CHEMICAL WASTE PROFESSIONAL
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The Division of Research Safety (DRS) is seeking a full-time academic professional to join its chemical waste group. The successful candidate will provide professional-level services for the management of chemical waste.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the management of all aspects of waste operations including, but not limited to: collecting and transporting waste, bulking solvents, performing quality assurance and chemical
testing, operating and maintaining waste facility equipment, preparing waste prior to disposal, performing general waste management tasks, and maintaining all necessary documentation.
- Act in a consulting role with campus administrative units, unit safety contacts, campus emergency responders, individual research groups, and individual researchers via telephone, meetings,
and email correspondence.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of all necessary records associated with waste management, facility operations, and the transportation and storage of materials for final disposal
using computerized record systems and standard office programs.
- Participate in the DRS 24-hour emergency response program by providing information and assistance to campus and local emergency response agencies upon request.
- Act as a point of contact with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies to communicate applicable waste information, standards, and regulations to the campus community, and devise
policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
- Develop and provide hazardous waste training to campus in individual, group, and lecture settings. Perform inspections of varied campus work areas, including laboratories where chemical
waste may be produced.
- Participate in the operation of the chemical waste management program at the Special Materials Storage Facility, including supervision of technical and student employees.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Qualified to wear a work uniform; steel toe shoes/boots; eye, face, and hand protection; respiratory protection (negative pressure half-face or full face respirator); and other protective
equipment or clothing as directed.
- Able to transport and manipulate 55-gallon drums of waste weighing up to 500 pounds with the aid of a drum dolly; packages (bags, barrels, boxes) of waste weighing 5-100 pounds; and containers
of chemical waste weighing 5-50 pounds.
- Willing to work in physically strenuous situations, cope with seasonal weather changes, and handle dangerous and hazardous materials.
- A valid driver’s license.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related, OR a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with minimum 3 years hands-on experience working with chemicals or hazardous waste.
- The ability to work as part of a waste team, communicate effectively orally and in writing, and familiarity with word processing and database applications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- An understanding of RCRA regulations, experience working in a chemical research laboratory, and experience in handling hazardous waste.
This is a regular, 100% time academic professional position with University benefits. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The proposed starting date is as soon as possible after the closing date. This is a security–sensitive
