Amber,
Congratulations! One of the things you'll need to become familiar w
ith are your local and State regulations/codes, etc.
If the HAZMAT course you are taking in May is at the Center for Domestic Pr
eparedness in Anniston, AL, you should be in for a great experience.&nb
sp; You might also consider the EHTER course there (on environmental heal
th aspects of disasters). I took it in January and it was really ex
cellent. I'll be going back in April for another course on Agroterr
orism. I think they will give the last one of these in June 2011,
so if you're interested, I'd check immediately with your State DHS Coord
inator.
If you'll be in North East Texas, I'd also suggest you make contac
t with the good folks at the North Texas Poison Center (your regiona
l Poison Center in Dallas -- 800 number is inside the cover of any&n
bsp;area phone book).
I second the comment about joining NEHA (National Environmental Health Asso
ciation). I was a member for many years and they have some excellen
t programs, etc.
Best wishes and good luck.

All,
I will be inspecting any establishmen
t that sells food, such as full service restaurants, gas stations, da
y care centers, schools, fast food etc. Also I will inspect food distri
bution warehouses, public/semi-public pools, storm water and industrial
waste haulers. I work for the Health Department so I am basically inspecti
ng these places to ensure the safety and health of its customers. I also re
spond to citizen complaints, such as oil in driveways, food borne illne
sses and vector control. I am basically a health inspector. Our city is uni
que in that we also respond to all east north Texas HAZMAT incidents. I am
attending HAZMAT training in Alabama in May. We have 'million dollar truck'
for HAZMAT scenes that is equipped with chemical identification instrument
s, glove box and decontamination station. I am only one of two people wit
h a chemistry degree, everyone else is either biology or environmental sc
ience. So I really want to bring a chemical perspective to the department.&nb
sp;
Thanks,
Amber Potts

Amber,
We could narrow your
reading list if you would describe your responsibilities.
