LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A Louisville man has
been arrested after a meth lab was found inside his repossessed
car. The arrest report says Stephen Forman, 35, called the car lot
that owns his vehicle after it was repossessed and told them there was a
meth lab in the back seat.
Hazmat crews were called out to remove the meth
lab. The police report says Forman admitted to putting the lab in
the car.

BEDFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY)
- Deputies removed nearly 100 dogs and cats from a Bedford County mobile
home in one of the worst cases of animal hoarding state officials have
ever seen.
Animal control officers had to wait for a hazmat team
to secure the house. They said there was so much pet urine that it was
dangerous for rescuers to breathe.
"How anybody could have
stood it on a 90 degree, 100 degree day - I don't know," said Bedford
County Sheriff Mike Brown.
The amonia from the urine was measured at about 200
parts per million. That's compared with about 5 parts per million in
your average patch of grass. It was a staggering amount that vets worry
could hurt the animals' lungs.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A HazMat team was busy Wednesday
morning after a fire broke out in the garage of a home on Houston's
south side.
It happened around 9pm at a home undergoing
renovations on Akard and Rubin. Several hours after the fire tore
through the garage, firefighters, HazMat crews and federal investigators
were still at the scene because they found several volatile chemicals
inside.
They describe what was found
in that garage as dangerous and hazardous chemicals usually used for
drug labs.
"Because of the chemicals we are dealing with, we
thought we needed to be very careful," said Robert Koryciak with the
Houston Fire Department Arson Bureau. "Not only are they very dangerous
to health, they are very volatile and explosive."
One
firefighter was transported the hospital with unknown injuries. There is
no word on his condition.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A leaking tank of carbon
dioxide that closed traffic on Barstow between Chestnut and Willow has
been capped. Traffic on Barstow is now flowing through the
area.
The leak prompted a hazmat response from the Fresno
Fire Department. Authorities say the leaking container was a 14-ton
liquid carbon dioxide cylinder.
The leak was plugged Tuesday
morning. No one was injured, but police closed surrounding streets as a
precaution.

Patients
and staff at North Country Community HealthCare evacuated the building
Monday afternoon after a chemical spill.
According to information from the Flagstaff Fire
Department, six units from the fire department, a total of 17
firefighters, responded to the clinic on North Fourth Street at about 3
p.m. on a report of a chemical spill of phenol.
Phenol, when it turns to a vapor, is toxic and can
cause extreme cases of injury and death, according to the fire
department.
Andrew Saal, chief medical
officer at the clinic, said the building was evacuated once the spill
was reported. Hazardous Materials crews in protective gear went into the
building, isolated the spill and ventilated the
building.

Shelby Township -- A
chemical cloud that was released this morning at a metal coating company
in the 23 Mile and Hayes area does not pose any threat to nearby
residents, fire department officials said.
"It was a small chemical release contained within the
building, and the facility's air filtration system handled it and
enabled it to dissipate safely into the air," said Lt. Lance Watters
with the Shelby Township Fire Department. "It's not a threat to anyone
who lives nearby."
Fire
fighters were called to respond to the chemical cloud at EM Coating
Services at 8:30 a.m., Watters said.
Workers
were temporarily evacuated, officials said. None of the company's
employees or fire fighters were injured or sickened because of the
incident, Watters said.

DONNA - State environmental inspectors want the
property owner of an old manufacturing planet to come up with a plan to
clean up a recent chemical spill.
Two weeks ago a fire broke
out at the site on 11th Street, south of Business 83 in Donna. A
chemical called nahptha was stored in barrels at the plant. The chemical
is used in dry cleaning.
A demolition crew started tearing down one of the
silos on site. There was about 10 inches of sludge and chemical left
inside the silo and it sparked the fire.
The city of Donna issued a permit when tearing down
the plant. Officials say the workers did not follow protocol including
cutting down tall grass. The site is located just feet from a
school.
TCEQ spokesperson Jaime Garza says the owner received
a certified letter from inspectors. The owner must submit a plan to
cleanup the site to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. If
the owner does not comply he could face fines or other
penalties.

A chemical odor forced the evacuation of a Pearl City
school this afternoon and sent some students to the
hospital.
Fire officials say the
pesticide known as malathion was being used at a home next to Highlands
Intermediate School.
The smell triggered the evacuation of the
school.
"The first alarm came when my teacher in the building
in the uppermost corner of the school said that she needed to evacuate
the upper room because the odor was so pungent that her students were
starting to get light headed,=" said principal Amy
Martinson.
Emergency officials say about a dozen people were
affected by the odor.
Many of them were treated at the school and released,
but two students were taken to the hospital for treatment after
complaining of nausea and irritation to their throats and
eyes.
Students and faculty were allowed to return to class
at around 2 p.m. and the principal sent letters home to
parents.

An explosion inside Cartersville`s Tintoria Piania
industrial plant sent two men to the hospital on Monday around 3 pm.
Reports said that the accident occured during a test in which a lid blew
off an empty vat. Both men that were injured were sent to the hospital
via ambulance.
Medical officals tried to
Life flight one of the men but could not due to the
weather.

Schools participating in the
SC3 program are provided assistance in developing inventories of
chemicals in storage areas, training in laboratory safety and disposing
of outdated items. Ask school officials in your area if they
participate in the SC3 program. It may just prevent an explosion
when your child is at school. Additional information on the SC3
program can be obtained at www.epa.gov/sc3.

ORANGE, Mass. (WWLP) - Orange firefighters say a
factory fire was neither purposefully set, nor leaked chemicals into a
nearby river.
Orange Fire Chief Dennis Annear told 22News,
firefighters were called late Saturday afternoon to the Holbek Group
factory, which makes fake rocks for movie sets.
Chief
Annear said firefighters discovered a stockpile of chemicals used for
making set props.
"There is a chemical smell when you get in the
building, we contacted the DEP and the Hazmat team that night to make
sure we weren't releasing any hazardous materials into the river,
because one wall of the building is against the river," said Chief
Annear.
Testing showed that no chemicals leaked out into the
river.
Seventeen communities were called in for mutual
aid.
One firefighter received minor
injuries.

At 11:10
this morning, Lafayette Fire Department responded to Lafayette High
School for a reported fire in the hallway. Upon arrival, the fire was
out, but smoke was still in the hallway near science rooms. Members of
the school staff and school resource officer extinguished the fire.
Firefighters cleared out the smoke and rendered the area safe. Fire
caused minor damages in the hallway.
The
school was evacuated when the fire alarms were activated.
Fire investigators determined that the fire originated
in a trash container located in the hallway. The custodian emptied the
trash from the science labs/classrooms into a larger trash container.
The science department utilized zinc and sodium hydroxide and other
items. The remains were discarded. The fire was caused by a chemical
reaction with the materials in the trash container.

Tema, Sept 27, GNA - Nii Armah Ashitey, Greater Accra
Regional Minister, on Monday advised companies using inflammable
products to constantly observe safety practices to prevent fire
outbreaks. He also asked management of such companies to provide their
workers with fire protective clothing and equipment.
Nii
Ashitey made the call when he visited the Midland International Ghana
Limited Company, which experienced a fire outbreak on Saturday. Four
persons carrying out repair works on a tank at the company lost their
lives in the explosion, while properties running into several thousands
of Ghana Cedis were also lost in the blaze.
...
The
Minister asked the Ghana National Fire Service (GNF) to intensify its
anti-fire education and drills at companies to prevent out break of
fires.
Mr Kwabena Obese-Jecty, Managing-Director of Midland,
who conducted the Minister and his entourage round the burnt premises,
said the company has always taken fire safety issues seriously since it
started operations in 2001. He commended the GNFS for effectively
containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby
establishments. Mr Obese-Jecty also praised the Police for keeping the
people out of the premises during the incident. Madam Jemima Anku,
Marketing Manager of the Company, said that the four people, who died in
the incident, were employees of M&B Engineering, who were
carrying out repair works on an empty storage tank at the premises. She
said the company deals in ethanol, a chemical product, used in the
production of alcohol, pharmaceutical products, cosmetics and perfume.
Madam Anku said that routine maintenance works were mostly carried out
at the company during week ends and holidays. She said the entire office
block of the company, loading shed, a tanker, forklift, a pick-up
vehicle, storage tanks among other properties were lost during the fire
outbreak. 27 Sept 10

Crowley
Police have made three arrests into a matter which has been under
investigation for the past several weeks. Police say there are possibly
more arrest to come. The incident stems from a September 5th incident
which occurred on Fairway Dr. in Crowley.
Police
received a complaint that an object believed to be a homemade bomb had
been located on the property. Crowley Police along with Crowley Fire
Department and State Police Hazmat responded to the
scene.
"Our investigation into this matter has revealed that
the persons involved in this matter were juveniles. There was no intent
to cause damage or injury, however state law was violated under
Manufacturing of an Incendiary Device" stated Chief K.P.
Gibson.
The three juveniles were charged and are pending court
action. Other juveniles are being looked at for their possible role in
this incident. "Our concern comes as these young people do not
understand the seriousness of what could have happened. They thought
that they were playing a joke, but in reality put fear into citizens"
stated Chief Gibson. "My concern is that someone, including the young
people who made these devices could have been injured. Mixing chemicals
to make an explosive device is not a game and will not be tolerated"
stated Chief Gibson.
Due to the suspects being juveniles, their names
cannot be released.

OAKLAND, Calif. =E2=80=94 A California judge has
ordered Target Corp. to stop improperly disposing of damaged or
defective items that qualify as hazardous waste.
Alameda County Superior Court Judge Steven Brick
signed the order Friday based on allegations brought by the state and
several cities and counties.
Their
lawsuit contends that Target stores statewide have routinely thrown
hazardous items such as bleach, pesticides, paint, aerosols and
electronics directly into the trash.
Among the
claims, the Los Angeles city attorney's office says Los Angeles stores
sent more than 5,000 pounds of unsalable hazardous products to a
regional food bank.
Minneapolis-based Target says in a statement that the company
has a comprehensive program in place to ensure stores comply with
California law.

A
collision between a car and a diesel truck did not cause serious injury,
but the fuel spill that resulted slowed traffic on Alabama Highway
14.
The wreck was near Edgewood
Academy around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sheriff Bill Franklin
said.
Volunteer firefighters from
Elmore and Coosada responded to the accident.
The truck=E2=80=99s saddle tanks were ruptured,
spilling about 75 gallons of diesel fuel on the road. Environmental
protection rules consider that size of a diesel spill to be a hazardous
materials situation, so the county=E2=80=99s HAZMAT=E2=80=88team was
summoned.

NORTH
HAVEN =E2=80=94 The owner of a Sackett Point Road business received
severe burns on both hands and arms when there was an explosion in his
laboratory Monday morning, Fire Chief Vincent Landisio
said.
Ji Dong Liu, 35, of New Haven, was treated at the
scene by firefighters. He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and then
the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit. Liu was listed in fair condition with
non-life threatening injuries later Monday, a Bridgeport Hospital
spokesman said.
AldLab Chemicals, 410 Sackett Point Road, and a
business next door, Spectrics Analytical Chemicals, were evacuated after
the chemical spill shortly before 9 a.m. Liu was alone in the laboratory
when the accident occurred, authorities said.
The Fire
Department along with the Occupational Safety Health Administration and
the state Department of Environmental Protection Haz-Mat Unit are
continuing to investigate.
Landisio said he is looking into whether the explosion
and spill was caused due to an "accidental overheat=" of
acetic acid. The acid has a flash point of 200 degrees and is "ver
y volatile and flammable,=" he said.
Once it
was determined that a hazardous materials incident occurred, and that it
was contained in one room, DEP employees wore hazmat suits into the
laboratory.
