ICCVAM Announces an Independent Scientific Peer Review Panel Meeting on an In Vitro Test Method for Endocrine Disruptor Chemical Screening

The National Toxicology Program Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods (NICEATM), in collaboration with the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Validation of Alternative Methods (ICCVAM), announces a public meeting of an independent scientific peer review panel to evaluate the validation status of LUMI-CELL=AE ER (BG1Luc ER TA), an in vitro transcriptional activation (TA) assay used to identify chemicals that can interact with human estrogen receptors (ERs). This test method may be applicable for addressing the ER TA component of the Environmental Protection Agency Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program Tier 1 screening battery.

The Panel meeting will be open to the public at no charge. In addition, public comments are invited on the documents that will be reviewed by the Panel: a draft background review document and ICCVAM draft test method recommendations.

Availability of Draft Documents

The draft BRD and draft ICCVAM test method recommendations will be posted no later than February 1 on the NICEATM-ICCVAM Web site at
htt p://iccvam.niehs.nih.gov/methods/endocrine/PeerPanel11.htm

The draft documents may also be obtained by contacting NICEATM by phone at 919-541-2384 or by email atniceatm**At_Symbol_Here**niehs.nih.gov. Comments on the documents should be submitted to NICEATM by March 10, 2011. NICEATM will post all comments on the NICEATM-ICCVAM Web site identified by the individual's name and affiliation or sponsoring organization (if applicable)

Peer Review Panel Meeting

The Panel meeting will be held on March 29-30, 2011 at the William H. Natcher Conference Center at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. The meeting is scheduled to run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. In order to facilitate planning for this meeting, persons wishing to attend are asked to register in advance by March 15, 2011. An online registration form will be available by February 1 on the NICEATM-ICCVAM Web site at:

About NICEATM and ICCVAM

ICCVAM is an interagency committee composed of 15 U.S. Federal regulatory and research member agencies that require, use, or generate toxicological and safety testing information for chemicals, products, and other substances. ICCVAM evaluates the validity of new, revised, and alternative methods with regulatory applicability, and promotes the scientific validation and regulatory acceptance of safety testing methods that more accurately assess the safety of chemicals and products and that reduce, refine (less pain and distress), or replace animal use.
ICCVAM has contributed to the approval or endorsement of 40 alternative safety-testing methods by Federal regulatory agencies and international organizations since its establishment in 1997. Appropriate use of these test methods can significantly reduce animal use and improve animal welfare. ICCVAM has also identified critical research, development, and validation efforts needed to further advance numerous other alternative methods.
NICEATM and ICCVAM welcome nominations and submissions of new or modified alternative safety testing methods with the potential to reduce, refine, or replace the use of animals in testing while maintaining and promoting scientific quality and the protection of human health, animal health, and the environment. Nominations and submissions are welcome from any individual or organization. Please contact NICEATM at niceatm**At_Symbol_Here**niehs.nih.gov for more information or to discuss a possible nomination or submission.
Additional information about NICEATM and ICCVAM validation and test method activities can be found on the NICEATM-ICCVAM website at http://iccvam.niehs.nih.gov/. Thank you for your interest and your support of NICEATM and ICCVAM.
