I strongly agree with David about Flinn--when it comes to any issue
concerning science safety, I look no further than Flinn.
I certainly identify with the issue of tight educational budgets, so
proper storage for hazmats is a must--this is not a place to cut
corners! Believe it or not, some science suppliers sell acid cabinets
with metal hinges (not Flinn!!) Within two years, the door falls off
from corrosion--$700 down the drain. However you proceed, read your
specification documents carefully.
First, assess the needs for five years. Many institutions like yours
(Dr. Johnson's school) make the mistake of buying large quantities of
chemicals when there is money, then have to contend with storing surplus
hazmats. Identify what activities you'll be doing over the next five
years, decide how much of what chemicals you'll need, then identify the
proper size and type of storage cabinets. Flinn offers acid cabinets
and flammable cabinets that sit on a table top--much smaller, much less
expensive. If you find that suits your needs, let that size limit your
inventory. If you can't fit more, you don't buy more.
As for financing the cabinets, there are many educational grants (ACS
has some options, the Toyota Tapestry grant through NSTA might be a
possibility). Finally, fund raising events and the PTA should be
considered. Parents of motivated students will often be all too ready
to help provide proper safety equipment to a science program.
Recruiting help from the parents also sets the tone early on that the
science program values safety above all. Safe science practice will
become a habit of mind for your graduates.

Flinn makes quality cabinets. We have several at our college (Pima
Community College) and have been very pleased with them.
