The father of two suffered severe burns when his alleged clandestine
drug lab exploded in the backyard of his Kemps Creek property in
Sydney's southwest last year.

The aluminium shed used to make pseudoephedrine - a precursor chemical
used to make illicit drugs - burst into flames shortly after midnight on
October 10, police claim.

Dagger, 31, and a 23-year-old man both suffered burns. The 23-year-old
man later died from his injuries.

Dagger has spent months recovering in hospital. This week, he was well
enough to be arrested and charged.

LEAK FROM 'DRUG LAB' FORCES EVACUATION,
http://www.theprovince.com/news/Leak+from+drug+forces+evacuation/4688477/s
tory.html

Twenty people were evacuated from their homes in North Surrey Wednesday
after firefighters responded to a suspicious house fire only to find
chemicals giving off gas from a suspected drug lab.

When police and firefighters arrived on the scene in the 13400-block
111A Avenue at about 10: 30 a.m., white smoke was billowing from the
house, but a man greeted them saying nothing was wrong, RCMP Cpl. Drew
Grainger said.

"Clearly, there was something to worry about because the house that he
was standing in front of appeared to be on fire," Grainger said.

When firefighters entered the home, they didn't find a fire, but instead
found "suspicious chemicals consistent with a clandestine drug lab," he
said.

CREWS STOP INSECTICIDE FROM REACHING STORM DRAIN - KSL.COM,
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=15314346

SALT LAKE CITY =97 Hazmat crews responded to a chemical spill on
Yalecrest Avenue (1080 South) Wednesday morning. Around 8:30 a.m.,
neighbors noticed a chemical flowing down the gutter and called 911.

Hazmat crews showed up and found it was an insecticide. A pesticide
company was in the area spraying a yard to kill bugs, but a hose
ruptured on the truck and about 40 to 50 gallons of chemicals spilled
into the gutter and started heading down the street.

=93The crew quickly followed the leak down the gutter, found it, was
able to stop it literally just a foot or two away from where it was
going to get into a storm drain and get into the waterways up here,
which have had plenty of problems with the oil leaks in the past,=94
said Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Mark Bednarik.

http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9MRBAB00.htm

Three refineries, including a BP unit where a 2005 explosion killed 15
people, and a Dow Chemical plant lost electricity in outages that led to
shelter-in-place emergency alerts and the cancellation of public schools
Tuesday in Texas City.

The source of the power outages was still being sought, emergency
officials said.

A second shelter-in-place alert, advising residents to stay indoors, was
issued around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday after a Valero refinery also lost power,
Texas City Homeland Security coordinator Bruce Clawson said.

A BP refinery, site of the deadly March 2005 accident that also left 170
people hurt, and the Dow Chemical plant lost power around 11 p.m.
Monday. The initial shelter-in-place order took effect after those two
outages, but was lifted around 3 a.m. Tuesday, Clawson said.

BOROUGH DEALS WITH OIL SPILL - NORTHJERSEY.COM,
http://www.northjersey.com/community/120841404_Borough_deals_with_an_oil_s
pill_on_East_Pleasant_Ave_.html

HazMat and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP)
helped to clean up an oil spill in Maywood from April 15 to 18.

Oil spilled from an abandoned tank in a parking lot behind businesses on
East Pleasant Avenue. The tank had the capacity for 1,000 gallons of oil
but was not very full.

Borough Administrator Tom Richards said that a sump pump that was either
blocked or broken was not pumping water in the storm sewer line but into
the ground. In the heavy rains, the ground became so saturated with
water that the tank pushed up out of the ground. The cap was off in the
parking lot and water got into the tank.

FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO HAZMAT FIRE | KING5.COM | YOUR NEWS - PHOTOS -
VIDEO - STORIES, http://www.king5.com/your-news/120741964.html

(Poulsbo, North Kitsap) Poulsbo Fire Department and Navy Region
Northwest responded to a dumpster fire this morning at 11am. The
dumpster, which contained titanium shavings, was located at the Twelve
Trees business park, on Pioneer Way just off Highway 3. Hazmat crews
chose to allow the fire to burn itself out, as water or foam could make
the fire worse. Firefighters cooled the nearby structure and the outside
of the dumpster with water to prevent more ignitions.
Battalion Chief Chris Morrison said, =93Our main concern with this type
of fire is to keep the area clear of bystanders, as the fumes can be
hazardous to your health. There was also some concern about an
underground gas line that led to nearby propane tanks, and there were
barrels that contained oil products in close proximity. We wanted to
ensure the fire didn=92t get too hot and spread to the nearby building.=94
The business uses titanium to make prosthetic limbs and the business
manager said an employee was attempting to weld a crack in the dumpster
when the contents ignited. There were no injuries from the fire
extinguished itself in just under 3 hours.

HAZMAT INVESTIGATES GASOLINE DUMPED IN SEWER SYSTEM - SAN DIEGO,
CALIFORNIA TALK RADIO STATION - 760 KFMB AM - 760KFMB,
http://www.760kfmb.com/story/14521160/hazmat-investigates-gasoline-dumped-
in-storm-drain

COLLEGE AREA (CBS 8) - Hazmat crews are investigating how gasoline ended
up pouring into the sewer system in the 4800 block of Campanile Dr.,
near San Diego State.

Authorities suspect that someone dumped an unknown quantity of gas into
the sewer system, possibly by dumping it down a drain.

The gas vapors then rose from the sewer system below to the manhole
covers above it, releasing an intense odor of gasoline that residents
thought was a gas leak.

HAZMAT SCARE SHAKES UP TRENTON WATER FILTRATION PLANT - TRENTONIAN.COM,
http://www.trentonian.com/articles/2011/04/26/news/doc4db7a2bb3e5305486431
48.txt

TRENTON =97 The city fire department=92s Hazmat Task Force determined
that a feared spill of hazardous materials inside the Trenton Water
Filtration Plant yesterday was actually that of potassium permanganate,
used to disinfect and deodorize Delaware River water that becomes our
drinking water.

The incident occurred at 1 p.m.

=93The DPW located a piece of pipe in the potassium permanganate
system,=94 said Ralph Burzachiello, the city=92s acting director of
Public Works, in a press release. =93The situation was isolated and
contained in the containment system. It did not flow to any other area
of the plant or interfere with any operation of the plant.=94

He could not be reached later for further explanations. But Trenton Fire
Captain Rich Seeds said the Hazmat team identified potassium
permanganate as the chemical, then turned the problem over to a hired
cleanup company and the plant superintendent, Bill Mitchell.
