What was green slime leaking onto Fairmont Avenue in Jersey
City?
The state is investigating
illegal chemical dumping in Jersey City after the fire department's
hazmat unit was called to deal with a puddle of a green, acrid-smelling
liquid on Fairmount Avenue yesterday morning.
Jersey City Municipal Utility Authority workers
discovered 18 drums in the middle of a lot at 352 Johnston Ave. around
10:30 a.m.
At least one of the drums
was leaking a green liquid, which hasn't been identified, down the back
of the lot onto Fairmount Avenue, said state Attorney General spokesman
Peter Aseltine.
After an initial response by
the city's hazmat unit, the incident was taken over by the environmental
crime section of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, Aseltine
said.
A mound of sand was placed
in front of a sewer on Fairmount to prevent the foul-smelling liquid
from going down the drain. Someone dropped the drums at the lot over the
weekend and the state has hired a contractor to remove them, Aseltine
said.
