MagnaGro International
Two
people are dead and another is in critical condition after an industrial
accident at MagnaGro International, 600 E. 22nd, according to Mark
Bradford, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical chief.
Emergency
crews responded at 2:38 p.m. Thursday to the site of the incident, near
22nd and Delaware streets. Once at the scene, crews were told at least
one person had fallen into a tank containing an unknown substance.
Bradford said the substance wouldn't normally be toxic, but because of
the close quarters inside the tank, it was harmful.
Jeff
Novorr, vice president at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, said chemical
residue left by an ambulance that had been at MagnaGro contained about
80 percent cane molasses. Novorr said cane molasses =97 when in a poorly
ventilated area =97 converts to carbon monoxide.
"Obviously, in a non-ventilated area, it is fatal," Novorr
said.

Deputy Gullett. =93We then called for Sheriff=92s Investigator Charlie
Wilder to assist us at the scene.
=93We
have heard about the =91shake and bake=92 method of manufacturing
methamphetamine but this was the largest mobile lab that we have found
in this county,=94 said Wilder. =93During our search of the vehicle we
found some finished product, assorted drug paraphernalia, digital scales
and all the items necessary to make meth including Coleman fuel and
