Being in NJ, I remember (those days in the 80=92s) and would like to remind everyone that you need to be careful about the perceptions that may go along with something like syringes in the normal solid waste stream. The syringes definitely are RCRA empty and can be disposed of as solid waste, but remember that untrained people usually only know what they hear about in the news=85which is the sensationalized story. In my opinion, the best management practice is what Rachel describes, because it=92s under your control.

We too, use syringes for non-medical purposes (auto-injector GCs, spiking QC solvents, etc) and ours are not regulated as medical waste but as hazardous waste IAW our state Hazardous Waste Plan and RCRA requirements. Since we are not a medical facility or normally deal with "medical related" activities in our Lab, it's kinda hard to explain the generation of "red-bag" waste.

I disagree that "all" sharps, regardless of use should be regulated as medical waste. We may be reading too much into this or perhaps local regulators don't understand what the sharps are being used for. However, I do agree that sharps should not be placed in regular trash.
