"It's a mess," said Mike McComber, owner of the Indian Valley Inn, a restaurant-bar where many town residents were taking refuge. "A quarter to a half mile of cars derailed. Many of them are on fire. "Everytime one of them explodes, it sounds like a bomb is going off. Three have gone off so far." At least six cars on the 112-car train were burning, and officials were worried about expanding liquid vapor explosions, said Capt. Steve Haywood of the Ottawa Fire Department. The fire still had not been brought under control by 5:15 a.m. and it probably would be permitted to burn out on its own he said. Birmingham Fire Chief Mike Metz says a construction crew was working on a sewer outside Seaholm High School on Thursday afternoon, and the building's ventilation system sucked in some of the odor. Metz says the students and the teacher complained of feeling nauseous. Metz says the crew was working for Oakland County relining sewers, and the smell came from a resin they were using. The tractor was properly marked with a "slow-moving vehicle" reflector and was traveling 15-18 mph. A car driven by 35-year-old Babetta R. A report by former bureaucrat Brendan O'Reilly into the Orica leak in August was released yesterday along with the new measures, which also include an industry-funded environmental monitoring network in the Lower Hunter and a strengthening of procedures for public notification. Spokesman Paul Corah told KATU News four workers reported the injuries after opening an envelope just after 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. Those workers were isolated, and the building's ventilation system was shut down. Initially, Portland Fire and Rescue said the envelope contained a white powdery substance. But Mike McAleer, spokesman for Veterans Hospital, said it was his understanding it was not white powder. The workers suffered from burns on their faces, mouths, eyes and hands, according to firefighters. McAleer said the employees were treated with soap and water, which was enough to alleviate the pain. In addition to the four workers, two members of the security team, who reported similar injuries when they checked on the situation, were also isolated, Corah said. In total, McAleer said five to eight employees were affected. He also said no patients were at risk. Jason Sanchez pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of governmental administration in Bethlehem Town Court. He will pay a $200 fine and serve no jail time. Sanchez originally was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, a felony, in addition to obstruction of governmental administration and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors. If found guilty on all three charges, Sanchez could have faced a maximum of nine years in prison. The obstruction of governmental administration charge carried a maximum of one year in jail. Police responded at about 10:30 a.m. to a suspicious object found about 50 feet behind Christian Faith Academy, at 115 E. Corcorran Dr., near Boyd Park. A city of Farmington employee reported the object to police. Farmington Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team investigated the object. Inside a gallon container was a substance with a pH of 13 and there was white powdery residue on the outside of the container, said Troy Brown, a battalion chief with the fire department. After a brief investigation by the Hackettstown police, Hackettstown Fire Department and the Warren County Hazardous Materials Team, it was determined the smelly culprit was a leaking bottle of hydrochloric acid in one of the science room's supply cabinets. Authorities removed the bottle and cleaned up the residue from the highly corrosive acid, police said. Hazardous materials technicians separated the contents of the lab, which had been left in a red backpack next door to The Home Place, and neutralized the chemicals. Police officials confirmed the contents of the bag were in fact used to manufacture methamphetamine, but would not release any other details of the investigation because it is ongoing. More details are expected sometime Wednesday. Pittsburg Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Radell said a man had approached several of his firefighters while they were stopped at an intersection and told them about the suspect bag. The firefighters then notified Pittsburg Police. Witnesses said the backpack had been sitting on the sidewalk since Tuesday morning and appeared benign, and that they were surprised when an officer began putting on a hazmat suit to explore the contents. ---------------------------------------------
