The Thursday morning incident at the former Varnell Plating company prompted firefighters to evacuate neighboring business on Franklin Drive. The site was in the midst of being cleaned as a result of an EPA-ordered mandate. (KGO) -- The smell that has upset neighbors living downwind from a pipeline rupture at a former naval weapons station in Concord may last for days. Hazmat teams spent part of Tuesday testing the air. By Tuesday afternoon, the smell had drastically improved and officials insist that even at its worst, the air was still safe to breathe. Still, at least one family, with a 2-week-old baby decided to stay in a hotel room Monday night, just in case. Officials said there were no injuries at the facility when flames erupted from a large metal trash bin holding oily filters from inside the plant. „We had a dumpster fire on the exterior of the building,‰ said Capt. NSW Fire and Rescue said the gas was released in three blasts at 3.30pm. Six fire units and Hazmat are on the scene. No one has been injured or evacuated. A spokesman for Fire and Rescue NSW said no chemicals had yet been detected by air quality monitors, while an Orica spokeswoman said the company was investigating the incident. Earlier, the Environment Protection Authority announced that Orica would be prosecuted after hexavalent chromium belched into the air from the company's ammonium nitrate plant at Kooragang Island, near Newcastle, on August 8. --------------------------------------------- INDICTMENT: AURORA DRY CLEANERS DUMPED CHEMICALS ON DENVER STREET http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_19281921 Tags: us_CO, transportation, release, environmental, cleaners, waste, follow-up The owners of Continental Fabric Care abandoned a tractor-trailer containing drums of dangerous chemicals on a Denver street, according to an indictment. The company, and June Ho Choi, 60, and Hyun S. Pak, 63, never obtained a permit to dispose of or store the dry cleaning chemicals, according to the 5-page indictment, filed in Denver District Court. The indictment also alleges that the pair lied to the EPA about the matter. Neither could be reached for comment. On June 12 last year, Denver Fire Lt. Jeff Fletcher contacted a Colorado Attorney General's Office investigator after employees of a business in the 3700 block of Nome Street noticed chemical odors coming from the abandoned semi, according to the indictment. At about the same time, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment learned details about the hazardous waste in the trailer, which was parked on the street for three days. --------------------------------------------- HAZMAT RESPONDS TO HIALEAH SCHOOL AFTER STUDENTS COMPLAIN OF BURNING SENSATION IN EYES http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/133359083.html Tags: us_FL, education, release, injury, pepper_spray Fire Rescue workers responded to a Hialeah school Monday after several students began complaining about a burning sensation in their eyes, officials said. About 20 kids at Jose Marti Middle School at 5701 Northwest 24th Avenue were affected around 9 a.m., according to Hialeah Fire Rescue spokesman Cesar Espinosa. A command post was set up to treat the children and a Hazmat unit was brought in to determine the cause, Espinosa said. Officials said 20 children were taken to Palmetto General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. More were treated at the scene. It's believed the situation was caused by someone spraying pepper spray in a stairwell, but the cause is still being investigated, officials said. One train was loose on the tracks after a cable snapped. It crashed into an idle train, puncturing a car filled with 30,000 gallons of ethanol. Dozens of emergency vehicles responded by using dams and foam to keep the leak for reaching the river. Fire Department spokesman, Lt. Larry Stoney said fire crews responded to a chemical hazard call just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Tour Ice plant, 645 N. Beach St. As they arrived firefighters noticed a white vapor coming from the service entrance, Stoney said. Plant employees told emergency crews an 8-foot-high, 600-pound anhydrous ammonia tank used for making ice was leaking. Fire crews entered the building and closed several tank valves to prevent further leaks. The incident occurred at Colours Udyog, a medium-sized unit.In the fire, one worker sustained serious burns while another sustained minor burns. In a serious lapse, at least half an hour elapsed before the injured men were taken to the hospital by the fire brigade. The incident happened at about 2 pm when an employee named Ramesh was working on the chemical reactor. It exploded and Ramesh was engulfed in flames. No officers were present at the factory and it was after sometime that the fire brigade was informed and rushed to the unit. Aside from controlling the blaze, the firemen took the injured to the Panchkula Civil Hospital. Local MLA, D.K. Bansal also arrived at the scene. He said that from the look of the factory a serious blast had occurred. Authorities said the storage building held lumber and more than 20 propane tanks, all of which exploded. Damscus Fire Chief John Bricker says an oil well exploded on West Middletown Road around 7:30 a.m. between Diagonal and Seacrest Road. The explosion shook nearby homes and caused a fire that took about 20 minutes to put out. Firefighters had to use foam and water to cool the well. Fire Marshal Ricky Shores said there are no reported injuries or reports of other buildings being damaged. The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that the mill went up in flames late Saturday. Firefighters circled the structure to save adjacent businesses and locomotives in the rail yard behind the old mill. The fire was fueled by still-pressured gas cylinders stored in the building. The newspaper said an Albany, Georgia, developer owned the old mill and was preparing a renovation to convert it into lofts and retail businesses. With flames shooting more than four stories high during the fire, authorities said embers soared overhead and raised the risk of starting fires elsewhere. Jeff Meyer, chief of Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said the embers can travel for miles. ---------------------------------------------
