John, I cannot speak to NFPA requirements on flammable liquid use in chemic al fume hoods, but... I can say that NFPA Codes/Standards do indicate sprinklers in gas cabinets + exhaust ducting for pyrophoric gas use and/or semiconductor research / ma nufacturing. See NFPA 45 and NFPA 318, respectively. I also see mention o f sprinklers in paint booths and associated exhaust systems. Perhaps the i nsurer views the hoods you mention as analogous to paint booth operations? Alternatively, if these hoods are more storage than operations, then the a nalogy is drawn to inside liquid storage room per NFPA 30. Whatever the case, I'd ask the insurer to cite you chapter and verse for re commendations for upgrades. You might get better service this way and it's definitely easier to work with only one vendor.
