the chloroform/phenol extraction is performed in a seperatory funnel.
the sodium sulfite (or possibly sulfate...same purpose) serves as a
medium to absorb small amounts of undesired water in the final
chloroform phase.  now who would have thought working in an
environmental lab would have ever been useful.

if its the same generic phenols that I work as a control, general
precautions should be sufficient.  gloves, goggles, fume hood, lab
coat optional for exemplary employees.  ill see if i can dig up the
bottle and tell you more later.
