That may or may not be true in the case that initiated this discussion, but I have been told on several different occasions by differen t individuals (county inspectors, mainly) that shower discharge could not be released and had to be contained.
So this IS a common misconception among local officia ls, and I for one very much appreciate being made aware of the EPA letter!!!!!
This listserve is a valuable resource! Thanks to all w ho contribute!

My understanding is tha t the curb is meant to keep any spill that may occur in the laboratory from reach ing the drain; it is not meant to contain the drench water. There has bee n no mention of containing or collecting the drench water (thank goodness).

How will the 1” high curb prevent 300-600 gallons of water (with the hazm at) from entering the floor drain? Looks like normal governmentese.

Oh, like that's going to work! The volume of water comming off that showe r will turn that shower area into a I inch-deep pond surrounded on 4 sides wi th mini falls. I'd love to find out who thought up that one. Monon a

I am currently involved in construction of two new laboratories and was instructed by the city commercial building review department to include a 1" high curb around the shower area to keep hazmat from entering the f loor drain in the event of a spill. Also, the curb has to be sloped on bot h sides to allow accessibility.
