Jan. 11 when a student's chemical mixture exploded under a protective hood.
GFR would not comment as to why chemical-related accidents keep happening in Sisler Hall.
"But it's something that should be asked," Mueller said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - One lane of Interstate 70 at state Route 256 reopened early Friday morning following a Thursday evening Hazmat cleanup.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a commercial vehicle spilled a cleaning agent onto the road shortly after 6 p.m.
Two lanes of the highway were closed for about four hours.
Traffic was being diverted to S.R. 256, and the ramps to I-70 east from Brice Road and S.R. 256 also were closed, 10TV News reported.
Ohio Department of Transportation officials said that the cleaning agent damaged the pavement, and crews were working to make repairs.

Investigators say lightening most likely started a chemical fire earlier this week at a magnesium plant in a northern Ohio town.
The state fire marshal's office ruled Thursday that the fire at MagReTech Inc. in Bellevue was natural. No one was injured in Tuesday's blaze at the plant, about midway between Toledo and Cleveland.
The office made its findings based on lightning strike data from the National Weather Service, the fire scene investigation and interviews with witnesses.
Four semitrailers containing scraps of magnesium were ignited and burned for more than five hours before the fire was controlled.

BEND, Ore. -- A federal-state hazardous material team was wrapping up identification, packaging and clean-up work Thursday at a southeast Bend recycling business that unknowingly bought hundreds of unlabeled chemicals someone improperly left stored at a nearby mini-storage business, officials said.
Pakit Liquidators at 903 SE Armour St. contacted authorities when the chemicals, apparently from an old research lab of some sort, were found among items the firm bought when Clark's Storage, a Ninth Street mini-storage business, sold off the items in two storage units whose leases expired due to unpaid rent, said Brian Allen, a hazardous waste compliance inspector with the state Department of Environment Quality in Bend.
"They brought the equipment, books, everything over to their site," Allen said. The Pakit workers began going through the materials on Sunday, March 4 and "noticed they had acquired some chemicals," so they contacted Bend police, who in turn put them in touch with the Oregon Emergency Response System, Allen said.

HERMISTON -- People living in Eastern Oregon and Washington can sleep a little safer now that the Umatilla Chemical Depot officially has been put to rest.
To celebrate the occasion, the Army's chemical materials agency held a celebration Thursday night marking Umatilla's end of an era for storing dangerous chemical agents used in warfare since World War II.
About 300 people attended the event and listened to military and corporate officials pay tribute to the community's support for the depot since 1941.
"This is a historic milestone," said Gary Anderson, project manager for the site. "All the secondary waste has been removed, which brings a preservation of peace to the depot."
The 20,000-acre site eventually will be turned back into public use and hopefully provide some job opportunities, he added.

KENNEBUNK Ñ Cleanup crews are still working today to remove the remains of a chemical explosion that happened Wednesday night at Corning Inc., an industrial products company on Alfred Road in Kennebunk.
Fire Chief Stephen Nichols said that chemicals, including nitric acid, that were mixed in a drum of disposed material gave off hydrogen gas, which is explosive. A spark, possibly from a light or a fan coming on, ignited the vapors and created an explosion around 9:30 p.m., he said.
The explosion caused minor damage to the building but blew materials around inside, he said. The building was evacuated and three people were taken to the hospital complaining of tightness in their throat, he said. They were evaluated and released, he said.
Other parts of the facility, which manufactures specialty glass and ceramic products for the communications and health care industries, remained open.

Stolt Valor is a chemical tanker carrying approximately 13,000 metric tons of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), which is used to increase oxygen content in gasoline throughout the U.S., to reduce carbon monoxide and ozone levels caused by auto emissions. MTBE is considered soluble, but not biodegradable.
Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) Battle Watch Officer reported the incident to the Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Center (MEMAC), which dispatched tugs with fire fighting capability to the scene.
U.S. 5th Fleet's Naval Cooperation and Guidance for Shipping (NCAGS) contacted Stolt-Nielsen Limited to establish a line of communication between the military and the shipping company's crisis response team. The environmental impact is unknown at this time.
Stolt Nielsen issued a statement saying:
"Stolt Tankers B.V., a subsidiary of Stolt-Nielsen Limited and operators and owners of MT Stolt Valor, confirm that the vessel suffered an explosion on board whilst transiting the Persian Gulf.
"A Coalition warship is presently on site and is providing assistance. We understand that 24 of the 25 crewmembers are safe and on board the Coalition vessel. One crewmember is currently missing. Families of all the crew are being contacted as a matter of urgency.
"Stolt is working in close cooperation with the authorities on site in order to establish the whereabouts of our missing seafarer and the condition of the vessel."

AJMAN Ñ Three of the five cleaning and maintenance workers who had been battling for life after inhaling toxic chemical fumes during a fire in an oil tanker at Ajman Port last week have succumbed to the inside burns in a hospital here, taking the death toll in the incident to six.
Three workers had died on the spot in the fire on the Sallalah while five were rushed to Khalifa Hospital. Three of them who had suffered third degree burns died in the last two days.
Salih Al Junaibi, Deputy Director of Khalifa Hospital, said the workers were brought to the hospital in very critical conditions, as they had third degree burns inside due to inhaling fumes from the strong chemical which they used to clean the ship.

WEST POINT, Miss. (WTVA) - Local law enforcement officers and firefighters are taking a class to learn about meth labs.
"It can be very deadly," says Ted Krayer, program coordinator with the Alabama Fire College. "It can be very explosive. It has all the hazards that you can think of with chemicals from corrosive to flammability."
For those attending the two-day seminar, the information will teach them the warning signs that could save a life.
"We're trying to help our firefighters learn more about what to look for and what the hazards are," adds Mark Moss, senior instructor with the state Fire Academy. "[This way,] they don't get contaminated or injured by dealing with any type of lab or activites that they may have."

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. Ñ Los Alamos National Laboratory called out its hazmat and emergency response team Wednesday following a chemical reaction at one of the lab's technical areas.
Lab officials say there was a small chemical reaction in a bottle that contained a sample of liquid that had been drawn from a 60-year-old cylinder. The material flared briefly when exposed to air.
The lab says no one was injured or exposed to any hazardous chemicals.
As a precaution, Los Alamos police temporarily closed the area. One section of road closest to the technical area remained closed Wednesday afternoon.
A lab subcontractor was sampling the old cylinders in a metal enclosure when the incident happened just before noon.
The cylinders were excavated last year from a World War II-era landfill on lab property so that they could be characterized and properly disposed of.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
The city of Jacksonville has condemned a Baymeadows hotel that was the site of a meth lab bust Monday.
Officials said it will be up to the Homestead Studio Suites on Western Way to pay for testing and cleaning by a certified outside company, and it's not clear how long all of that will take.
The company must have licensed environmental hygienists and contractors. Environmental hygienists have to conduct testing of the hotel's interior and determine the effects, if any, of a meth production for the building to be reopened and what, if any, items need to be replaced.
According to Code Enforcement, if any structure is proven to have a meth lab in it, the structure is condemned.

A pharmaceutical company has pleaded guilty to four breaches of health and safety legislation following a chemical explosion at its plant in Cork that claimed the life of one employee and led to serious injury to another.
Corden Pharma Ltd, trading as Corden Pharmachem Ltd with registered offices at South Mall, Cork, pleaded guilty to the four charges relating to the explosion at its plant at Little Island, Co Cork, on April 28th, 2008.
Father-of-one Liam Nodwell (58) from Glanmire on the outskirts of Cork city was fatally injured.
His workmate Jimmy O'Sullivan was seriously injured in the chemical explosion which happened in a process reactor on the 20-acre site.
Yesterday at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, company director Patrick Burke pleaded guilty on behalf of the company to the four breaches of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 when the company was arraigned on the charges.
Corden Pharma Ltd pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the safety and prevention of risk to health at work in that it failed to implement control measures to control an emission from a chemical reaction leading to the death of Mr Nodwell and injury to Mr O'Sullivan.

Hash of all kinds is more popular than ever in Sacramento. But a lot of it is made with butane: Is this safe for patients to consume? Or even make?
On February 7, a woman shattered all the windows in her San Francisco apartment and was sent to the hospital, along with a 12-year-old boy, for treatment of burn wounds. And on February 19, three people in Tracy were rushed to the hospital, critically wounded after an explosion in their apartment. Authorities have said that these explosions resulted from failed attempts to make butane hash oil.
Butane hash oil, often referred to as BHO, is a concentrated form of cannabis prized for its smooth flavor and strong effects. According to Jeff Hatley at Sequoia Analytical Labs in Sacramento, most concentrated forms of cannabis, such as cold water hash or kief, contain between 15 to 60 percent tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the psychoactive chemical in cannabis. But BHO regularly tests much higher, at 30 to 75 percent.

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Missouri Emergency Response Commission, in cooperation with New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control has developed a course called "Chemical Suicide: Information for the Emergency Responder," which will be held March 22 from 6-9 p.m. at the University of Central Missouri's Wood Building, room 100.
Chemical suicide is happening across the U.S. and has already happened in Missouri.
This method of suicide has grown rapidly in Japan since 2007 and experts agree that it will continue to grow here in the U.S. over the next several years. This form of suicide creates some very dangerous hazards for the emergency responder due to the highly toxic gasses that are created.

(TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - An East Texas man is recovering from burns to his face and body after an accidental chemical fire about 8:20 Monday night on County Road 4142.
The victim, whose name was not released, was using methanol in an attempt to rekindle a fire thought to have burned out, Smith County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Tony Dana said.
"(He) had methanol in a bucket and was trying to demonstrate how to light a fire with methanol," Dana said. "He lit it (and) the fire jumped from the bucket and caught himself on fire."

MARTIN COUNTY - Fire crews have contained a huge fire that was burning at a gas plant in Martin County.
The fire started at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the WTG Gas Processing Plant on the Sale Ranch in Martin County.
The gas processing plant had liquid propane on site and that is what officials believe was burning during the fire.
Fire crews sprayed fire retardant material to contain the fire.

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - A tense morning for those shopping at Rocky's Ace Hardware in Middletown on Tuesday.
An employee of the store was unable to shut off the filling valve after filling a tank.
Employees, customers, and nearby residents were evacuated from the area as crews tried to fix the problem.
Firefighters poured water on the leak to control the fumes,
They used the emergency shut off valve to stop the leaking propane.

Kissimmee Fire Department Hazmat Team, in partnership with St. Cloud Fire Rescue, determined the "rotten egg" smell at the CFE Credit Union in St. Cloud to be negative after air samples were taken.
The building, located at 3335 13th Street, was evacuated today after employees noticed the odor in the bank's vault around 8:20 a.m., St. Cloud Fire Rescue Chief Bill Johnston said.
Several employees were sickened by the stench and two employee was transported to St. Cloud Regional Medical Center for treatment, police Sgt. Denise Roberts said in a press release.

BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) _ As many as eight people sought treatment at the hospital and about 90 people were evacuated from a Biddeford YMCA after higher-than-normal levels of chlorine were detected in the pool area.
Authorities say several people went to Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford in ambulances and one person drove to the hospital after the hazardous materials situation just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday. About 20 people were treated at the scene.
Their injuries were not considered life threatening.
Investigators suspect that higher-than-required chlorine levels were pumped into the swimming pool at the Northern York County Family YMCA.
