I would recommend that you check with the ACS "bible" for student labs, Safety in Academic Laboratories. There are 2 sections, one for students and one for faculty/administrators, and you can find them on the Committee on Chemical Safety website.


That said, students should not be working alone at any time. Our policy is that they may not even be working with a partner in the lab unless a faculty member is present or at least in a neighboring room. If they are only doing computer work, that's not a problem, but if that computer is in a lab setting we still limit their access.
