Larry and I attended a very interesting council meetin g last week – representative democracy at work. Here are the key point s from the Council Meeting
1)
The candidates for President of the Society (other
than
any petition candidates) are Luis A. Echegoyen and Bassam Z. Shakhashiri.
2)
The Candidates for Directors-at-Large – Janan
M.
Hayes, Robert L. Lichter, Kathleen M. Schulz and Kent J. Voorhees.
3) The Nominees for District II = George M. Bodner a nd Joesph R. Peterson.
4) The Nominees for District IV – Larry K. Krann ich and Will E. Lynch.
There was a great discussion and debate related to the amendments to the Constitution and ByLaws related to petition candidates an d Election timelines.
1) The petition to amend the Constitution – fail ed – this was to include the statement about petition candidates.
2) The petition to amend the By Laws – failed 8211; this was to shorten the timelines for elections.
The amendments to approve the dissolution of the Admis sions Committee – passed. The functions of this committee have been t ransferred to the Council Committee on Membership Affairs.

We received a report on the Society’s Finances & #8211; thanks to the good work of Staff the ACS is doing pretty well considering t he current economy. The unrestricted Net Assets have rebounded and the S ociety met 4 of 5 financial goals. The Council Voted to approve the member dues for 2011 at $146 this is an increase of $1.
The Council Approved the Allotment Calculator for Loca l Sections.
The ACS has 161,783 members at the end of 2009. This includes approximately 11,000 student members of which 6658 were former stu dent affiliates.
San Francisco was very well attended, although a recor
d was
not set. Look for some electronic presentations of a number of the pa
pers
at this meeting – watch the ACS website for more information.
