Descr iption
In collaboration with th e Biosafety Officer, the Associate Biosafety Officer (ABSO) will manage fun ctions supporting the Cornell University Biosafety program for the Ithaca c ampus and outlying facilities, except for the Weill Medical College & Q atar. The overall goals are to prevent and reduce the incidence and s everity of diseases and injuries associated with the possession and use of biohazardous agents in scientific research and education and to assist the Cornell community in achieving compliance with applicable laws, regulations , standards, guidelines and best professional practices. The ABSO wil l conduct risk assessment on behalf of the University, identify potential h azards and degree of risk, provide recommendations for solution, and lead a nd implement actions to limit/eliminate liability and safety concerns for t he University. The Associate Biosafety Officer provides leadership and expe rtise in the area of biological safety to Cornell University supporting and advancing research and the safety of our community.
< p class=text2 style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt'> p>The Associate Biosafe ty Officer will be responsible for developing and overseeing programs, proc edures, and policies including:
· Biosafety management of assigned programs, including but not limited to :
o span>Program development and implementation for highly sensitive bio safety research protocols and projects.
< ![if !supportLists]>o Comprehensive biosafety risk assessments and evaluations of biomaterial research and animal protocols a nd animal use areas
o & nbsp; Accidents, injuries, illnesses and exposure inve stigations
o IBC and IACUC committee work
o Education and trainin g programs
·   ; Serving as the Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) for future Select Agent program
· Providing emergency response for biosafety incidents
· Collaborating with the research compliance organizati on and PI's
· Participating in various ca mpus health and safety committees
· Facil itating compliance with regulatory and best practice requirements as contai ned in laws, regulations, guidelines and standards

Master's degree in microbiology, public health, biological s
cience, veterinary sciences, industrial hygiene or other related field with
at least 3 years of related work experience and/or equivalent combination
of education and experience required. Position requires a proven work
ing knowledge of a wide range of health and safety regulations. Candi
date must have knowledge of biosafety principles, policies and procedures i
ncluding NIH and CDC guidelines and have provided biosafety support to an I
BC or IACUC committee. Experience working directly with external agen
cies. Eligibility for certification or registration as a Biosafety Pr
ofessional by the American Biological Safety Association. Knowledge o
f laboratory equipment, such as biosafety cabinets, centrifuges, and autocl
aves. Must meet current requirements of federal, state and local regulation
s required to carry out the duties of this position such as achieving secur
ity clearances, e.g. US Patriot Act as required by Select Agents and Toxins
regulations. Specialized knowledge and skills applicable to the state of t
he art research such as recombinant DNA techniques, infectious agents, and
biological toxins. Must be skilled in reviewing laboratory research protoco
ls. Demonstrated skills in communicating safety laws, regulations and
best practices through presentation of training courses, etc. Effect
ive leadership and interpersonal skills to effectively lead and mentor coll
eagues. Requires use of good judgment in sensitive situations with employee
s at all levels within the University community. Demonstrated use of
Microsoft Suite products, to complete work, Word, Excel and Power Point, et
c. Ability to gather and analyze information to solve problems and pr
oven ability to organize material and information in a systematic way.
Prove n track record of meeting competing deadlines and within budget. Abil ity to work in a diverse culture.
Must have a valid NYS Driver's lice nse and a good driving record, and must successfully pass a required backgr ound check. Ability to pass a pre-employment physical for the use of respiratory protection equipment and for hazardous materials emergency resp onder work.
