A
tractor-trailer carrying old batteries flipped over Thursday night and
damaged its fuel tanks, spilling diesel onto the Southeast Loop 410
off-ramp to Interstate 37 South.
No
injuries were reported. Speed might have been a factor, although police
were still investigating the cause of
the accident.
Firefighters rushed to the scene after the 18-wheeler
rolled over around 8:30 p.m. Personnel shovelled dirt onto the road to
keep the diesel from seeping into the grass and causing an environmental
hazard, said Connie Hall, a battalion chief with the San Antonio Fire
Department.
The ramp was closed for several hours while a hazmat
team contained the diesel and the spilled
battery acid.

An incident initially reported as a pipe bomb
explosion near a Santa Monica synagogue was actually a freak industrial
accident, authorities said.
"We're absolutely positive it was not a terrorist act
or a hate crime," Santa Monica Fire Capt. Judah Mitchell
said.
He said a 300-pound metal pipe encased in concrete was
in a plastic bin with construction debris. The bin was located in a
walkway between the Chabad House and a guest house behind the
synagogue's neighboring home.
Some type of chemical reaction propelled the pipe into
the air and through the roof of the guest house, about 25 feet away.
Mitchell said the cause of the reaction is under investigation, but
officials made clear that they do not believe it was an intentional
act.
The pipe remained stuck in the roof for several hours
until firefighters removed it, revealing a gaping hole.
The side
of the temple suffered some minor damage where the object apparently
ricocheted.

the building.

deal with the fire, which involves chemicals.

The New Orleans Fire
Department is looking into what caused an 18-wheeler to overturn
Wednesday morning.
The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. near
Tchoupitoulas and Calliope streets.
According
to the New Orleand Fire Department, 30 pounds of a white chemical
spilled from the truck after it overturned. A hazardous materials
unit was called in to clean to up the chemical which was identified as
glyphosate, a weed killer.
=93The
chemical is an irritant and if exposed to it for long periods could have
damaging effects,=94 said a statement from the NOFD.

The third
floor of a building on the National Naval Medical Center campus was
evacuated around 2:30p.m. Wednesday after reports of a suspicious odor,
according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.
A county
hazmat unit as well as federal NavyMed rescue personnel responded.
The third floor of the building -- Building 70 -- was
ventilated after a product was found to have spilled inside a chemical
closet in a lab area, according to Capt. Oscar Garcia, a county Fire and
Rescue spokesman. Garcia didn't know what the product was, though he
said it appeared to have been stored properly.

An incident involving chemicals at a southwest
suburban Bridgeview meat packing facility sent people feeling ill to
area hospitals and prompted emergency officials to evacuate the building
early Tuesday.
Emergency officials responded to Stampede Meat, Inc.,
on the 7300 block of South 78th Avenue, about 12:20 a.m. after unknown
chemicals mixed and caused people at the facility to feel ill,
Bridgeview Police Sgt. Lou Dominguez said.
An
unknown number of people were taken to area hospitals but no serious
injuries had been reported as of about 1:15 a.m., he
said.
The building, which houses a meat-packing type
facility, was fully staffed when the incident occurred and had to be
evacuated, Dominguez said.

Crews are
working to clean up a leak in Ashbridges Bay that officials say poses no
threat to drinking water or the environment.
Toronto
Fire=92s Hazmat unit was called to the Lakeshore and Coxwell area around
6:30 p.m. Monday after a substance, initially thought to be diesel or
home heating fuel, was found leaking from storm drains into the
lake.
Officials
from the ministry of the environment were already on scene, trying to
skim the substance off the water=92s surface, when the Hazmat team
arrived. Booms were also laid to contain the spill.
On
Tuesday the Ministry of the Environment confirmed the substance is
mineral oil used by Hydro One to lubricate hydro lines and cool them
down.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An early morning incident on I-95
caused a semi-truck to leak fuel on the southbound lanes of the
interstate.
The right southbound lane of I-95 at Old St. Augustine
Road was blocked for nearly an hour as the Florida Highway Patrol
and hazmat crews responded to the scene.
FHP
officials tell us the 18-wheeler hit some debris in the southbound
lanes, and that punctured the fuel tank, causing the
leak.

RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) - A hazmat incident in South
Richmond shut down portions of I-95 North near Bells Road for hours
Tuesday.

on-ramp from Bells Road until 4 p.m.
Virginia State Police Sgt.
Thomas Molnar tells CBS 6 that around 8:00 a.m. about 200 gallons of
muriatic acid leaked from a drum with a broken valve inside a tractor
trailer.
In addition, Virginia State
Police and the Richmond Fire Department say another drum in the truck
containing acetone had a small leak on the top of the drum and some
acetone sloshed out and mixed with the muriatic acid producing a milky
green substance.

MISSOULA - Missoula's Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat)
Response team aided in cleaning up a diesel spill in front of Big Sky
Brewing on Trumpeter Way just after 1:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Swift
Transportation Hazmat Department manager Dan Coberly said a mechanical
failure of a fuel connection caused the leak. The driver was on his way
to pick up a load at Big Sky Brewing.
"The
driver could not have known that this was going to fail," Coberly
said.
As Swift Transportation company policy dictates,
Coberly said the driver removed his cotton mattress and placed under the
spill to minimize spill spread. He then contacted Coberly at the Hazmat
Department.
