The recipient of the 2011 NIOSH/CHAS award for excellence in collegiate chemical safety programs, the University of California – San Diego, gave a presentation in Denver this week which speaks directly to the question raised in this post.

Their presentation will be on the CHAS website soon.  Please refer to it for real, practical guidance on handling a student with a special need, which this is.  This post clearly demonstrates that a special need is not necessarily a physical disability.

To resolve this need; think about the concept – controlling loose stuff that could cause a problem – solution, use acceptable methods to tighten up the clothing and a lab coat over that.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Burka and safety

Could others tell me how you deal with a student who wears a Burka taking an organic chemistry class, or any lab class for that matter?  We certainly don’t want to discriminate religiously, so how do we deal with the safety issues of that.  Surprisingly this is the first time this situation has arisen for us.

Thanks,

MaryAnn
