Is there a PDF with the "additional comments" provided by the survey respon
ders? The summarized numeric results are interesting, however a very brief
review of the comments is far more telling, and would provide CHAS directi
on for the future of academic health and safety.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] CHAS Chemistry Dept Safety Culture Survey Results

CHAS members may be aware that members of the Division, with the help of th
e ACS Committee on Chemical Safety and Committee on Professional Training,
conducted a survey of chemistry departments nationwide in April. The purpos
e of the survey was to generate a picture of current chemical safety manage
ment practices in higher education in the United States. The response rate
from approximately 900 chemistry departments contacted was about 44%. The s
urvey was designed by ACS members based on their professional judgement of
the key factors that impact safety cultures in academic departments. We did
not include a survey professional in this initial effort. While this means
that the survey may not be strictly scientific, we believe that the result
s are quite interesting, both for what the responses were, but also for que
stions that are left unanswered.

We are beginning the process of analyzing the results, which are available
at
http://www.dchas.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid

We are also considering follow up steps to the survey, including possibilit
ies such as surveying other stakeholders in academic safety culture (e.g. s
tudents, or EHS professionals who serve these departments) to see how their
responses compare to those we've already received. We are very interested
in feedback from CHAS members about patterns they see in the results.

We'd appreciate it if you could take the time to review the information at
the site above and provide your thoughts on what they mean. There's a short
 survey available at
http://www.dchas.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid

where you can share your thoughts on this with us.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
