Celia,
Do you have the most recent version? It is ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2009 Am
erican National Standard for Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment.
If you do not have this version, it is available from: <

I was a member of the Revision Committee for this Standard, but have no f
inancial interest in sales of copies of the Standard.
One thing we did not address in the Standard is the issue of drains and wha
t becomes of run-off water, which is potentially contaminated depending o
n the circumstances. The Revision Committee felt this was outside t
he scope of the Standard, which is a Performance Standard for the
equipment. Drains fall under a variety of plumbing Standards or Bui
lding Codes which I do not even pretend to know anything about.
; This is an issue, however, because of requirements for reqular test
ing, the potential for "prankster" activation of such equipment,
or the real possiblility of emergency use. Because of the large vo
lumes involved, significant water damage may occur, particularly if the
shower is located on an upper floor with other lab or office facilities be
low it.
Others may have recent actual installation experience.
