NEW HAVEN, Indiana
(Indiana=92s NewsCenter) - Allen County emergency personnel are
cleaning up after 2,000 pounds of chlorine leaked at a New Haven
factory. The spill occurred around 2pm Saturday at the Superior Aluminum
plant.
Hazzardous Materials teams report the
spill was contained in the plant, but there were concerns the liquid
could evaporate into the atmosphere and form a dangerous chemical cloud.
Officials cordoned off the area around the plant and several homes were
evacuated as a precaution. those people have since returned to their
homes and officials say the spill caused no environmental
concerns.

COLUMBUS, Ohio=97Hazmat crews were called to the scene
of an apparent liquid fertilizer spill on the city=92s West Side
Thursday.
Columbus fire=92s hazmat crews were called to a
commercial warehouse on Interchange Road shortly before 11:30
a.m.
=46rom Chopper 4, the
business appeared to be Time Warner, but officials haven=92t confirmed
that information.
Initial
reports indicated at least 15 gallons of liquid fertilizer concentrate
was spilled into a sewer or storm drain.
The warehouse was not evacuated.
The Environmental Protection Agency was notified of
the incident. It remained unclear if the EPA was called to the
scene.

Environmental crews called to clean up after thermostat
breaks
CLARKSVILLE, IN (WAVE) - A Clarksville woman contacted
WAVE 3 for help after her daughter accidentally broke a thermostat
containing mercury in their apartment. Environmental clean-up crews
spent the day, trying to lower the levels of mercury, but the landlord
has already started eviction proceedings against the
tenant.
Crystal Green says her daughter knocked caused a
thermostat to break when she moved a couch. The mercury spilled out onto
the floor. Green says she tried to vacuum up the mess, but Clark County
health officials say that was the worst thing she could have done in the
situation. They say the vacuum caused the mercury to vaporize and spread
throughout the apartment.
Doug Dentfield with the Clark County Health Department
says many of the items inside Green's apartment were a total loss
because they were contaminated.

A Federal Express building downtown was evacuated
today after two employees had a physical reaction they believed was
caused by a package dropped off at the store, according to a Baton Rouge
police news release.
The incident occurred at the Federal Express building
at 525 Florida Blvd. shortly before noon, the release
says.
After an investigation by Baton Rouge Fire Department
Hazmat teams, EMS and Police Department explosive technicians, no
hazardous materials, residue or any other suspicious substances were
found, the release says.
All air monitoring of the area was negative for any
contaminants that could explain the employees=92 reactions, the release
says.
The building was reopened for business by 1:15 p.m.,
the release says.

materials team that was sent out to the western edge of Golden Gate Park
this morning on a report of a suspicious leak didn't find any dangerous
chemicals, a department spokeswoman said.
Just
after 10 a.m., the department responded to a report of an unknown liquid
leaking out of a 55-gallon drum near the Golden Gate Stables, located at
36th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard, spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge
said.
The liquid turned out to be water.
10:29 AM:
A fire department hazardous materials team has been sent to the western
edge of Golden Gate Park this morning, a department spokeswoman
said.
The department received a report just after 10 a.m.
that contractors had discovered an unknown liquid leaking from a
55-gallon drum near the Golden Gate Stables at 36th Street and John F.
Kennedy Boulevard, spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.
She did
not yet have additional details on the situation.
