The Most Exciting Chemistry is Happening in Denver
In less than a week, attendees will gather in Denver for five days for the 242nd ACS National Meeting. Attendees can expect exceptional presentations, exciting social events and numerous networking opportunities. With nearly 100 concurrent sessions occurring at the peak of the meeting and a host of other activities-it is obvious that the latest developments in chemistry are happening in Denver. Theme-Related Symposia:
With its title of Chemistry of Air, Space and Water, the theme for the 242nd ACS National Meeting covers a lot of territory. Thematic Program Chair Ronald C. Cohen (Professor, UC Berkeley Department of Earth & Planetary Science and Director, Berkeley Atmospheric Science Center) has organized foundation symposia related to the theme as well as symposia within the technical divisionÕs programs.
* "Chemistry as a Tool for Space Exploration and Discovery at Mars" and "Exploring Planet Interiors: Experimental & Theoretical" will discuss the chemistry and physical properties of planets and other objects in our solar system.
* "Nitrogen and the Human Endeavor: Chemistry, Effects, and Solutions" will incorporate air and water and the role of Nitrogen in climate change.
* "Atmospheric Aerosols: Chemistry, Clouds, and Climate"will highlight recent advances in understanding the connections between the composition and chemical transformations of atmospheric particles and their direct and indirect effects on climate

Plenary Session
The Plenary Session will underscore the thematic program with lectures on complexity and climate change, sustainable earth chemistry, and the high-pressure/high-temperature chemistry occurring on planetary objects. The session will be held on Sunday, August 28 at 4:00 p.m. in the Colorado Convention Center, Room 601/603.
The Kavli Foundation Innovations in Chemistry Lecture
The Kavli lecture will tie all of the Denver theme topics together. Dr. Susan Solomon (University of Colorado, Boulder) will speak on "The Enduring Challenges of Ozone Depletion and Climate Change: How Planetary Chemistry Is Changing Science and Society" on Monday, August 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the Colorado Convention Center, Wells Fargo Theatre 2. Dr. Solomon led the 1986 NOAA Expedition to the South Pole in the discovery that CFCs were responsible for the Ozone Hole. Scientific innovators will not want to miss this lecture!

Denver Fun Facts
* Denver is one of the few cities in history that was not built on a road, railroad, lake, navigable river or body of water when it was founded. It just happened to be where the first few flakes of gold were found in 1858.
* The mountainous area of Colorado is six times the size of Switzerland, containing 9,600 miles (15,449 km) of fishing streams, 2,850 lakes, and more than 1,000 peaks two miles (3,218 km) high.
* Denver isnÕt just called the Mile-High City, it truly is a mile high. The 13th step on the west side of the State Capitol building is 5,280 feet (1,609 m) above sea level.
