I've agreed to help organize a symposium for the Denver ACS meeting on the topic of Chemical Safety in the Field. The idea is to consider chemical safety concerns that arise outside the laboratory setting. These cover a wide variety of potential concerns, including use of chemicals, transportation of chemicals, management of chemical waste, and emergency response involving chemicals, as well as traditional field safety issues. At the point, we're looking for ideas, abstracts and speakers on the topic. If you have any interest in participating in this symposium, please let me know. The submission window is already open for Denver meeting (August 28-September 1, 2011) and will be closing in mid-March, so if you have an idea for abstract, act today! FYI, I've appended below a list of the topic areas currently in the system for Denver submissions. Let me know if you have any questions about this. - Ralph CHAS: Division of Chemical Health and Safety Division of Chemical Health and Safety Awards (Oral): Join the Division as we recognize outstanding organizations and individuals in the chemical health and safety enterprise. The Division is pleased to acknowledge the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health for their generous sponsorship of the College and University Health and Safety award. Field operations - how not to hurt yourself with chemicals in the field (Oral): This symposium will include presentations on ways to implement and administer safe field operations that include chemical use. Health effects of nanotechnology (Oral): This symposium will present the latest information and guidance on the health effects of engineered nanomaterials. Monitoring methods will be discussed and guidance on exposure limits will be presented. Improving safety culture - you, too, can effect change (Oral): This symposium will include presentations on how safety culture can be positively affected by an organizational commitment to change. This symposium will also include a panel discussion with colleagues experienced in effecting change in the safety culture at large institutions.
