CHEMICAL SPILL CLEARS HOSPITAL LAB

Sixty people were evacuated from a major hospital in Melbourne's north-east as firefighters struggled to contain a chemical spill.
Workers on the entire sixth floor of the Harold Stokes building at the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg were forced to leave the premises about 9.30am in the wake of a formaldehyde leak in a pathology lab.
Formaldehyde is a pungent-smelling and highly toxic gas that can cause death if inhaled in large quantities.

Hospital spokeswoman Taryn Sheehy said that no one was injured and no patients were affected by the fumes. "It wasn't a serious breach ... essentially it's an incident we have dealt with," Ms Sheehy said.

METH LAB FOUND IN OBX MOTEL

DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - Deputies on the Outer Banks have made another meth lab related arrest at a motel.
The Dare County Sheriff's Office raided the unidentified motel room in Manteo on Feb. 15. Chief Deputy Steve Hoggard said deputies found a man trying to manufacture methamphetamine in the room.
Deputies said 31-year-old David Blouir was mixing ingredients in a container to get high. The method of manufacturing meth is known as "one pot" or "shake and bake."

DOW AGREES TO CLEAN DIOXIN-TAINTED PROPERTIES

Michigan environmental regulators said Thursday that they reached a long-sought deal with Dow Chemical Co. to clean up to 1,400 residential properties in Midland, home of its corporate headquarters and a plant that polluted the area with dioxin for much of the past century.
The state Department of Environmental Quality said it agreed with the company on the outlines of a cleanup plan, marking a milestone in on-and-off negotiations that began in the mid-1990s. Dow will cover all of the costs and will fill in the plan details and submit them for review next month.
The total cost of the plan won't be clear until it's known how many of the 1,400 properties require cleaning and how much work needs to be done, Dow and DEQ officials said. The company said it would offer to buy about 50 homes and lots in two areas close to the plant.

DALTON, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a FedEx semitrailer hauling chemicals containing formaldehyde overturned on an interstate near the Georgia-Tennessee line, forcing the highway to close for a time as crews cleaned up the chemical mess.
Sgt. John Burnette of the Georgia State Patrol says the truck, which was hauling two trailers, hit a guardrail and overturned around 5 a.m. Thursday. The wreck happened on Interstate 75 about 30 miles south of Chattanooga.
Burnette says hundreds of small bottles of sterilization fluid, each containing a small amount of formaldehyde, spilled from the truck.

WHITEHALL DENTAL OFFICE EVACUATED BECAUSE OF CHEMICAL SPILL

A chemical used during root canals spilled in the cupboard of a Whitehall Township dental office Thursday morning, forcing the evacuation of about a half-dozen people, fire officials said.
A female employee was overcome by the toxic fumes, but was treated at the scene and released, according to fire chief Robert Benner. About six other people in the Dental Dreams, most of them employees, were evacuated around 11 a.m, he said.
The chemical was neutralized and disposed of properly, along with the cupboard.

The chemical, formocresol, is used during root canal treatment and contains formaldehyde and glycerin.

MARINE DRIVE OPEN AGAIN AFTER CHEMICAL SPILL

POLICE and fire crews have reopened West Vancouver's Marine Drive following the clean up of a chemical spill that closed parts of the thoroughfare for several hours Thursday.
The mishap took place shortly after 9 a.m. when a 45-gallon drum filled with a component of insulating foam tipped over inside a cube van as the vehicle headed up 31st Street.
Police cordoned off the area, and a special hazmat team from the City of North Vancouver fire department was called in to help with the clean up. The chemical was soaked up with sand, which was then removed with a municipal street sweeper, said West Vancouver assistant Fire Chief Martin Ernst.

NANOMATERIAL DUST IS MORE EXPLOSION-PRONE THAT NORMAL DUST (WIRED UK)

hese sorts of explosions have been recorded since 1785, so we now know quite a bit about the combustible properties of dust. But dust, according to the US National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is defined as a finely divided solid with a diameter of less than 420 ?m -- those are micrometres. With the rise of nanomaterials, there's a new type of dust on the scene -- and it's measured in the nanometre range.
Researchers from Dalhousie University in Halifax, in an study for the American Chemical Society's journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, probed these smaller "nontraditional" dusts to see how they compare to old fashioned wheat and sugar.
They found that the energy needed to ignite nanomaterials made of metals, such as aluminium, is less than 1 mJ -- that's less than 1/30th the amount of energy you'd need to make sugar dust explode, or less than 1/60th of the energy required to set wheat dust aflame.
"These low ignition energies may therefore allow nanomaterials to ignite due to electrostatic sparks, collision, or mechanical friction," the researchers write.

ONE WORKER INJURED IN CHEMICAL EXPLOSION AT MERCER MILLING IN CLAY

Clay, NY -- A chemical accident was reported today at a milling plant in the town of Clay.
The explosion was reported about 11:30 a.m. at Mercer Milling, 4698 Crossroads Park. Mercer Milling makes vitamin and mineral premixes for farm animals and pets.
Stephan Cert suffered a minor injury, Jeff Matuszczak, assistant general manager
of the company, said this afternoon. Cert was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, where he was treated and released, Matuszczak said. Cert has returned to work, he said.
Matuszczak said Cert was injured in a minor chemical reaction at the plant.
"It's something we handle on a routine basis," Matuszczak said. The plant will be down for couple of hours, he said.
There was no smoke or fire visible when firefighters arrived, Moyers Corners Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Zaferakis said. "However, we did have a dust in the air."
Plant workers told the chief that a sulfur product was being mixed at the time of the reported blast. County fire investigators were on the scene to determine whether there was an explosion or fire, Zaferakis said.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) Ñ There was a massive Hazmat spill on I-95 and 895 in northeast Baltimore. Right now, both of those roadways are completely shut down. Kai Jackson has more.
A Hazmat crew, Baltimore City police, the Department of the Environment, MdTA officials and Baltimore City firefighters are on the scene for an overturned tanker truck that spilled an unknown amount of non-toxic ink, later identified as printer ink. It happened at the Fort McHenry toll plaza around 9 p.m. Wednesday. Even though the ink is water-based, it's still considered a Hazmat situation.

SWELLING POP BOTTLE PROMPTS HAZMAT RESPONSE AT SALEM SCHOOL

SALEM, Ore. - A one-liter pop bottle that turned up following a police chase at an elementary school caused a bit of a stir on Wednesday.
The incident happened around 1:40 p.m. at Mary Eyre Elementary School at 4868 Buffalo Drive S.E.
Earlier in the day, police had been involved in a vehicle pursuit where the suspect fled on foot and ran across the school's property. Officers apprehended the person, cleared the area and activities at the school returned to normal.
A student later found a one-liter pop bottle on the grounds and gave it to a teacher, who then gave it to the janitorial staff. The bottle ended up in a trash dumpster but concerns were raised when it began to swell. The bottle had some type of liquid in it and was sealed with a cap.
Firefighters and a HAZMAT team then responded to the school to check it out. They later rendered it safe and collected the liquid contents for testing. It is unknown at this point what exactly was in the bottle.
Police also do not know if the suspect who ran from them dropped the bottle during the chase or if it ended up on the school grounds some other way.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Hazmat crews are at the scene of a carbon dioxide leak in downtown Oklahoma City.
The CO2 leak is coming from a truck near the Coca-Cola plant at 227 N. Quapah Ave. and creating a vapor cloud.
The driver of the truck is experiencing breathing problems, and paramedics have been called to the scene.

Fire officials said a chemical leak alarm at the Marlborough Hospital forced firefighters to cordon off a portion of the hospital this morning, although hospital officials say no chemicals actually escpaed.
According to the Marlborough Fire Department, firefighters went to the hospital's laboratory/central sterile supply area at 6:03 a.m. for an ethylene oxide alarm. Ethylene oxide is a flammable gas.
A small portion of the hospital was cordoned off, and a hazardous materials response team from the Department of Fire Services assisted the Marlborough Fire Department.
Melissa Hodgson, a Marlborough Hospital spokeswoman, said yesterday that no gas had actually escaped and that a sensor in the area had faulted, triggering the alarm.

Flames ripped through the building, located near Edwardsburg High School, on Section and Max Streets, around 2 a.m.
Crews had the fire under control within forty-five minutes, but thick plumes of smoke could be seen pouring out of the building for nearly two hours as firefighters worked on hot spots.
Edwardsburg Fire Chief Bruce Stack said bins with fertilizer byproduct were inside of the building, so they were concerned about breathing in the smoke.
There was no concern, however, about an explosion due to the chemicals.
"We try to stay out of the smoke as much as we can. It's a neutral chemical in there right now, lime and hot ash, so we don't have an explosive factor in any of it," said Stack.
No one was hurt but Stack said a firefighter was treated at the scene for minor heat exhaustion.

LARGE FIRE SEEN FOR MILES DESTROYS BUILDING

MCMINNVILLE -- A spectacular fire that could be seen for miles hit a rural construction building in Yamhill County early Wednesday morning.
The alarm came in just after midnight south of McMinnville to 9005 SW Trestle View Lane.
With propane tanks exploding, arriving firefighters at first could not approach the building, said McMinnville Assistant Fire Chief Larry Tidings. Water was sprayed on surrounding structures and vegetation to keep the fire from spreading.
The building had several vehicles parked inside, including RVs, a fifth-wheel trailer and work trucks, he said.
