Margaret:
A few too many years ago I was working on lab renovating at th
e Jet Propulsion Lab. Some lessons learned include:
- The traps
in the sinks may have accumulated heavy metals and chlorinated solvents tha
t are denser than water.
- I'd suggest run the CAM 17 metals (RCRA 8,
plus heavy metals regulated by the State of California such as tin, nicke
l, cobalt) on your wipe samples.
- Contact your hazardous was
te vendor and get the VERY BEST price you can for incineration. In
2009 PSC was charging about $2/pound for incineration.
- Load "
stuff" in UN-rated 5-wall cubic yard boxes. The boxes weight less t
han 20 pounds and hold the equivalent of 4 or 5 55-gallon drums. Th
e boxes cost about $50 from Clean Earth Systems in Florida and come with a
10-mil poly liner.
- Ultraviolet works for biological decontamination an
d avoids potentially "exciting" reactions with chlorine bleach.

have a fair idea of the history of most of the labs so if there is a 'flow
chart' approach that would be very helpful.
