HINCKLEY, Ohio - Hazmat crews responded to the ALDI Supermarket distribution center in Medina County Tuesday morning after a strange smell was reported.

Police were called to the center in Hinckley. The company said no employees were present at this time, nor was anyone sick or choking -- but people at the plant told NewsChannel5 that the smell was so strong that it made some of them feel sick, even choking them.

Police and fire crews responded to the scene, and hazmat officials said that the smell was the result of a refrigeration unit that broke. Once the unit broke, it began releasing ammonia into the air.

The ALDI distribution center houses the frozen food for the supermarket chain, and the one of the large refrigeration units is what broke.

Crews on the scene said that the area is now safe, and technicians are working to repair the refrigerator. Hazmat crews remained at the scene for some time to ventilate the building and remove fumes from the ammonia.
