According to the Eastlake Fire Department, a chemical reaction from batteries caused a small explosion and small fire at the factory, which recycles old computers, computer parts and batteries. =93The cause dealt with lithium batteries, and those are air- and water-reactive, so we think somehow they were exposed to air, which created a very small fire. However, it generated a lot of smoke,=94 Fire Chief Ted Whittington said. Several employees received minor injuries, but were not taken to a hospital. --------------------------------------------- CHEMICAL BOMB BURNS POSTAL WORKER FROM SAYLORSBURG http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20110810/NEWS/108 100327/-1/NEWSMAP Tags: us_PA, public, explosion, injury, bomb Eleven-year postal veteran Patricia Matolyak of Saylorsburg suffered burns last week after an exploded chemical bomb splashed her as she opened a mailbox. Matolyak, a carrier out of the Wind Gap office, was driving her regular route at about 10 a.m. when she arrived at a residence in the 300 block of Sexton Road in Bushkill Township, Northampton County, on Thursday. The home had a medium-sized post-mounted black mailbox. She had a bundled stack of mail in her hand. The lid stuck when she tried opening the box. "That happens sometimes because mailboxes get sticky," she said. "I pulled on it pretty hard. When I did, the liquid splashed out on my hands, arms, face, chest and head." At first Matolyak thought the liquid was water. "My gut reaction was to close the mailbox, but when I did, it came back open and all the liquid came into the lid of the mailbox and started bubbling." Inside the mailbox was a 16.9-ounce water bottle, foil and the liquid, which was suspected to be drain cleaner. The bomb had exploded earlier, and the liquid was pooled in the box and came out when the door was opened. ---------------------------------------------
