NC State University is the largest and most diverse research institution in the state of North Carolina.
The university is comprised of 2,110 acres on the Raleigh campus, plus over 100,000 acres in research and extension farms and other facilities throughout the state of North Carolina. Its population of 31,100 students and 2,040 faculty include more than 2,500 graduate students supported on research and teaching appointments in the 68 established research and service centers. The 1,334 acre NC State Centennial Campus complex includes a mix of wet lab and office incubator space for startup companies as well as buildings co-inhabited by university departments and industrial tenants. This complex and diverse environment, particularly the heavy concentration of research centers and institutes, provides a challenging and interesting work environment for health and safety professionals.
The primary focus of this position will be to provide safe design and review input for R&D equipment, lead and or participate in process hazard reviews, conduct health and safety audits, provide safety training.
The candidate will need a working knowledge of gas safety practices and hardware in addition to knowledge of mechanical or electrical engineering safety principles as applied to R&D equipment design and construction. Familiarity with NEC and vacuum technology is also desired. The candidate must have the ability to provide guidance to North Carolina State University faculty and staff on safe equipment design and construction practices. Other desired attributes include the ability to communicate effectively with both oral and written correspondence, work cooperatively with other team members, and the desire to perform quality work.
This position will conduct the vast majority of work on the main campus located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Infrequent visits may be conducted to North Carolina State University property located throughout the state of North Carolina.
This position requires an experienced equipment safety engineer who possesses an understanding of concepts, practices, and theories utilized in both mechanical and electrical engineering along with a demonstrated ability to use them in practice as it pertains to the safe design and construction of R&D equipment involving chemical and physical hazards. The successful candidate will be capable of functioning effectively on matters of process hazard reviews, health and safety audits, and guidance on safe equipment construction and component selection with minimal supervision. A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal correspondence is required.
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in engineering relevant to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of education and experience in mechanical or electrical engineering, safety engineering, physical science, or electronics technician with extensive experience as a tool or process technician or engineer in complex pharmaceutical or semiconductor facilities where equipment design / construction and process safety experience has been obtained. Experience with compressed gas safety, vacuum technology, and non-ionizing radiation is preferred.
C. Work Schedule
8:00 A.M. - 5 P.M. Monday through Friday
This position reports to the Manager, Occupational Safety within the Environmental Health and Safety Center at North Carolina State University.
