I attended Jay's memorial service this morning to represent ACS, CHAS & CCS. I spent some time with Cecelia, Jay's daughter, who told me that his ahah moment, after his "neurological incident" several months ago, was the sudden realization that he could no longer "learn". I'm sure, knowing Jay for the past 30 years (though many of you knew him even longer), that nothing could have depressed him more or sped his way along faster than not being able to use that wonderful brain to reason, and to verbally batter those who refused to do so.
As you might expect for someone with 19 children, the Young family was somewhat overwhelming in number. Theymade me feel welcome, though, as you might expect.
Cecelia suggested to me that hermother (Mariann) might appreciate an invitation to Jay's memorial symposiumto San Diego. I will work with Neal to see that we can make that happen.

I had the joy and honor of working with Jay for many years on CCS,
writing manuals, listening to his stories, and learning more from him
than from any other chemist I can think of. I feel sorry for the Lord
above if there is anything amiss in the world of safety there! Please
give my best to his family.

Thanks for letting us know, Neal.
I met Jay at a crossroads in my career. It was in the early 80’s andI was starting to dabble in lab safety when my boss was hosting Jay for a chemistry event In Montreal and invited me to join them for lunch. Jay really encouraged me to forge ahead and it is not long after that I went back to school to study industrial hygiene and committed my career to the cause on afull-time basis.
The fundamentals of lab safety that I learned from Jay Young and the many references he published really helped build the foundation of my own professional practice. I am sure many others can say the same. If it is true that teaching is the key to immortality then Jay’s impact will indeed be everlasting…
