You may want lockers instead of shelves to restrict access to opened drinks; safety/liability issues. The news is regularly full of examples to prove that there are people out in the world who will drop something illicit into someone's drink. Even without that worry, an open shelf will have the problem of keeping the ownership of the identical Diet Coke cans straight.
