Pathological lab catches fire in city
A fire broke out from a chemical reaction at a
pathological diagnostic centre in the city's Green Road
yesterday.
The fire damaged equipment and chemicals of the
laboratory on the second floor of a ten-storey
building.
Lab assistant Mohammad Suman received severe burns as
the accident occurred while he was processing chemicals at the lab at
11:30am.
Dilip Kumar Ghosh, deputy assistant director of Fire
Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) also sustained injuries when the
firemen were trying to put out the fire.
They were
rushed to hospital, said FSCD officials.
Dr
Mohammad Kamal, owner of the diagnostic centre, told The Daily Star,
"The fire originated during mixing of chemicals".
FSCD
officials said 10 units of firefighters after an hour-long effort could
bring the fire under control.
Rab personnel barricaded the roads in the area to help
the firefighters douse the flames. It however led to traffic snarl-ups
on the roads.
China: Two killed in chemical plant blast in north
China
Beijing, Apr 5 (PTI) Two people were killed and a
person was injured when an explosion occurred in a chemical plant in
north China's Chifeng City following which as many as 700 residents in
the proximity of the site had to be evacuated.
The
accident occurred when a high-pressure storage tank containing silicon
tetrachloride exploded in Chifeng City in north China's Inner Mongolia
Autonomous Region during the weekend, Xinhua news agency
reported.
The blast in the Shengsen Silicon Technology
Development Co, Ltd also injured another person.
Following
the blast nearly 700 residents living nearby were evacuated to safer
areas.
The injured has been confirmed to be in a stable
condition in hospital, according to local authorities.
People
returned to their homes after local environmental authorities announced
that the atmospheric conditions in the town were
normal.
