PHOENIX - A HAZMAT crew was called to a north Phoenix hotel Thursday to investigate a portable meth lab inside a vehicle.

Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sg t. Steve Martos said property crimes detectives served a search warrant on a room at Premier Inns near Interstate 17 and Peoria Avenue, as well as a vehicle in the parking lot, just before 5 p.m.

Chemicals and other items found inside the car led police to believe the car was being used as a portable meth la b.

WESTWOOD - A hazardous materials team was sent Thursday to UCLA, where a spill of a cleaning agent inside a build ing left three people feeling ill.

The Los Angeles Fire Department respon ded at 2:31 p.m. to a report of an "unknown chemical spill" in th e Biomedical Sciences Research Building, city fire spokesman Devin Gales said.

Three facilities workers who reported feeling nauseous were treated at the scene, according to UCLA officials, an d about 200 people were safely evacuated from the building.

South Charles E. Young Drive was close d between Tiverton Drive and Westholme Avenue.

The spilled cleaning agent, identified as chlorine dioxide, was contained by 3:30 p.m., officials said.

THE suspected suicide of a St Albans m an sparked a major chemical alert this evening, when potentially lethal sub stances were found in his home.

Police were called at about 2pm after reports were received about the welfare of a man in his 20s.

At about 4pm officers forced their way into his Hatfield Road home and found him dead.

It was then that the suspicious substa nces were discovered and the fire and ambulance services were called.

Dozens of police officers, firefighter s and ambulance personnel surrounded the scene this evening as specialist c rews wearing protective bio-hazard suits searched the building.

Onlookers watched on in bewilderment a s a large inflatable decontamination archway was erected in the middle of t he road.

SPARKS - Streets are back open in the Coney Island area after Wednesday's hazmat incident.

Officials say a barrel of nitric acid began to smoke for unknown reasons when it was moved into a plastic barrel.

Advanced Composite Technologies uses t he chemical in production, and hired H20 Environmental to dispose of the ch emical waste.

Fully-suited hazmat teams had to sipho n the chemical out of the barrel and dilute it with water.

Nitric acid can be a dangerous chemica l.

"It's an industrial grade nitric acid. If it got onto your skin, it would cause severe burns. It can cause a lot of reactions with a lot of different chemicals," said Tom Garrison, Sparks Fire Department.

Teams were able to mitigate the situat ion without incident.

The chemical is still in several barre ls at Advanced Composite Technologies. H20 Environmental wil return to the scene Thursday morning to finish the removal.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A hazmat team is on the scene of a 300 gallon fuel spill at a terminal on Halifax Lane i n Chesapeake.

According to Captain Mike Thibeault, a foam team has the spill contained and covered.

Crews are conducting atmospheric monit oring in the area right now, Thibeault said.

No injuries or evacuation have been re ported.

COVENTRY TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Federal age nts seized a small amount of a suspected hazardous material from a South Ma in Street home late Tuesday afternoon.

FBI spokesman Scott Wilson said the su bstance, which could be lethal, was flown to a federal laboratory in Maryla nd for analysis. He declined to comment on published reports that the substance is believed to be ricin, a deadly powder that can be pr oduced from castor beans.

Wilson said the material was taken fro m a home on South Main Street near Firestone Metro Park that recently had b een foreclosed. The new owner called police with concerns that a hazardous material was in the house. Agents called in specially tra ined FBI hazardous materials teams from Pittsburgh and Quantico, Va., Wilso n said.

South Main Street was closed near Vaug hn Road as the Summit County Sheriff's Office and local firefighters waited for the team's arrival. Homes and businesses in the neighborhood were not evacuated.

The agents, wearing hazmat suits, arri ved at 3 p.m. and searched the home.
