Hi Angelo:
Here are a few excerpts from NFPA that should help:
NFPA 70, Article 210 requires GFCIs in these locations (I left
out items (1)-(4) as they are not applicable to labs):
(5) Sinks — where receptacles are
installed within 1.8 m
(6 ft) of the outside edge of the sink.
Exception No. 1 to (5): In industrial
laboratories, receptacles
used to supply equipment where removal of
power
would introduce a greater hazard shall be
permitted to be
installed without GFCI protection.
Exception No. 2 to (5): For receptacles
located in patient
bed locations of general care or critical
care areas of
health care facilities other than those
covered under
210.8(B)(1), GFCI protection shall not be
required.
(6) Indoor wet locations
(7) Locker rooms with associated showering
facilities
(8) Garages, service bays, and similar areas
where electrical
diagnostic equipment, electrical hand tools,
or portable
lighting
equipment are to be used
NFPA 45 has the following regarding fume hood electrical
devices:
8.8.4* Electrical Devices.
8.8.4.1 In
installations where services and controls are within
the hood, additional electrical
disconnects shall be located
within 15m(50 ft) of the hood and
shall be accessible and clearly
marked.
8.8.4.2 If
electrical receptacles are located external to the
hood, no additional electrical
disconnect shall be required.
(See
5.6.1.)

Subject: [DCHAS-L] GFCI's and requirements for locating near safety
showers, and/or Sinks. . .
All,
(Please forgive
me if this is a repeat question. . .)
I am sending a
request to the group for assistance in locating any U.S. regulations,
design standards, codes with regard to providing Ground Fault Circuit
Interuptor (GFCI) protection (in Laboratories) for electrical outlets
located within the vicinity of eyewashes, and/or sinks. Additionally, are
laboratory fume hoods (with water and drains supplied) provided with such
protection (in addition to emergency power shut-off switches).
I would
appreciate hearing from this group's experience.
Any history,
background or references would be much appreciated. Please reply directly
to chinniat**At_Symbol_Here**lilly.com
Thanks.
Angelo
