We don’t allow them to be used because everyone does not know what the abbreviations mean (no type of guid ance document). Another problem we’ve seen is that a number of disciplines (EHS and engineers for example) use the same acronyms but they mean differe nt things. Also, what happens if an emergency responder had to come to the sce ne (pick any)? Would they know what the abbreviations/acronyms mean? That woul d not be the time to find out.

What is your opinion of allowing laboratories to use abbreviations and short hand a s long as a key to those abbreviations is kept in a conspicuous location and is clearly identified?
